Horror smash closes tea rooms

A traditional tea room near Wolverhampton run by a Frank Spencer impersonator will remain closed until at least 2011 after its owners were involved in a horror car smash.

John and Michelle McSherry have been left wheelchair-bound following the July crash, which killed another driver.

The pair today revealed they had been ordered by doctors not to re-open Poplar Cottage tea rooms in Claverley, which have been closed since the accident, for at least another year.

Mr McSherry, who is well known for his impressions of the hapless character from television’s Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, said: “The tea rooms are still closed and we have been advised by our doctor to stay shut for at least another 12 months.

“My wife and I both have serious injuries to our feet and ankles and we are both in wheelchairs.”

Mr McSherry, aged 57, and his wife had been out to pick up some food on the night of July 25 when the horror smash happened. Their Silver Mitsubishi FTO Mivek was hit by father-of-two Tony Gordon’s Vauxhall Astra on the A454 Bridgnorth Road at Hilton.

Mr Gordon, aged 37, of Bridgnorth, lost his life in the accident.

Mr McSherry and his wife were taken to New Cross Hospital in Wednesfield and were both in a serious condition. The father-of-two had to have his spleen removed and a heart operation. He also broke bones in his legs. Mrs McSherry broke her left leg and suffered lung damage. “We have struggled over the last few months,” the former Pontin’s entertainment manager said.

“We have had to convert our living room into a bedroom because we can’t get upstairs. Our kids have had to be our carers since the crash.

The couple have two sons, Daniel, aged 15 and Dominic, 12.

Despite their horrific injuries, Mr McSherry said the pair would do all they could to try and re-open the tea rooms for their loyal customers. “We have to keep believing we can open Poplar Cottage up once again,” Mr McSherry said.

“We’ve had a lot of support from our customers. If we can open again then we will.”
