Di Matteo backing chairman’s stance

Monday 23rd November 2009, 10:59AM GMT.

ALBION 7 SL 02Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo is happy to back chairman Jeremy Peace’s risk-free planning for Albion as the club senses its fourth Premier League promotion of the decade.

The Baggies swept past Bristol City – previously beaten only twice in the Championship – with such conviction on Saturday that a return to the top flight is in danger of being taken for granted by Albion fans.

Di Matteo’s team can be knocked off the top if Newcastle win at Preston tonight, but their form and goal-scoring power has the Hawthorns buzzing with promotion talk.

The manager wants to improve his squad and has targets in mind for the January transfer window.

But Peace is a chairman reluctant to chase business in January, when he believes buying clubs get poor value for money, and refuses to risk Albion’s long-term financial welfare by over-extending the club in the transfer market.

His head coach insists he is happy to work under those constraints.

Di Matteo even joked: “I have been to see the chairman and they are hiding from me as I am asking for some money. We have targets. I am not a manager who panics and rushes into decisions.

“My duty is to improve the team and add value to the club, rather than put them into financial problems. It’s a shared responsibility.

“The supporters can be assured with the chairman that the club will not disappear”

If Albion get promoted then I dont really see us
needing to spend millions on players, most of the
players in our squad have already proved
themselves at Premier League Level, all Roberto
Di Mattteo needs to finish the jigsaw would be
a half decent striker to play alongside Ishamel
    Miller.

Risk-free this is why we went for a cheap option Manager. Hopefully it will come good but as we head into a long, hard winter and injuries kick in etc will he have the experience and the man management skills to get us through it? I hope hope JP’s risk-free strategy works. It put Dave Jones and Alan Irvine off but if he succeeds with it I will be the first to say I was wrong.

I don’t think our fans will take anything for granted. We’ve been down this route too many times in recent years and know that this division can kick you in the teeth.
Having said that, we’re in a much stronger position than on any of the previous years.
Under TM we had a haphazard defence and no tacklers in midfield. Under Sir Gary we were solid but had little flair to break teams down. Under RDM we have a good blend.
The defence looks more solid every week, we now have not one but two midfield tacklers, both of whom are very good footballers as well. We have skill and variation out wide in Brunt and Thomas, with Morrison to add. Up front possibly our weakest area, Roman now has to fight his way back in and hopefully sooner rather than later Ish to come back, I think he’ll be much more effective now that we move the ball forward more quickly.
Add to this that we have a squad of quality players, look at some of the teams behind us and once you get past their first XI’s they lack any depth (I’d include Newcastle in that.)
One final plus point, our financial position means that we can add players if we need to and have yet to use the loan market.
Half term report, very satisfactory but as I’ve said, we’re Baggies, we take nothing for granted.

    2. I completely disagree. You need to be a realist. RDM is doing a quality job with what he has got but the only players we have capable of playing ih the prem are Olsson, Dorrans, Morrison.Brunt scored a few at the end of the season but he looked out of his depth. We would need massive investment.

I have to say I’d back the new improved Zuiverloon to do a job in the Prem, Mattock’s been getting better and better – pity he’s out now but we’ve got Cech to come in which should please him. Even Meite’s looking like he could cope in the Prem. Thomas, Mulumbu and Jara will all do fine and Miller up front. So just a right-winger and a striker and cover for every position then…

I still think Zuiverloon could handle the Prem, remember he`s only a young kid who`s
still learning the trade,he started the season really well and probably went off the boil knowing
    we were going down.
    Marek Cech,Yousouff Mulumbu,Roman Bednar,
    Ishmael Miller,Gianni Zuiverloon,Gonzalo Jara,
    Robert Koren,Felipe Teixiera,Jerome Thomas,
James Morrison,Abdoulaye Meite could also handle
    the Prem.
there`s only a couple of players in our squad
who couldnt handle it and we all know who they
are with one of them being farmed out to
    Coventry City.
This Roberto Di Matteo knows what he`s doing
and will take Albion to next level and this
    time keep us there.
Iam still convinced that all Albion need to
survive in the Prem is a Georgious Samras type
striker to play alongside Ishmael Miller.
This Albion 11 would be ace:
    CARSON,ZUIVERLOON,MEITE,OLSSON,CECH,
    BRUNT,JARA,DORRANS,MORRISON,SAMARAS,MILLER.

Meggo dragged this club back from the brink with bite but lacked flair, Mowbray had flair but lacked bite. I can see signs of both men’s assets with our third ‘M’ and we are now a strong running, hard tackling side with goal scorers all over the pitch. That is NOT an accident, nor is it cavalier, devil-may-care stuff. Professionalism is what I see, in a very young side. That’s what gives me hope that this time we may get up and stay up. For the Wulfies: Did you actually expect to get anything from Arsenal and Chelsea? There was a bloke on BRMB on Saturday saying MicMac got you up by accident and fluke. RUBBISH! Lick your wounds and get on with it. It ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings next May.

As for the left back position. Joe Mattock is steadily improving and has played his part in what is becoming a slid back four. I hope Marek Cech can replace him. All in all, the club is in great shape and have a perfect balance between attacking flair and defensive solidity. The way the club is being run is first class, the whole set up top notch now – the scouting system in particular.

Jobs not done yet of course, we need a decent striker in January and possibly another defender. I’m one very happy Shropshirebaggie at the moment.

We have a much improved and more committed squad this season than we have had for a long while.

We also have at long last got a Coach/Manager that has for once sorted out our leaky defence, he has got a little bit of work to do with the strikers and then it’s Prem here we come. And this time there will be no Yo-Yoing in and out of the Prem we are going up to stay.

The one commitment that JP has got to do, is give RDM a bloody good lengthy contract to keep him and the rest of his team at the Hawthorns.

    C’mon you Baggies !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bottom line, after 50 games managing in the top league, Mick’s record hardly inspires confidence.

Just been over for another look (there are now 145 posts on there.) Although it’s mildly addictive, best not stay on too long as you risk a hernia, Woody Allen couldn’t write anything funnier.
One suggestion on there is to take banners saying ‘you promised you wouldn’t do an Albion.’ Er, chance would be a fine thing. Why don’t we take banners? Oh that’s it, we stay behind our managers and players, even when they crap on us later. That’s what being supporters is all about.
The mighty 3 M’s from the end of last season are now the 3 stooges, ‘what a difference therteen games makes’ as Esther Phillips would have said. The much maligned and infamous Bob Wolf and JIWAL now appear to be almost with the ‘happy clappers’ in the liberal camp.
The pro Mick brigade are now counting on the easy 6 points coming from Blues and Bolton. Let’s wait and see.
PS. This isn’t anti-Wolves. I’ve nothing against Winslow, Debenham etc that post good stuff while still supporting their team. It’s for the crowd that were all over here like a rash. Telling us that they would show us how it’s done. Not as easy as you thought is it?

I really do have faith in RDM… I think he could be the guy to finally to do the job. The man that will be mentioned on match of the day every saturday as West Brom manager for a fair few years to come

Am I dreaming too much now?? :)

Good to see he has a sense of humour because a couple of weeks ago he seemed a bit down when things wasnt going so well. Just hope the joking around lasts because we all know what happens with chairman and manager in the end….

Talking of the chairman, I have often knocked him but u cant put him down when once again we are climbing out this division with 1 foot in the premier league again. Although its early days yet.
But I still stand by that he is not the chairman to take us to the next level. I do have doubts whether we will ever establish in the top flight with him in charge and odd decisions like reducing ground capacity do nothing to help his case.
I also dont think its fair to say Albion fans take getting promoted for granted… if anything, I think JP takes getting promoted for granted. And trusts in the running of the financial club too much, in a way that means we are always strong in this league, therefore always guaranteed to bounce back.
But who i am I to argue??

We always are strong in this league, and we always do get promoted! But one day we may not and it may turn round and bite us all on the a**!

But before I get bashed by the minority, yet very opinionated and sensible Pro-Peace brigade, I will stick up for him that we will always be secure and YES I am happy at the moment to to trust Peace for a little while longer, he has that abilty to keep extending our faith in him.

And take note: (Always optimistic), I actually think if we do go up, next time we may have the experience, the team and the manager to stay up and make it work… without an ambitious chairman with deep pockets and financial clout. Good times ahead I hope

Good post and I agree with much of what you say. The thing is that you still ignore the $64,000 dollar question. What do you want JP to do? He can’t bankroll us, he simply doesn’t have that sort of money. The alternative is the equivelent of putting the clubs money on lucky number 7 and spinning the wheel. One in 36 chance of winning and if we do great but if we lose are you happy doing the rounds of league two grounds including Walsall.
‘Well you see I’ve lost count myself but as this is the most powerful handgun in the world you’ve got to ask yourself one question, do you feel lucky punk?’ Sorry Danno, I wasn’t calling you a punk but you know what I mean.
