McCarthy eyes a Chelsea upset

Friday 20th November 2009, 9:35AM GMT.

WIGAN V WOLVES 9 GD 18Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has embraced the chances of causing an upset at Chelsea tomorrow – despite claiming they are facing the cream of Europe.

His second-bottom side go to Stamford Bridge where the Premier League leaders have reeled off nine successive clean sheet victories including Manchester United, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Porto.

But despite being massive 20-1 outsiders to win, the manager is determined to buck that trend.

McCarthy said: “I always take the view that they’ll lose a game and we’re not fancied. If Chelsea end up being the best in the Premier League, they won’t be far off from one of the best in the Champions League.

“Whether they end up being that might hinge on a decision when Liverpool won the European Cup after knocking Chelsea out – was it over the line or not?”

McCarthy will decide today if £6.5million record signing Kevin Doyle will play after his World Cup play-off heartbreak.

Ireland’s Doyle returned to training today after the draining two-legged tie against France.

The Wolves boss said: “We’ll have to look at Kevin because he played for 120 minutes on Wednesday and finished at 11pm.

“It was a tough ending. He won’t have slept a wink. But he’s a great character and he isn’t fragile.”

Ronald Zubar is a slight doubt after picking up a thigh injury in training yesterday, so Kevin Foley could return for his third Premier League start.

Michael Mancienne is ineligible, while Chelsea are without Frank Lampard and Jose Bosingwa, along with almost certainly Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba.
