A Great Barr community centre is hoping to extend the hours it can serve alcohol, prompting dozens of local residents to sign a petition in protest.

Pheasey Park Farm Community Centre, in Hillingford Avenue, is home to a string of community groups from karate clubs to slimming groups and line dancing classes. But it also raises funds through private parties and late night events. Now the centre is hoping to gain a new licence which will allow it to sell alcohol throughout the premises.

If approved the new licence will mean serving hours will change from 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday to 10am to 11pm Monday to Friday and 10am to midnight on Saturdays. Sunday’s hours would also change from midday to 10.30pm to 10am to 8pm.

Letters objecting along with a petition of 66 names have been submitted to Walsall Council’s licensing sub-committee which will make a decision on December 1.

Dale Woodhall, of Hillingford Avenue, is among those who have complained to the council about the proposed extension.

He said: “The community centre is exactly that, a place for the community to meet and socialise, however it is important to appreciate the impact this can have on residents who live in the immediate vicinity and consider their ability to enjoy the quiet within their own homes.”

Other letters sent to the council raise fears about an increase in anti-social behaviour and litter.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: “We have to put up with a lot of aggravation caused by people drinking too much.”

The two floor community centre is currently only able to sell alcohol on the upper floor. It also wants permission to stage more varied events such as discos, wedding receptions and more. No-one from the club was available for comment today.
