Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Bully Bites Back with Steve Bull

Wolves legend Steve Bull gives it to you straight in his weekly column about the one player he doesn’t want to see on the Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge.
It’s agony for any professional footballer to be out injured and have to watch his team-mates from the side-lines, I wouldn’t wish it on anybody. But I might make an exception for Chelsea defender John Terry on Saturday!
Not because I wish him any harm at all – in fact, I hear he’s a nice lad – but because I rate him so highly. Very few players can ever honestly be described as born leaders but Terry is definitely one of them, whether for his club or England.
His team might well be able to replace him with another international-quality centre-back on Saturday, but I’d be willing to bet he doesn’t have the same sort of impact on his side.
Last week, I wrote that I honestly couldn’t really see Wolves getting much from this trip to Stamford Bridge but, with Terry now possibly out and Frank Lampard a definite absentee, this might actually turn out to be quite a good time to play them.
Also, don’t forget that their French players will have been involved in mid-week World Cup action for their country and will have had to fly back to London in time for Saturday.
It gives Wolves boss Mick McCarthy every incentive to tell his players “Don’t give this team too much respect. Let’s go out there and give it a real go!” I would expect that he’ll have specific pre-match instructions for the various departments of his team.
For instance, I’m sure he’ll drill Jody Craddock and Christophe Berra not to get intimidated by Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka going to ground at every opportunity, looking to pick up ‘cheap’ free-kicks around the penalty area, which I’m sure they will.
A strong referee who refuses to give them what they’re looking for could really work to our advantage because both Anelka and Drogba strike me as being stroppy characters, who could then get frustrated enough to start ‘playing’ the referee, rather than our two centre-backs.
I can only hope so, for Wolves’ sake, because when Chelsea’s two frontmen click they’re just about the best combination in the whole of the Premier League. It’s vital we don’t concede an early goal to either of them – and that both Craddock and Berra maintain their concentration for every second of the full 90 minutes.
Saturday won’t just be about defending, though, because, no matter who you play against, there’s always the chance of hitting your opposition on the counter-attack – even if it’s just once in the whole of the 90 minutes.
That’s a point which I’m sure that Mick will be making to Kevin Doyle.
BULLY’S BETS OF THE WEEK: -
It’s a bit of a worry when a centre-back is among your top goalscorers but Jody Craddock is well worth a look again, particularly on any bet involving the full 90 minutes. I would say the same about John Terry but, as I’ve said, I hope he doesn’t play!
