Wolves boss hails ‘fantastic’ fans
Monday 16th November 2009, 11:28AM GMT.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy believes the club’s ‘fantastic’ fans are the key to survival after admitting to be humbled by them this season.
Virtually all of the capacity crowd stayed to the end in the 4-1 defeat against Arsenal, while boss McCarthy had his named chanted by the South Bank.
Wolves will be backed by a following of 3,000 again this Saturday to Chelsea – their fifth sell-out in seven trips this season.
Despite the team being second bottom, McCarthy feels the Molineux masses see a bigger picture and appreciate the job being done.
He said: “It was quite a humble and embarrassed clap which I gave the fans, I have to say. To receive that kind of support when you’re 4-0 down is quite humbling.
“I’d like to think it’s because people are enjoying and respecting the job I’ve done, and the way the lads have gone about their business.
“I think our performances suggest we’ll be alright and that might be why we’re getting the support as well.
“The players, despite being 3-0 down, never let their heads drop and kept working, running and chasing.
“I respect them for that and just think it was lovely they got the support from the fans, even if it was through me with ‘Super Mick McCarthy.’
“Whatever the songs might have been, I think it was testimony to the players for the way they go about their jobs. It was great. I’d like to think the fans understand where we are with a young squad in our first year at this level – in fact I know they do because of how they have responded.
“They’ve been fantastic all season long, and it’s the only way we’ll be successful. That level of support does make a marked difference.
“You could see that we were going to drop into the bottom three afterBurnley had a good result on the Saturday and Hull on the Sunday.
“But no-one is having a panic about that. As I said last year, it’s where you end up at the end of the season that counts and not where you are now or at Christmas.”

Clearly Mick is talking about the fantastic support shown by loyal supporters like Bob Wolf who have paid a fortune to watch the garbage served up this year.
Now clear off Mick and get Ince in.
It is obvious for all to see that you and your players are out of your depth and it will only get worse as the season continues.
You deserve good support Mick. Your an honest manager and basically tell it as it is! We have just been a tad unlucky this season from what I have seen and could easily be sitting on 14 points now.
A united football club. We will not go down. Fantastic fans, great support and we are behind the gaffer and the players. Hull, Portsmouth and Burnley will go down Blues will finish 17th us 16th.
The albion started having confrontations with their players etc and finished bottom. They could learn alot from the wolves.
WE ARE WOLVES.

I said it before but the fans reaction in the Arsenal game was fantastic and it shows how much it means.
Chelsea who ?

Mick you are doing a great job at a lower level of spending. The January Sales are crucial, and a super star is needed up front alongside the wizardry of Kevin Doyle and Superman Sylvan. We need the Brazilian imagination brought into the Wolves.
Too right Mick! – we need the fans to give the players a boost in every single game from now on.

had he been drinking in that interview? – bit of a ramble.
we never doubted we were good fans.
btw saw Bolton first hand vs Villa – and they are absolutely rubbish – it gave me hope

SOME FANS Mick!!!
You’ve got some proper idiots on these pages who can’t see passed their own noses, never mind the bigger picture at Wolves…
We all knew it wasn’t going to be easy this year, and proved right… Maybe a couple of his signings have not worked out (Halford, Milijas so far) but I believe milijas will have a big part to play this season…
Stay strong to the end, and never give up…

Wolves fans have always reacted in a big way to any glint of success. We certainly had some success last season, and we had that a great day out in Cardiff, backin 2003, but the club have not given us any sustained success since the Div 3 and 4 Bully inspired championships. We need Mick to deliver in the next few months and right now he should be kicking the Boardroom door down to make sure them upstairs realise we need to spend big in Jan.Otherwise we will have missed out on another opportunity.
The majority of fans can see what you are doing that’s why they sing your name. The minority are not true Wolves fans because to me you stick with your team through thick and thin and not walk out on them even when sometimes the going gets tough. No one said it was going to be easy, but the work rate, sheer guts and determination that I see by the players is a credit to you and them. As a season ticket holder I go to all matches and I travel away as well, there is nothing like the atmosphere when you travel away. I hope you read these comments. I have the utmost respect for you and the lads and in what your trying to achieve. I truly believe that we will still be in this division next here next season. Good luck to you and the lads. Keep up the good work. I know that there will be some fans that don’t agree.

3) You are the last person he would be referring to – friend of Sir Terry Baggie.
Yes we should have beaten Hull and played better against Pompey but it obvious for all to see that a very young team – the youngest in the Premiership – has stood up and played well against the likes of Fulham, Everton, Villa and Stoke. Three of these teams qualified for Europe and Stoke are Stoke.
We might be in the bottom 3 now but let’s see where we are come the New Year!
Bob wolf what the hell are you on about, get Ince in??!?! I dont know if you remember that he got sacked from Blackburn for failing at this level! Be realistic man!
Keep going Mick and the boys.
Some of you people absolutely amaze me, with what MM has available he has not done so bad. At least they are not like the teams of the past, they DO keep their heads up when things are going badly. A few seasons ago that Arsenal game would have finished up losing by double figures to NIL!
Just read Bob Wolves comments maybe he should stop spending his money because if we have Ince you will have no football team to support.
Mick you have done a fantastic job by getting us up and i thankyou…BUT you record in the Prem is awefull,no excuses this time round, you have spent god knows how much and bought rubbish. I agree with the comments that Mick is a good honest manager, I just feel he has taken Wolves as far as he honestly can.
Fans talk about us spending money at Christmas but think about.
Who is going to come to a club rooted to the bottom of the premier?
Not the sort of player we want but the Campbells and the Carsleys of the world with Mick McCarthy at the helm.
Sorry if the truth hurts.

I think the majority of fans appreciate what you do Michael.
Don’t react to 3) he’s just an attention seeker. I’d rather read Sir Terry’s wind ups, at least they’re a bit of a giggle.
We’ve nicked some good points, but, dropped some bad ones and the three B matches, as they’ve been christened, as well as the transfer window (and that spare cash) are going to be critical.
If I remember right our top goal scorer put us 2-1 up the last time we went to Stamford Bridge…..then Hasselbaink turned up !
We need some luck to come our way too, that is other results to go our way, who would have thought Bham would draw at Anfield and Burnley to draw 3-3 with Man City. MM is great, and I believe we will see the side pick up pace from here on. We’ll have Hanneman (spellling?) in goal now, so no more school boy errors, hopefully he’ll be able to shape the back up too and control the box, we need big Chris back in but he’s still got issues with his foot. We’ll be OK, trust in Mick people.
BobWolf I agree, after losing 5-1 to Charlton and looking like we’ll never get out of this division again, and the fact that Ince flopped spectacularly at Blackburn, can’t believe we took him back. We are saying Ince out McCarthy in defo do a swap with you!!!!
Its aright Mick praising the Wolves fans, but he doesnt condone, the vile and abusive chants aimed at Arsenal and Wenger in particular,by some of the morons on the South Bank.

As many fans know, I normally agree with Bob Wolf, but on this occasion, I do not want Ince as Manager.
Personally i still think Steve Morgan wants his own Man in. That’s not having a dig at Mick, either.

Bob Wolf the Albion Mon – we are doing well as we are stillyoung and learning at this level. Only tiem will tell coem the end of the season – cut out some of the mistakes (which get punished at this level but in trhe championship you can get way with) and i believe we’ll stay up. Need to start putting the ball away more – our goal ratio / chances is not too clever.
Mick and the whole team(including our fans) are doing a great job
Report abuse
Whilst I don’t agree with all the negative Mick out merchants, it is impossible to ignore his record or lack of it at this level. I am all for loyalty at I felt ashamed that I was one of the ones hoping he would take the S.Korea job when it came up becuase he has stopped the rot at this club, built a core of a talented young squad, delivered us a fantastic Championship title and generally got the club going in the right direction…..but and there is a big BUT, when at what point to we hit panic stations? Do we need too are the 3 M’s thinking that relegation and coming back ‘stronger’ won’t be the end of the world? Mick deserves his chance but no one man is bigger than the CLUB and the CLUB must always come first even if that means some painfull decisions. My biggest worry isn’t tactics or team selection, the guy has achieved and forgotten more about the game than any of us will ever know, my worry is the personality of the side imitating Big Micks, one of a hard working, honest….Loser. His intervies are full of one liners about not liking losing ”having our bellies tickled” etc but we seem to have assumed this battling underdog mentality, we are going to give it a go but we’ll prob come up short, I honestly think some of the players don’t truly believe we are going to get results. This isn’t taken from the ridiculous player interviews given to the E&S but more from what I have seen from the style of play and body language ion the pitch. I wrote Burnley off and still think they will implode but they play without fear and look at where it has got them. I have no idea of a viable option if Mick was to go, and I don’t think he will come rain or shine. The fans have been fantastic the lads and the management need to get ruthless ASAP. Bolton, Birmingham, Burnley we have the ability to take 9 points certainly 7 and with that a huge step towards safety and maybe more importantly the belief we deserve to be among the elite!
Mick you have to spend big in January to have any chance of keeping us up!
I’ve heard Benny McCarthy & kevin nolan (buys) & carlos vela & Fran Merida (Arsenal, loan) are on the cards! Lets hope so!

Bobwolf go back to the boing boings where you belong.Managers like Jol or Avram Grant, are what we need,or,dare I mention a Keegan?.Mick the fans will always back the team and would back you if you were capable of doing the necessary but you aren`t.We have to spend some big money in January or we are doomed. It hurts me to say it but Burnley are doing ok and or course The Brummies are too.Look at what you bought and look at ,what they bought, get it Mick? This is not Sunderland.
We will have to spend big in January if we are to stay in this division and get some real experienced prem players on board, the first part of the season has confirmed that ebanks blake, kightly, elokobi,Keogh and Jarvis have not made the step up.We will now see how much ambition Steve Morgan really has for this club come January.
Staffordwolf….That would be amazing but I’m not getting my hopes, not beyond the realms of possibility but certainly the Arsenal boys might be out of reach. Would hope to see Ledley in Jan too, Craig Gardner keeps being linked, and Reo-Coker looks like he is available plus a quality defender preferably left side.
Stafford Wolf
Where have you heard that from, or are you playing FIFA10!!!
Not a chance of getting any of those players. WAGES being the big issue as the board will not spend the dough. You spend big to get quality in this division. Remember what Blues did a few years back and they boufght in 5 players in Jan notably Dugarry and they stopped up. We need a talisman of a player to lift the team because at the moment we are somewhat predestian espeicially in midfield.
Out of interest did anyone see the Edwards display, I thought he was MOTM against Scotland, bossed the midfield against the likes of Mad dog Darren fletcher!
Food for thought.
Spend big – yeah, because we’re the sort of club that will attract big names aren’t we ? Some folk think we’ve been around in this league for 10 straight seasons !! Wakey wakey people – we’ve been out of the big time for all but 2 of the last 22 seasons…….we aint a big name anymore, and it will take careful and considered planning to a) maintain our club in the worst economic times for decades, and b) get to a place where we are a big club again. if you dont have the patience then you may as well support a big four club.

18: Which player ib nthwolves set would possibly dis respect the work Mick McCarthy is doing. So what if Mick is stubborn. We need a strong minded manager to sort this team out.
He may not pick the team you would, however the team he picks have won the league, and are making a real fist of it in the Prem. I would suggest that “stubborn” Mick has been proved correct in his decisions. Whether you like it or not. The facts speak louder than your opinons.
It is beyond me where this petty minded sniping at Mick Mccarthy has come from. I can only think that you have no friends and try to provoke an argument to appease your sad little mind and give yourself a sence of worth.
Or alternativly you want super Freddy Eastwood back from Coventry after his super long scoring run. Or was Mick wrong about freddy too?

21; Good point about being the team at the bottom not being able to attract top players. However I do not think changing the manager will make a jot of difference.
If you were to cahnge the manager we would still be at the bottom and still not able to attract players.

i) At Sunderland he took them up with over 100 points and then was given next to nothing to spend.
ii) He got Ireland to the last 8 of the World Cup.
iii) He took over Wolves with about 12 professionals and brought in many bargain, young and hungry players. Turned them into internationals and took us up within 3 years.
ENOUGH SAID. UP THE WOLVES!!

Pure envy that we are a bigger club with a bigger fanbase. People have a moan on here but never have I seen players and fans go head to head, Kiely, Robinson and Olsson in the last 3 seasons. You got turned down by the Preston manager and had to take a cheap option League 1 manager. Wait until Strachan gets his claws into Borough the play-offs will loom for you. In the words of Karl Hoefkens ” go back to your industrial, poverty stricken area in Sandwell” Got to love the Albion a small time little club with small time little fans, Terry is the most intelligent out of the lot of them!

Laughing,
Last time we were in the same division, Albion had more fans home and away (check your stats), you’ve spent less time in the top flight, have lower record crowds, have won less FA Cups, have been as low as the fourth division……
As for turning on our own players, Olsson was given a standing ovation by 4,000 people and one bloke swore at him. Wolves are renowned nationally for getting on their own team’s back- spitting at Jack Hayward after the Palace game, being voted biggest whingers, booing their own players etc.
Do you really want to go down the history route? You would lose! Paul Robinson had an altercation with your fans on several occasions after they treated one of their ‘heroes’ discracefully, no wonder he left for a bigger club in Bolton! Same with Dean Kiely. Lets take the facts of TODAY into account:
Wolves have a bigger stadium
Wolves a better more modern stadium
Wolves have more trophys in the cabinet
Wolves have a record sponsor, albion no sponsor
Wolves have already beaten your biggest gate of last season
Wolves have more international players
Albion have a much bigger turnover of players
Oh and your point on Olsson, it was more than one bloke because he called them ” a bunch of *******!” Oh and we took 6,000 to Coventry the last 3 seasons. I admire you backing your team but your making yourselves look stupid.
My Dad’s bigger than your Dad laughingwolf. We took 6,001 there in the FA Cup 3 years ago.
You’ve beaten our biggest gate because you have a bigger capacity. Every team that’s ever been promoted to the Premiership has sold out their ground, congratulations, it doesn’t make you a massive club.
Arsenal, Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Man C, Man U, Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds, West Ham all have bigger support than Wolves.
Wolves are no bigger than Sheff W, Derby, Albion, Leicester, Forest, Stoke……the list is endless but for some deluded reason, you all seem to think you’re a massive club, and it’s largely self-defeating.
Wolves have a proud history, I don’t dispute this, but if you take out a couple of years in the fifties, were never even considered Albion’s main rival……that only changed in the last 20 years.
Answer me this laughingwolf, if Sandwell Town are such a small and insignificant club, why are you so obsessed with us?! It undermines your whole argument.

Mick bring Robbie home in Jan. It’s not like Robbie needs the money, he has made so much in tranfer fees since he left us let alone salary, sponsors, add ons & more add ons. He won’t win anything with Spurs so he might as well come & win nothing with us. He will always have his ROI position providing he keeps scoring. He went to his ‘boyhood’ club & didn’t fit with Benitez system rotating the squad. Robbie come back to the club who nurtured you to keep us in the EPL, pay him the same as the Doyle with a bonus at the end of the season if we stay up.
On another note, I hope we have been practicing shots from distance during the International break for our visit to Chelsea, & with Bosnigwa, Lampard & Drogba, Cole (possibly Terry) out they will still probably have more than enough to push us to one side, but boys go down there & give it 120% & you never know, might just catch them on an off day.
