Ward relishing his return
Saturday 14th November 2009, 12:51PM GMT.
STEPHEN Ward is relishing his return to full training next week determined to add to Wolves’ left-back dilemma after revealing: “I’ve turned the corner”.
The Irish utility man is seven days ahead of boss Mick McCarthy’s prediction earlier this week of rejoining his team-mates after recovering from cartilage surgery.
And the 24-year-old is hoping to join Richard Stearman and George Elokobi in a three-way fight for the full-back role, if not for Saturday’s Chelsea game then soon after for what would be his 100th Wolves appearance.
“Hopefully I’ll be ready to join in full training at some point next week,” said Ward.
“I’ve still got a bit more fitness work before joining in with the rest of the lads but I’m there or thereabouts.
“It’s good to be fit again – it feels like I’ve turned the corner.”
Ward started the season as McCarthy’s first-choice left-back, playing the first three games before succumbing to the injury after the 1-0 defeat at Manchester City on August 22.
But now he can see a return to the Premier League on the horizon.
“I’ve had some experience, I know what to expect, and am looking forward to giving the gaffer another option,” he said. “I’ve had a taste of it and just want some more.”
Wary
However, after two months out, Ward is wary of hurrying back too soon against the League leaders at Stamford Bridge.
“I’m not setting any targets,” he said. “I can’t look too far ahead. I’ve stepped up my rehab and the signs have looked good.
“If I continue to progress, I should get some sort of training in during the week.
“There’s no point rushing back and if you have to take extra time, you make sure you’re right.
“I’ve worked hard on my rehab and all I’m hoping for is to train again next week.”
Ward is hoping his return coincides with better luck for the team.
“I’ve seen a lot of the games and feel we’ve done well,” he added.
“We’ve just needed a little bit of luck from time to time and hopefully we’ll get that in the games in the lead-up to Christmas which are going to be vital.”
