Wolves happy to exclude Old Firm
Friday 13th November 2009, 11:28AM GMT.
Wolves are happy with the decision to exclude Celtic and Rangers from entering the English Premier League.
A vote taken to gauge interest in the idea of allowing Glasgow’s Old Firm into the Premier League was met by an emphatic ‘no’ from the 20 member clubs at a three-and-a-half hour meeting at the Marriott Hotel in London’s Gloucester Square yesterday.
Under Premier League rules, 14 clubs had to vote for the proposal to take it further, but the idea never got off the ground. Afterwards, Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore added the Glasgow giants would never join the Premier League.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey, who once worked as Rangers’ commercial manager, was tightlipped on which way he voted.
But the Molineux supremo did reported a lack of support in the motion, suggested by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside as part of the ongoing strategic review of the Premier League.
Moxey said: “We briefly discussed the issue and there was no appetite to take it further, because there was not enough interest from the clubs. It didn’t get past Stage A.
“It is the English Premier League after all and I think the message is quite clear. It’s our product and we’re working on our product.
“Yes, there are Welsh clubs in the English League, but they have been part of the fabric of our game and its history for over 100 years.”
Villa boss Martin O’Neill and Birmingham counterpart Alex McLeish – former managers of Celtic and Rangers respectively – had previously spoken in support of the idea, but Wolves boss Mick McCarthy – a former Celtic player – reckoned there was no chance of the Old Firm being allowed in.
Several reasons were suggested against the proposal, which was felt favoured by the Old Firm purely to get a share of the much more lucrative TV revenue in England.
But other opposition included the unfairness of including Celtic and Rangers at the exclusion of famous English clubs.

“Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey, who once worked as Rangers’ commercial manager, was tightlipped on which way he voted”.
I quite like Moxey, but why the secrecy or lack of a direct answer? I for one am glad Rangers and Celtic are excluded.

Who cares?

I am thankful that common sense has prevailed here!!

too right. If the wanna join start from the bottom like AFC Wimbledon or that Man United one

Thank god for that! They’re not even good enough!

Scottish football is shocking anyway

I totally agree to exclude those Scots from our Premier League!
The scottish idiots have only one thing on their agenda and that is to make even more money out of football BUT they have forgotten one very important fact – At present both Celtic and Rangers are almost automatic entrants into the Champions League but in joining either division of the PL, they would not get a smell of CL football because the English clubs would be too strong for them!
That would mean them ‘gaining on the swings but losing on the roundabouts’ PLUS they would no longer be big fish in a small pond!
So sorry Scots, it is the likes of Falkirk, Dundee and whoever for you again!!!

6. Well obviously, that’s why the two best teams want to move. Some people are so dull its untrue…

With an affinity for Celtic I am pleased that neither team will join the English scene. It would compromise the integrity of Scottish football, and the Scottish. It’s up to them where else they look but previously federations with other celtic and Scandanvian countries have been proposed.

Might be a good idea….would be a guaranteed 12 points for us…

We may have a few problems down here in England, but, the LAST thing we want is for the Old Firm to bring their religious bigotry to our grounds…that something (thank God !!!) we do not have to suffer.

No actual evidence Wolves were “happy” to exclude them is there? Moxey wouldn’t say which way he voted, and it’s clear that 6 PL clubs DID infact vote to let them in and Moxey is also an ex Rangers employee. McCarthy merely voiced an opinion that he did not “think” they would be allowed in, totally different to he did or did not “want” them in.

A good decision for the West Midlands Police!
No need for them to practise Hello Hello Hello -what are we drinking here!
Good decision i think, no need for it. If they want to join the english leagues they should at least start in league two, they have no right for automatic promotion. Cardiff and Swansea have to do it that way so should they.
No. 4, totally agree.
why would they expect to go straight into the premiership when huge clubs like notts forest and newcastle are in a lower division, if they wanna come in our league, start at the bottom but I wouldn’t want them in anyway, it would just open up the debate again for the big, greedy clubs to create their own european super league.
Anyone else think there should be a rule in that states the premiership prize money should be shared equally, apparently man united had 20 million more than Albion last season, this just makes it increasingly harder to keep up with the big teams.

CELTIC fans disrupted the minutes silence for our war heros last weekend at falkirk by singing ira songs! if you dont believe me look on you tube, they also did this for the queen mothers silence aswell a few years back.
I would not have them scumbags in the scottish league let alone the english league.

I think letting them in would be a step too far. For a start its unfair on championship teams trying to break into the premiership. Its also unfair on the teams they would leave behind. Why should Rangers and Celtic be allowed in and Harts and Hibs not.
An alternative for now is to maybe consider a merge of the league cups or FA cups instead. It would make for some much needed injection into the interest of the cups, inject money into the lower Scottish leagues and still give Celtic and Rangers some exposure to other English teams.

Let them in,that should cover the bottom two places before we even start.

The Jocks make you laugh.
They want to reject our Parliment and Legal system to incorporate their own, even though the Briish democracy is the freeist in the world.
They want independance from Britain but enjoy the fruits of the health service, free prescriptions, defence etc whilst enjoying English & Welsh taxes to pay for their roads, police, junkies etc.
They reject the Protestant ideas for the hypocritical Catholism idea, no contreception, no sex before marriage, the church rules over the bible etc.
But when it comes to football they are willing to sell their greedy souls to the world famous English Premier League in order to rescue their once famous mediocre clubs from obscurity. They have spotted a band waggon and missed it because they want to be Scottish, leaving their football, much like their ideals, in the dark ages.
So, in my opinion…………..Tough, its better to be English after all!

Lets compromise…just let Rangers join.

Stupid debate. They will never be allowed in. Why? Because no one wants their supporters anywhere near them, a revolting bigoted bunch of drunken thugs unlike the angelic sweet natured English hooligans. It can never happen in a million years so let’s talk about something really important like beating Chelsea.

12 Reality
Where does is say that 6 clubs voted for the proposal? It actually said it needed 14 to vote for it but they didn’t get anywhere near that. I can’t see any mention of 6 clubs voting for it.

“British democracy is the freeist (sic) in the world” ? You’re having a laugh, right ? We’ve got no written Constitution, an unelected House of Lords, and more surveillance than any other country in the world. As a football fan you should be well aware that the Police can stop you going about your lawful business for the flimsiest of reasons.
“They reject Protestant ideas for the hypocritical Catholism (sic) idea…” What ?!
Only about 16% of Scots are Catholic. About half are Protestant, and about 28% describe themselves as non-religious. That’s more than in England. There haven’t been Catholic laws in Scotland for more than 400 years. I suspect that you’re thinking of Ireland ?
Mind you – Scottish clubs shouldn’t be allowed to play in England. They made their bed long since. They can lie in it.

The correct decision has been made. How can you “invite” teams into the elite league when you have teams in The Championship and below striving to get there one day by their own endeavours. I started supporting Wolves when we were in the top flight back in the 60s – am really pleased to see a trad team like Burnley doing well – and fondly remember Sheff Weds Nottm Forest Huddersfield Town Ipswich Norwich Leeds etc etc – competeing in the top flight !! The chance to do so should never be taken away from our English League clubs !!
