Walsall will send defender Jamie Vincent for more scans in a bid to solve the mystery of his recurring calf injury.

The Saddlers will be without the experienced full-back for tomorrow’s home meeting with Stockport and manager Chris Hutchings has admitted the injury has caused some head-scratching at the Banks’s Stadium.

He said: “We’re still having problems with Jamie’s calf. It keeps cramping up on him, so we’re having to send him for more tests to find out the root of the problem. It has been two or three weeks now that he’s been out and we need to get to the bottom of it.

“He’s had certain tests and scans that revealed nothing, so we’ll have to have more intensive scans to find out what the real problem is. He did it during the warm-up at Colchester, so he wasn’t sprinting or doing anything in a game where he pulled up sharply.

“But every time he does his rehab he works to a certain limit and then looks to kick on and do a little bit more the next day and all of a sudden it cramps up on him.

“So we’re a little bit mystified at the present time and we’re going through the relevant tests.

“He did all of pre-season and must have played the first 12 games and there were no problems. He’s not missed a day’s training before so it has come as a bit of a shock.”

Vincent is one of a trio of players missing for tomorrow, with Richard Taundry’s hamstring injury still a problem.

Hutchings is also refusing to take any more risks with goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin’s hamstring, after being forced to name him as an emergency substitute at Stourbridge last week.

The manager said: “Rene will hopefully be training full-time with us again on Monday. He’s been having good rehab with Jon Whitney the physio and we don’t want any setbacks this weekend.

“Obviously he was risked last weekend and it was in the hope that we wouldn’t have to put him on.

“Richard Taundry should be joining in hopefully next Thursday from a hamstring injury, if he’s not had any repercussions from the early part of next week.”
