Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Wayne’s world class for manager
Thursday 12th November 2009, 11:35AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy believes Wayne Hennessey is developing into a top class goalkeeper – after hailing his “stunning” Premier League arrival.
The Wales international has seen off the challenge of summer signing Marcus Hahnemann as the side’s only ever-present with captain Karl Henry this season, making his 100th appearance for the club in the recent 2-2 draw at Stoke.
McCarthy said: “Hennessey has been brilliant. He’s 22 and a fabulous goalkeeper. He’s maturing into a really top class goalkeeper – he’s absolutely top drawer.
“I just think he’s had a stunning season so far.”
The manager quickly dismissed any notion that Hennessey is being pushed by Matt Murray joining the road to recovery from long term injury.
McCarthy believes Murray, who came off after just 23 minutes of his comeback in the reserves’ 2-0 win over Birmingham on Tuesday, is still some way off challenging for the No 1 spot.
The Wolves boss said: “He isn’t pushing him at all – Matt is looking to get back after his first reserve game in a year. He might come back but it will be at least six weeks.
“That takes us to Christmas – that’s how many games and how many points? We’re delighted to have him back but let’s get him back in baby steps – we’re not pushing him.”
Hennessey was unfortunate to be beaten by two own goals against Arsenal, the first scored by Ronald Zubar, which was prompted by Cesc Fabregas’ almost freakish, low trajectory corner.
McCarthy added the quality of set-pieces delivered by the Spaniard are virtually impossible to defend.
He said: “They were great deliveries – if you put corners in like that, they are hard to deal with. It was a fabulous delivery – I didn’t think it should have ended up in our net, but I’m not going to apportion blame to anybody.”

Wayne might be a great shot stopper and is a big presence when it’s one on one, however he is still suspect at corners and long ball deliveries.
He needs to comand his area with more authority. Otherwise the future looks bright….

yes he is young and learning ………but does anyone else think he has been a fault for a number of soft goals this season? I thought he was very flappy against arsenal and a couple of others.
And yes again i know he is young and will get better but we need someone consistent now. I myself while i know its a pipe dream would love Murray back.

Wayne HAS to command that box like Murray does. Murray takes so much pressure off. Hence the reason we finished 5th in the lower division with a bunch of kids and non-league players 3 years ago.
I know some people will disagree but we have missed Keoghs movement and creativety. Ebanks-B is too static to work with Doyle and Keogh and Doyle looked really good today, always got the Hoff on the bench.

He’s done well i’ll agree with that, and he’s developing, but I dont think he’s been top class. Obviously the PL is going to be much more of a challenge to goalkeepers as well as players as the finishing is much better, but for a couple of the Arsenal goals, i thought he could of done much better.
However he’s still only 22, and if he carries on as he is, then we do have a top international goalkeeper on our hands. Good Luck to him!

Top class keeper who has had a great season so far. Well done Wayne

He has been brilliant in some games but someone of his height should be catching or making big punches of anything 8 yards from the goal line. I would say that two goals were his fault on Saturday.
One thing that I do not understand is why do we not have anyone on front or back posts for free kicks and corners. From our attacking play there have been a few cleared off the line. Wolves never have anyone on the line!

Id put Ikeme, Hahnneman and Murray ahead of Wayne.

you know what Laughing wolf as much as i’ve whinged about keogh i have to agree with you.
seb just isnt with it. will he ever be at this level. last year he head keogh and looms assisting him and he flourished but now seems incapable of making his own chances.
we desperately need another proven striker in Jan.

I don’t know if it is the same with fans at other clubs, but a lot of Wolves fans think a keeper is weak on his line unless he comes for every corner and knocks 6 players out of the way and catchs the ball on his chin.Hennessey is doing fine. The delivery from corners from the likes of Fabregas is world class. They don’t just tee up a ball for the keeper to catch.People should check out other keepers in the Prem,no one comes for every corner.

Every fan can see it, so why can’t Mick and his staff?!
On rare occasions does Hennessey ever command his box or catch crosses, and he’s been at fault for a number of goals this season. For someone who is 6’7″ is inexcusable.
in particular, when James came to Molineux, he caught everything and dominated his box. Hennessey should be doing the same. That was Murray’s strength and what makes him a better all round keeper.
Yes he’s good a t shot stopping, but that’s the minimum requirement for a keeper, otherwise what’s the point having one.
There’s no doubt he’s got great potential, but what frustrates me is that if he does fulfill it, he’ll make the mistakes and learn with us but eventually get snapped up by a bigger club.
I feel we made a mistake by not signing a first team keeper with experience, as Hahnemann is clearly not the answer. one of the reasons stoke were so strong last year is the fact Sorensen is an excellent experienced premiership keeper.
Mick’s made another mistake by not sorting this problem out. As its becoming clear, the majority of our championship players are not quite cutting it, yet none of the summer signings are any better.

You can’t blame a goalkeeper on Saturday for 2 freakish own goals, a brilliant goal and bad defending. Can’t understand how people criticise him. In the 2 full seasons he’s had he’s had more clean sheets than any other modern wolves keeper! I think people need to realise that it’s going to be a long hard season for all of us!

I agree with everyone including MM that he’s got more to come yet as he is only 22, but I also agree with No.1 Wolvesonandon but i do think, and I have said this before I do not think that Wayne has been the same since Bobby Mimms left. He make some brilliant saves but he also scares the life out of me sometime Wolvesonandon you are right he needs to command his box with more authority. Having said that I still think we are going to stay up. MM hit the nail on the head when he said the blood is running hot when it should be running cold. We will survive as my scarf says WE BELIEVE IN YOU WELL I DO ANYWAY.Come on lets see if we can upset Chelsea.

i can’t believe these people who are saying to opt with hahnemann for the next game. Waynes been terrific. And besides hahnemann was diabolical at old traffic in the carling cup.
Wayne has done well considering his age, but I think he development has been hampered ever since bobby mimms left the club!
MM said in another piece he stuck with Big George abit too long, well we all knew that but his stubborness to see the light will cost Wolves relegation. I think MM is a victim of his own downfall, we had all summer to get a system going, a good team together and at the moment apart from Doyle and in patches Wayne & Henry we have no one in our side who will pull up trees this season. Young and hungry…. Young and starving more like!

You have to smile at these articles which tend to appear during the international break.
So far this season, we’ve had a string of plaudits for the likes of Elokobi, Hennessey, Henry, Zubar etc etc. Anybody would think we’re knocking on the door of Europe!
Just as when Moxey declared himself completely satisfied with the work he’d done getting this squad together before August was out, let’s wait until we genuinely have something to shout about before we have any more back-slapping.
The fact remains that collectively, the team, the Manager and the Board are not living up to the predictions and targets they set for themselves and until they do, a little more measured language from all of them wouldn’t go amiss!

Sorry Chris, can’t agree when you look at the Arsenal game – I watched it back on tv – the first goal went right to Wayne at waist height in the six-yard box – he totally mis-judged it and there was no Arsenal player challenging him. When he punched the ball for the fourth, again there was no challenge – he should have caught it – no question. In neither case was he asked to come any further than his 6-yard box and in neither case was he put under any pressure. MM is bigging him up in public and I’ve no problem with that, it’s his job to keep his player’s confidence up, but privately, he must have seen what we saw and hopefully is working on it.

no offence mick but wayneo has one clean sheet all season and our defence is well dodgey with craddock being the only exception, i rate you as a manager but we need to give hannermann a go i reckon sorry but dont rate hennessey never have hope he proves me wrong mind you

He is how it goes on this board! People say certain players are not as good as others. Ie Berra and Manncinne along with Wayne and Matt. Then we have the player that people think are “better” in the team. Few weeks later they moan about them!
Wayne has made far more world class saves than mistakes which cost goals this season. He is gaining more confidence around the box.
Simple fact is Wayne will be a better goalkeeper than Matt (And I think Matt is great) because he will have played more Premiership and International games than Matt.
We can all state Matt is this and that. Had this potential, but fact is we will never know how good he would of been!

16)Razor. You are spot on with your assessment of the Arsenal goals but you should have added Zubar too was at fault giving daft fouls and corners away, particularly the first when we were probably on top.
Wayne is still learning but he IS good enough to be our premiership goalkeeper and he HAS made some world class saves. He’s also dropped some clangers, mind, but there aren’t many keepers who don’t at some point. I don’t see Ikeme, nor (particularly !) Hanahman taking his jersey…..and Murray….well, who knows ?

I agree with MM up to a point[I must be ill]but Hennessey must command his area better. The 6yd.area should be his and he should be the boss in set-pieces.I would still like to see Hannehmann get a run but I can`t see that happening yet.I hope MM is a bit more positive with his comments to the players about Chelsea than he was with Arsenal.Hard work and disciplineand we might just get a result.

I dont think for a minute MM believes what he is saying,..it is just psychological talk to gee up Hennessey, and fair play for that,… look recently he said the same about Keogh, but one bad game and we havnt seen him since(unfairly i hate to say!), same with big George, Halford etc, we got the same kinda comments but they too have been dropped,
Personally i think Hennessey has had a very poor start to the season, with a total lack of command, and sadly the Premier league dosnt give you time to “cut your teeth” or “find your feet”

Saw him last Sunday at Telford Golf Club,
Waiting to get into a Helicopter, it had to wait
for it to land, because he wouldn,t have caught
it in Mid-Air.
So much for the credit crunch, when he can Swan
off in a chopper at 3k a day. Who,s the fools.

He’s a good young goalie, but that is the issue. He flaps at crosses, was very much at blame for some of the Arsenal goals and weekly has no command in the box. We need an experienced keeper whilst he learns in reserve.
I must be world class too if he is.
He’s the worst performer for us this season and I hope MM sees the light soon.
He has the very odd good game, otherwise he’s a third-rate Phil Parkes.
I think he’s been top class, he doesn’t quite command his box yet but he’s been improving that area I believe. Goalies don’t really peak until 30s and soon he will be snapped up by a top four club, he has already been linked with Arsenal.
He will be considered one of the best in europe in ten years time.
Mick McCarthy is great at giving his players a confidence boost but does he really believes what he says?
I only saw the Arsenal game on tv and Hennessey could almost be called ‘Hesitatesey’ for he does not command his box like a top class goalkeeper should.
Ok he’s only 22yo but commanding your box and giving orders to the players in front of you is his job, if he cannot do that then his career at the top level will be relatively short.
Unfortuanately he is not the only one in our team who does not command play. From what I saw the other evening, we have players who are workmanlike but run all over the place instead of holding position and making the opposition come to them. Against Arsenal, we got out of position and made space for all and sundry to play havoc and 4 goals were the result, still we have the Chelsea game to get it right… although somehow I don’t think that game will be any different!

wayne will cost wolves 25 daft goals this season with his lack of aerial command, ive read about 20 comments here saying exactly how it is ! great stopper poor command in the air.send your cv,s in lads the current manager cant see it !the outfield players are fighting for their lives,a top goalie should be a priority.

This is one of the tough decisions MM needs to make. To stay up we need to concede less goals and have a more solid defence. It all starts with the keeper, if he commands his area and comes for crosses, corners, it does give confidence to the defenders.Hennesey is a terrific keeper but weak in commanding his area, and organising the defence. If we keep giving away silly goals, most from corners and crosses, he has to be dropped and hannerman or ikeme must be given a chance. For Me Murray is the best keeper all round at the club, I just wish he was fit. Joe Hart may not be a better all round keeper to hennesey but he comes for crosses, and look how few goals brum concede??
There seems to be a problem with Mick M Being too patient for too long,as with George E for example. How many more goals to be conceded before a change of keeper?.Ok,if the replacement is not up to it either, then at least we know.Don’t expect easy points from the teams around us,Wolves are fighting for their Premier League existence now and the manager, coaches and players have to lift their game or else it will quickly be too late. The formula is,better passing equals more chances equals more goals.Go for it!

Hennesseys a brilliant keeper and will only get better, really think he needs to improve with his attacking of crosses but no footballer is perfect and as already mentioned, it’s rare nowadays that many goalkeepers are good at crosses, other than james and van der saar I struggle to think of any premiership goalkeepers that couldn’t do with improving in that area.
Anyone who thinks that hahnemann (a goalkeeper released from a team struggling to survive the championship) or ikeme (good but clearly not as good as Hennessey) are better than wayne are mad. They’re good keepers but I’ve seen enough of them to think Wayne is definitly best out of the three. While Murrays probably better than the lot, he really needs to concentrate on getting fit first, rushing him back would be a very bad idea, hopefully give him time and he’ll be back.
ps im also concerned at our idea of not bothering with men on the posts for set-pieces, hope we change this soon.
Positive thinking, Up the Wolves!

the only problem is MM’s lack of consistency he will drop players if they have a bad run but not certain players and thats wrong hennessey has made quite afew mistakes and doesn’t control his box he needs a spell on the bench to give him a kick up the a***

Hennessey is a great shotstopper, but so are the majority of sunday league goalies, it’s bread and butter stuff.
The jam is getting your positioning correctly and commanding your box and Hennessey hasn’t been doing that and that’s not good enough.

When are Wolves fans going to stop being so fickle and just get on an support their team instead of ripping into them all the time. I agree with Mick saying Wayne is developing into a world-class keeper. He is 22 years old and has done a tremendous job for us! but remember football is a team game and there are another 10 players out on the field. People keep harping on about ‘how good Matt Murray is’ but he aint played for us for two years! Support the lads who got us into the Prem and doing their best to keep us there and not the ones who have contributed nothing! Well done Wayne on your excellent game yesterday for Wales! and well done on the great job you are doing for us down at Molineux
