Plan to axe leisure centre

Thursday 12th November 2009, 4:25PM GMT.

WD3479568@ROLLING TS 15Willenhall Leisure Centre will close and council tax bills will rise by 4.5 per cent under drastic cost-cutting measures revealed today.

Jobs will be shed at Walsall Council and departments across the authority will be ordered to slash their spending as part of draft budget proposals.

These are due to go before the decision-making cabinet on Wednesday. Savings of more than £11.2 million have been outlined through “efficiencies” across all services and a drive to generate more income, and chiefs are warning of more to come.

The authority will also look to save £280,000 in landfill costs by increasing recycling above existing targets, while even the Mayor’s stand-in chauffeur will be axed.

Council leader Mike Bird today admitted that setting the budget had been “hard work” given the anticipated drop in government funding.

But he said it was expected that the reduction in jobs would be made through not filling vacant posts – avoiding compulsory redundancies.

Councillor Bird said the recent opening of the Wednesfield Swimming and Fitness Centre, across the border in Wolverhampton, had affected the number of people using Willenhall Leisure Centre.

“It’s been hit very hard by the new centre and far fewer people are going through the doors,” he said.

“With less and less disposable income, leisure is not at the top of people’s agendas at the moment.

“I think that in the next two or three years, leisure centres across the borough will come under threat and some of them will disappear.”

If the cabinet approves the draft proposals they will be discussed by the council’s scrutiny and performance panels as part of a general consultation period.

So by shutting a leisure resource and suggesting that future centres are under threat, the Council are willing to recognise that health and well being, obesity and stress will increase in the population, and that we should go to neighbouring councils to use their facilities. What ever happened to the idea that councils provide services for local people – public services regardless of cost so that we get what we pay for. I’m starting to wonder what we actually get for our council tax – lots of paper and meetings but nothing for the local people.

Stopping water in the Civic will go a small way to cost saving – try looking at the wider budget and making sensible decisions rather than cutting your leg off rather than dieting just to reduce your weight!

Why are councils shutting leisure centres, yet telling us all to get fit?
So much for the government getting us to keep healthy.
I know how to save money, get rid of Council Xmas party, turn the lights of in town hall/ civic centre, close print unit use local businesses and stop buying bottled water for meetings.

    Dear All,

There is a leisure centre in Wednesfield, which is close to Willenhall.

Why should two neighbouring authorities waste our money by duplicating services?

Why are we so keen to shout “stop wasting money” for some things, and yet not for others? Let’s get our story straight!

If a new Tesco opened near to an old Sainsburys, and that Sainsburys then was losing customers, and applied to the Council for a grant to keep itself afloat, you’d all be screaming daylight robbery. Wouldn’t you?

So when it applies to the public sector, what’s the difference?
