Mayor plan is snubbed

Thursday 12th November 2009, 6:30PM GMT.

Sandwell today became the first authority in the Black Country to reject plans for an elected mayor.

A four-week consultation was launched across the borough’s six towns, asking residents if they wanted a council leader and cabinet, similar to what is in place, or an elected mayor and council manager system.

Just 21 people responded to the consultation, with nine voting for a mayor, with 12 people opting to keep a leader and cabinet system.

Steve Eling, leader of the council said: “Personally I disagree with the elected mayor idea, as do the vast majority of members.

“I believe that the elected mayor model puts far too much power in one person.

“That isn’t good for democracy or decision making,” he added.

Down here in Torbay we have an elected Mayor, principally because the local Northcliffe rag told its readers that one was the best option. I don’t think that anyone now agrees with the ‘newspaper’ any more. Incidentally, although we are much smaller than Wolverhampton, our Chief Executive is paid more than yours!

    Amazing isn’t it!

This Labour government can hold referenda on all the hottest topics NOT being debated in pubs or clubs: such as, do we want an elected mayor or a leader-and-cabinet to run our local authorities. Unsurprisingly, only 21 people in a borough of 260,000 people appear to hold an opinion one way or the other on this most esoteric of subjects.

And yet it singularly refused to give us a referendum on the most pressing issue of our time: namely, whether we want to surrender to an unelected overseas bureaucracy the right to decide our country’s foreign policy, its immigration policy, its taxation policy; in fact, finally handing over the remaining rights of a sovereign nation to govern itself. This, despite Labour promising in its 2005 election manifesto that it would put to a vote of the British people whether or not we wanted to adopt the EU’s Lisbon Treaty, to which a majority of us have been consistently opposed throughout.

Wake up, folks. This Labour government has treated you like children; deliberately failing to consult you about the big decisions it has taken in your name whilst palming you of with ‘consultation’ about trivia.

    Ray,

The reason only 21 people responded is because the “consultation” was just a press release embedded on the Council’s website with a a paragraph at the bottom simply asking people to email the Head of Electoral Services.

Even if you had somehow seen it, and even if you were remotely interested to read to the bottom, how comfortable would you be putting your opinions to someone like that?

In other words Councillors did not want to fund a proper consultation exercise, because they don’t want an elected mayor.

    Why not?

Because it removes their power and makes them less important.

What is the implication of that? That the existing system of cabinet and leader, chosen simply by the ruling group not directly chosen by the electorate has more power, not less, than an elected mayor, which is the usual myth peddled by people.

And Ray, shut up about a referendum on Lisbon.

Even Davo “Cast Iron” Cameron has realised a referendum is pointless – because people’s opinions on the matter are led by emotion, prejudice, hatred and lies rather than intelligent debate and reason. You give a good example of the former.

A similar highly restricted consulation recently took place in Walsall. I saw a minor advertisement in the local newspaper and responded, although the link on the council’s website was very well buried. Bluntly it was an affront to democracy as whether you agree with an elected mayor or not the population should be given a fair means to air their views.

Connor, What are you on about? We should have a referendum on the European question. Succesive Governments have given to much away to Europe on our behalf without consulting us effectively or giving us a choice. We have just had rememberence and i dont think any of the guys who fought in the wars did what they did so we could ultimately be ruled by Europe. Give the people the choice in an pen and fair referendum. I am really disapointed that the tories will not give us that option now and its probably cost them my vote and by the way i will never bow to a European leader… Never!

As for sandwell Council you are absolutely correct! they are all a waste of space and change is needed!

Connor – the time to have had a referendum on Lisbon was BEFORE it was ratified by Gordon Brown, not afterwards. Therefore, blame for this betrayal rests fairly and squarely with Labour (who signed this Treaty into law), not the Tories (who didn’t).

Besides, you obviously think we humble Brits can’t be trusted to express a view on the trifling matter of our own national governance because we are all swayed by “emotion, prejudice, hatred and lies rather than intelligent debate and reason” – which, if I may suggest, has been the classic mindset of the EU elite ever since the original Treaty of Rome in 1957.

I guess that’s probably the reason why Labour never asked us too whether we wanted the country to be flooded by 2.3 million new immigrants since 1997. But there we go – chalk “racist” up on your little list of our national traits as well!

If, as you say, the British public vote according to ‘emotion, prejudice, hatred and lies rather than intelligent debate and reason’, why bother asking them about elected mayors either?
