Dorrans’ chance of Scotland place
Thursday 12th November 2009, 11:27AM GMT.
Albion midfielder Graham Dorrans has been challenged to nail down a permanent Scotland starting place by impressing against Wales.
The young Baggies star is tipped to start against the Welsh on Saturday in the Cardiff friendly, as Scotland boss George Burley wrestles with a mounting injury list.
Burley has urged the in-form Dorrans to push himself forward for a regular place, even when the big names are back in action.
Dorrans made his full Scotland debut in their recent friendly defeat in Japan and maintained his superb Baggies form with a goalscoring contribution to Saturday’s 2-1 win at Leicester.
He said: “I’ll be looking at one or two other players. A player like Graham Dorrans has progressed, did well in Japan, then was excellent for his club on Saturday and scored a goal. So you are looking for him to say ‘Come on, Scott Brown’s out of the way, I’m your man.”
Celtic playmaker Brown is on a Scotland injury list that also includes Steven Whittaker, Kevin Thomson, Craig Gordon and Shaun Maloney.
It will give Dorrans another chance to impress along with Lee Wallace, Derek Riordan and others who impressed in Japan.
Burley insists the players will get another chance on merit.
He said: “It is nothing to do with loyalty. Players have injuries, get knocks, that’s the basic reality. But the lads who did go to Japan gave me a chance to have a good look at them.
“There are places now for Graham, Lee and Derek Riordan. It makes the squad a bit more competitive and there is the risk for some of those players who were injured that they might never get back in.”

If Graham plays on Saturday can I bag his spare shirt, please? I’d put it next to my photo of the crying supporter at the 1982 World Cup game, Scotland versus Brazil.

Jodie, the main reason I always use my name is because I was brought to believe to be born English was an honour and we were fortunate. Things have deteriorated badly in recent years but hiding behind a silly name is surely as low as one can get, especially when pretending to be someone else. “Mom, can I be Clint Eastwood today? Mom tell him, he was him yesterday” Fits does it not? Little things please little minds. I sincerely want the Wulfies to stay up, in fact do well, because the vast majority are good people who love their club passionately, as it should be. When they won the League in 1954 (from us) and we won the Cup, the whole Black Country was agog with pride. The play-off of us against them at Molineux ended 4-4 and was magnificent entertainment, no fighting, no trouble, all mixed together and the players trooping off together as friends at the end. You could touch the electricity in the air. Maybe next year hey?

Cyril I can understand you so much, really I can but I feel it’s more to do with your suroundings, it would be just great if we were all like you and I know you are a really special man your qualities are exceptional but when you work with a load of dingles bangin on evey day about how much better they are than us having to hear what they say about our magical great team it does somewhat turn you so for all the good WWFC fans i will applaud you whoever or wherever you are boing boing

8 Sir Terry.
It’s down to money now isn’t it these days and cars, people can pick and choose who to support. I lived in Smethwick as a kid and everybody by us supported the Albion or the odd one the Villa. It was down to whose ground you could walk to in those days. The lad opposite me supported Villa because he was Irish, I think it was to do with Danny Blanchflower. My dad was a Baggie but my maternal grandad was Villa. Luckily I plumped for the Baggies because although not everyone can see it, being a supporter is about more than winning things.
On the Wolves fans thing, I’m with Cyril. Of course when they’re in the ground they all detest us and I wouldn’t want it any other way. The thing is, on a Saturday afternoon you, me, Cyril and everybody in our ground is the same, we hate the Wolves but I work with a lot of them and they’re cracking blokes.

RBH. Succinctly put old boy. Jodie sweetie, I was really alluding to the way things used to be, there was INTENSE rivalry but respect instead of hate. Hate is such a corrosive emotion. Sir Terry, yes the Villa were our oldest rivals but you do have to go back a long way to remember it and Wolves have superseded it because we have both spent long sessions in Div.2. Then selling them Stevie Bull for 5 bob and a big apple was surely asking for trouble. I, along with my nephew Richard, were mightily impressed with him but our then manager wasn’t. Our whole story of recent years would have been so different had we kept him. The Wulfies might have gone out of existence! That began the raised level of rivalry in my opinion. Steve deserved the adoration he got just as Bob Taylor did with us. Now to change tack…how about Darren Bradley’s goal at The Hawthorns when we won 3-2 ????
