Ring road delays tackled by new lights

Wednesday 11th November 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

A daily headache for motorists in Walsall has been improved thanks to the overhaul of a major traffic light junction, it was claimed today.

Walsall Council says drivers travelling on the ring road at the junction of Stafford Street, Littleton Street and Court Way will now have smoother journeys as a result of the changes to traffic light timings. The alteration comes after motorists complained the lights were out of sequence with other signals, causing tailbacks throughout the day.

Now the sequences have been changed, the council says there should be less congestion at the junction.

Councillor Tom Ansell, Walsall Council cabinet member for transport, said: “As we said all along, we will only see the benefits of the ring road once it is in place.

“This is a major road that is helping to attract millions of pounds of investment and jobs into the borough.

“We are making this tweak to help make the road more efficient.”

The move will see the priorities change at the traffic signal at the junction of Stafford Street, Littleton Street and Court Way.

Spokesman for Walsall Council Daniel Slee said drivers and road users will need to approach the junction with caution as the changes will alter how the different stages of traffic use the junction.

The Express & Star reported in September that drivers were complaining that the lights were clogging up the traffic at the junction outside the new Walsall College on the £23m ring road.

The road, which was delayed by about a year, has seen more than a mile of new road built with more than 12 major new junctions.

Lets hope Walsall council and the highways agency move on from this and point there eyes towards J10 and J7 now.

J7 from Walsall desperately needs traffic lights. It’s actually quicker to cross the motorway then do a U turn and approach the junction from the other side.

J10 in the ideal world needs and over pass for those who simply want to get across the junction onto the black country route.

Bloxwich road could really do with having 2 official lanes rather than the 2 lanes of traffic that motorists tend to make themselves.

The southbound M6 slip road should also be made bit longer so that it reaches the junction. This constantly gets gridlocked as users wanting to get onto the motorway have to wait for those at the traffic lights on the island.

If the council are serious about traffic improvements then these issues need to be addressed.

Traffic flows best when the lights are out of order! People just slow down and there are no hold ups. Thank you.

Seems to me that the traffic lights are sequenced the same at 10pm as they are at 8am,so it takes the same time to get through them when you are the only one on the road as it does in the rush hour, surely they have a computer programme clever enough to hae 2 or even more sets of sequence’s,its a sad thing to admit really but i tend to avoid this fantastic new road if possible, what a waste of money.
