Baggies face a battle to get Best
Wednesday 11th November 2009, 11:29AM GMT.
Coventry are poised to make Albion target Leon Best an improved contract offer as they fight to keep him at the Ricoh Arena.
The Sky Blues are reportedly preparing a last-ditch package designed to head off January interest from a host of clubs including the Baggies.
Best has so far failed to agree an extended stay with Chris Coleman’s side, fuelling speculation that Coventry would be forced to cash in during the January transfer window.
But reports from the city claim the Sky Blues have not given up hope of persuading the Republic of Ireland international to put pen to paper on an extended contract.
However, if Best refuses to sign a new contract in the next six weeks Coventry would almost certainly be forced to sell to avoid him leaving for free when his current deal expires at the end of the season.
And that would alert a host of clubs including Albion, who have kept tabs on the former Southampton trainee since news of the impasse on contract talks was revealed.
He has been talked about at The Hawthorns as a possible January target and head coach Roberto Di Matteo watched him score for the Sky Blues in their 2-1 defeat to Derby last week, although the Italian was primarily present to scout the Rams ahead of their meeting with his team.
Di Matteo remains keen to add additional firepower to his squad with the head coach wary of over-exposing 17-year-old Chris Wood to first-team football while he continues to develop.
Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman has already expressed an interest in signing Albion defender Leon Barnett on a permanent deal if his loan spell goes well.
And that could give the Baggies some additional bargaining power over Best.

Not sure if Best would be good enough should we get promoted, but he would be a good addition to the squad and increase pressure for places. He would certainly help get us promoted.
Would a swap deal with Leon Barnett be an option as I’m pretty sure he is not good enough for the prem.
If/when we do go up we need a forward who is likely to get 15 goals at that level – and thats gonna cost £10M !!

A deal is probably in place for a Barnett/Best swap, with some cash adjustment one way or the other.Depending on who values who at whatever price.

If we’re as keen on Best as reported a swap deal involving Barnett and cash would make us favourites it would seem. I’m with Happy on this one, would certainly improve our promotion bid but question marks over weather he’s prem quality.
Maybe as part of the deal we could send Chris Wood over to Cov on an extended loan?
Shame we don’t still have Pele…what a subs bench line-up that would’ve been…Pele, Best, Moore, Thomas ;-)

2. With terry that we have the best supporters but we are the 3rd best supported team in the midlands but still a step up from Coventry! He is definately not good enough for the premier league but will do a job in the championship has a 1 in 4 record in the championship/league1 so must have other strengths. I cant believe that we are not playing Cech and Mattock gets in the side?

best has scored goals in this league but yet again cox scored goals for swindon and he cnt score alot for us so you can score as many goals as you want in your current team but doesnt mean you will score goals for your new team

Reading another storyline with Graham Dorrans, I hope his head isn’t turned by other players while he is away with the International side. I can imagine TM talking to his Celtic Bhoys & asking them to ‘sound him out’ whilst they are together, we’ve seen this happen before with PL players when they’re on International duty!!

7 Notts.
To add to what Sir Terry says, Celtic have now been blanked from the Prem so there’s no way they could afford him. There’s a few players up the road who will be planning their escape route. Milijas should find the slow pace will suit him.
