Vandals attacked a memorial to those who died fighting for their country just hours after a huge crowd gathered for a Remembrance Sunday service.

It is thought yobs struck overnight at Wednesbury Memorial Gardens, trampling crosses laid by relatives of servicemen who lost their lives in the two World Wars.

The small wooden crosses each bear a poppy and the name of a fallen soldier and were laid out in the shape of a large cross.

Ex-serviceman James Mills, who yesterday laid crosses for his late father also called James Mill, and grandfather Claridge Evans, who both died in the Second World War, visited the garden this morning to discover crosses had been snapped, knocked over and strewn across the grass. Former antiques shopkeeper Mr Mills, aged 67, said: “It is terrible, some people have no respect.”

Wednesbury North ward councillor Bill Archer, aged 82, said: “It is just disgusting. If it had not been for our generation fighting in the war then these vandals wouldn’t even be here today.”

Meanwhile, a crowd gathered to pay respects to the war dead at a West Bromwich war memorial but nobody was there to lead the service following confusion over the date. Up to 20 people gathered at Heath Lane Cemetery yesterday while a Dennis Sanders had also been booked to liberate doves in honour of fallen servicemen.

Inbred idiots with brain cells that do not go into double figures. A stint in borstal would be a good punishment, followed by a letter of apology to all they offended. Then again, they probably can’t write!

It never ceases to amaze me what some people do with the freedoms they have thanks to the sacrifice of others.

They must be ignorant of that sacrifice.

What History exactly do they teach in School now, when kids think Hitlar was a former national football manager and that the Holocaust is a German celebration for the end of the war?

Those that do not know their history are doomed to repeat it:- No wonder the popularity of the BNP is rising!

Had the Nazis succeeded in capturing this country the vermin that behaved like that would have been the first to be rounded up and put out of their misery. It would have been an act of mercy for their tormented minds.

Maz: not all the youngsters of today as you put it have no respect, however the blame does lie at their parents feet. I have three teenage children and I have made sure that they show respect for their elders and that they know what the poppy represents and why we commemorate those who died during the wars. Anyone showing disrespect in this manner should be publicly humiliated and made to see what these brave people suffered and went through. Maybe a stint of army training might do these thugs a world of good but I wouldn’t want them protecting any of our true soldiers as they are nothing but cowards that would probably run off crying at the first sound of gun fire !

This is the price of the UK and certain other countries bowing to votes on European Union directives abolishing all forms of corporal or capital punishment. In Drancy here where I am today in France we have the remainder of the Concentration Camp from where people were sent direct to Auschwitz. There is also a memorial railway wagon.Sorry to say that in spite of CCTV these also get regularly vandalised.35000Euros of damage also recently got done to the CCTV cameras in the same district. Some people have been caught over these incidents.

maz, this is still a minority we’re dealing with. Most youngsters don’t do this else we’d have war memorials desecrated all the time. We don’t know who is responsible but it’s clear that they’ve acted like utter morons and once again, they’ve presented the Midlands in a bad light. I agree they should be caught, and exposed for what they’ve done. It’s disgraceful.
