Stearman targets Wolves wins
Tuesday 10th November 2009, 9:52AM GMT.
Wolves defender Richard Stearman has targeted the wins the player believes the team are capable of to climb the Premier League table.
Mick McCarthy’s side slumped to second from bottom after losing 4-1 to Arsenal at the weekend, when wins for fellow strugglers Hull and Blackburn moved them out of the relegation zone.
One glance at the fixture list suggests it won’t get easier, with a trip to Chelsea next up after the international break, the Premier League leaders having gone five points clear with victory over Manchester United on Sunday.
After the journey to Stamford Bridge, McCarthy’s men have vital home clashes against Birmingham, Bolton and Burnley, the latter two sandwiched in between trips to Tottenham and Manchester United.
Wolves also must improve their points ratio if they are to stay up, with last season’s relegated trio Albion (20th, 11 points), Newcastle (19th, 12 points) and Middlesbrough (eighth, 17 points) all having better records at the same stage of last season.
But Stearman is convinced the team can achieve enough victories to avoid the drop.
He said: “We’re second from bottom, but one win and you jump about five places. We said this week on the training ground how well we’ve done so far, despite how it looks.
“We’ve just got to keep picking up points and a few wins, and the whole table will take on a very different view.”
