Mick: We’ll fight to the end

Monday 9th November 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

STOKE V WOLVES 19 GD 31Defiant Mick McCarthy insists Wolves’ players have the stomach for a survival fight after falling into the relegation zone for the first time this season.

Wolves’ 4-1 home defeat to Arsenal, coupled with wins for Blackburn and Hull at the weekend, dumped McCarthy’s side to second from bottom.

With leaders Chelsea next up after the international break, Wolves’ challenge doesn’t get any easier.

But boss McCarthy backed his shellshocked players, who trailed 3-0 at the break after own goals from Ronald Zubar and Jody Craddock and one from Cesc Fabregas before Andrei Arshavin’s fourth, to respond to the challenge.

“They are fantastic, there is never any doubting of their workrate and their attitude,” said the manager.

“The personality of the team and the fact they give everything for each other will keep us going.

“I’ve got the utmost respect for them because of that, but when we had those chances in that 20-odd minute spell, we have to take them.”

McCarthy claimed nothing was decided by losing to Arsenal, but with tests against with Birmingham and Bolton on the horizon, he stressed Wolves are approaching a batch of games where they need to pick up points.

“Our season won’t be judged by our games against Arsenal,” he said. “Most people would have looked at Arsenal and Chelsea and said we’d get nothing out of them.

“We’ve got Birmingham next (at home) – those are the sort of games we need to win. Let’s go to Chelsea and see what we can do and then see if we can be better against teams in and around us.”

Wolves’ Wales midfielder Dave Edwards admitted Arsenal were the best opposition he had faced.

“I’ve played internationals but Arsenal are by far the best team I’ve ever played against,” he said. “They pass and move the ball so well and I’m sure the Molineux spectators won’t see a better team here all season.”

Proud to be a Wolves fan. Take that attitude into games against most other teams in the Premiership and we WILL win more than we lose. In the end we lost on Saturday to a team that could well finish the season with the Premiership and / or the Champions League. For 25 minutes we had them chasing shadows and committing cynical fouls in an effort to contain us. Still it’s a good job we won’t have to play them every week!

Very commendable Mick, but fight alone will not
keep you up in this league. You need the Players
with sound technical ability to survive, and were not overflowing with those kind of players.Which
was shown on Saturday with the first goal, a corner whipped in at pace, nobody good enough
to deal with it. I bet Lampard,s licking his

I will be honest – I’ve always questioned the quality of MM. I was more than happy to admit I’d got it wrong last season, when at times we were magnificent.
Unfortunately, I still don’t believe that Mick’s got enough in the tactics department to be a truly top manager. On Saturday, we played a 442 with four central defenders and four central midfielders when we had two genuine wide men, and best players from last season, stuck on the bench.
There were too many negative vibes coming from the manager before a ball was even kicked, which flew in the face of what the owner was saying post-season and that, in my opinion, is the reason we are in the bottom three after an apparent ‘easy’ start in the grand scheme of things. In a nutshell, I don’t think we are a bottom three team but, sadly, I’m not 100 per cent covinced the manager isn’t bottom three. That’s not being negative, just realistic.

If we don’t beat Blues, Bolton and Burnley at home then I think we need a new manager in Jan.

I’m sorry, but Mick is a championship manager at best. His premiership record is awful and regardless of the fact we’ve been outclassed by Arsenal, we’ve not beaten the teams around us in our ‘mini league’, hence why we are now second bottom.

I don’t think he’s good enough to manage at this level and if we don’t win our next three games, we will struggle to get out the bottom three, unless someone else comes in with new players and ideas.

I’d be happy with Keegan, Curbs or Coppell at the moment. The results have not been good enough. We have not had a good start to the season, it can’t be dressed up. Only Portsmouth are worse than us and where did they get there only away win…oh yeah Molineux.

I dont want to be negative, because games like Arsenal and Chelsea are meaningless for teams like us.

But, we need a manager who will take bold decisions too and that means playing your best players in their best positions.

Yet again, Karl Henry was very poor in midfield and Castillo was magnificent, so why, Mick, take off Castillo?

Also, our most dangerous player by a long way was Milijas, yet Edwards did absolutely nothing again..

Its ok saying you need holding players in midfield but you wont score without any creativity. Doyle and Blake are getting little to no service at the best of times, so please, dont take Milijas off again!

And drop Henry, make craddock captain and give castillo an extended run!

The albion could learn alot from us not abusing their players and having confrontations with them (Kiely, Robinson, Olsson). Arsneal were unplayable at times and the best team that we will have at the mol this season.

Chelsea we need to put everyone behind the ball and attempt to get a point or put pressure on them for set-pieces. Bolton, Burnley and Blues have to be 7 points.

I admire the lads’ spirit and effort and I’m not gonna start moaning after losing to the best passing side in the league – BUT – they don’t exactly need any help do they? So – MM must start to take a look at Hennessey – when I watched the goals back again on the tv, what on earth was he doing for the first one – nobody near him and he flaps a left hand at a cross that should have just been gathered. And – the punch (flap) for the 4th – most keepers would have caught that, no-one challenged him! Time for change in goal and despite Zubar’s best efforts, I can’t wait for Foley to get back in.

We may have £25mil in the bank but the startegy of not investing in quality (except Doyle) to build on last season is obvious. Whilst we need to watch the £ MM & Moxely lack real ambition and now we have a real fight on our hands.

Why not give the Hoff a run, this was the time to do it when the points were claerly lost?? Sylvan was LAZY and ineffective in the second half, we need to find a partner to Doyle who won’t keep missing the FEW chances we get. Once again MM’s selection and tactics were way off the mark. What is crucial and what concerns me and everyone else is our poor record so far against fellow ‘lower’ teams. These are West Ham, Hull, Blackburn and of course Portsmouth. No one expected that wolves would get anything out of the Arsenal game, they are a class above, and Chelsea, not much hope there…but what concerns me and thousands of Wolves fans is our pathetic performances against the ten other Premiership clube we have already played.

Mr McCarthy, we are playing Sunday league football under your direction…we are playing players that are clearly out of their depth, and yet you come up with a new excuse every week.
Take a good hard look at yourself and tell us what other premiership Manager would consistantly attempt to play out of form players in these games in the hope that they will come good.
For gods sake, Sylvan , it is clear to all by now, is not good enough to be in the Premiership as a striker, despite what he achieved last season.
The same applies to big chris, Kightly in my opinion may never recover his confidence after his string of injuries, Elocobi really should be farmed out on loan, Foley and Edwards are not consistant, Milijas runs hot and cold, and Keogh, while he runs his socks off, is not up to the standard required.

I question the appointment of Kevin Doyle to Wolves. He has great potential, and could in another Premiership team reach the heights he is aiming for, but not with Wolves…no other Wolves player can keep up with his style of play, which has forced him to try everything alone, which is a complete waste of a good player.
What other Premiership manager would pay good money for a player who can throw the ball further than most…Halford is a very ordinary player, and where did you dig up ‘Hough’ and the ‘has been American keeper’
And the junket to Australia during pre Season must have cost many thousands..what did that achieve
Its time Mick to fall on your sword, because the all important game against Birmingham is going to be a disaster for Wolves, they are a much better team of players than us.

It looked disjointed, square pegs in round holes yet again! Wolves have 2 left backs in Hill & Friend, Mick you bought them so play either of them! because Stearman is no way a left back and we will be punished time and time again because of your bizarre team selections. Milljas has got a superb left peg, but play him in his correct postion not out wide who I hasten to add isnt the paciest of players, Edwards is a trier and both Henry & Castillo are similar which leaves you with no one to really threathen their full backs. Up front SEB needs a kick, he is looking like a fish out of water, and he needs to develop an understandng with Doyle, however I would not be surprised if SEB is carrying an injury, he looks so off the paste! All players look confident on the ball, and unforced errors are few & far between. Our fans against Arsenal were magnificent. The support was outstanding through the whole game, with none of the negativity of our promotion season.

…& even Jarvis delivered a pin point cross for Craddock’s goal!

Negatives: Just a very minor point, but we can’t score in open play and are in the relegation zone!

I was disapointed at the amount of individual errors on Saturday.

Zubar was at fault for the first a needless free kick then didn’t see fit to attack the ball when it come over from the corner.

Three out of the back four went missing for the 2nd & they got lucky with the deflection.

Castillo couldn’t be bothered to track back properly for the third & Stearman had gone for a Mr Tikka I presume coz I’ve watched it again 3 or 4 times & still can’t see where he was.

Hennessey & Miljas for the 4th, say no more.

Its hard enough playing against the big boys without handing goals to them on a plate, for 25 mins we were so disaplined it was great, we looked like we might get a result, but then we just collasped.

We need to start playing players in there correct postions & if that means bringing players in from the cold then so be it, we have been poor down the left all season, I think he needs to have a look at Friend & Surman. Stearman is not the answer, its not fair on the lad to play him there, although he did improve us when he come on against Stoke, that just shows how bad big George has been!!!!

Kightly & SEB must play 90 mins against Chelsea just to get them some match time in readiness for the B ham & Bolton games.

Milijas looked slugish all game, but for the same reasons as stated above I’d play him against Chelsea, I’d play him ahead of Castillo who was inaffective in the second half.

We were promised a squad that can compete at this level and that may still materialise. If Zubar, Castillo, Melijas and Doyle can come good over the next quarter of the season and we add much needed firepower and defensive guile in January – we should stay up. It would be criminal not to – as we have the necessary resources to do so and should leave no stone unturned in making it a reality. It is obvious that we are relegation fodder. McCarthy is not a Premiership manager, and his 4 wins in 50 Premiership games as a manager confirms he is out of his depth!
The only consolation is that we are a Premiership team and a class manager may still agree to manage us, but it must be done before the situation becomes impossible.
That means that MM must be sacked before the winter transfer window so that a new manager can be appointed and he can buy the class players we need to get us out of this mess.

I can’t believe that anybody is taking positives from that thrashing! Only an idiot would believe that we got anything from that game.
Chelsea will be even more humiliating, they will see us as an opportunity to improve their goal difference and they’ll go for double figures!
The only hope that we have is to change the management, but Morgan has no taste for that. So, just put up with getting our bottoms spanked and enjoy the visits from Premiership teams, just treat it as a rare excursion into the world of class football, and get ready for the Championship again next year.

50 “this manager in particular has a track record of buying useless players?” – unbelieveable.

I struggle to name many players that MM has bought that were not worth the money and I don’t see there is a much of an argument against that however narrow minded you try to be.

No we are not a strong premiership side and neither are most sides that are promoted to the premiership. As a number of contributors have said wake up and smell the coffee. Wolves have kept the young and hungry motto and created a good atmosphere at the club – one that convinced Kevin Doyle to join. We will have to scrap to preserve our premiership status but that is what we must achieve and then build upon. We are learning but if you can’t see that there is every chance that we can pick up enough points to stay in this division based on performances to date you haven’t been watching Wolves. We are improving game by game – it hurts to be outclassed and I find it hard to accept but I do have faith we can achieve our seasons goal which I don’t recall having during our last campaign in this league (not through the fault of Dave Jones I might add).

    Jesus Christ Almighty!!!

The South Bank Numpties are out, in force, tonight!!

MM came to our club, no money to spend, 12 (that’s TWELVE) first team players and a group of fans living in the past.

We are now a Premiership Team, with a young and hungry (if a little inexperienced) group of players – that’s down to Mick McCarthy – unfortunately he still has a fanbase living in the past.

Do you want to end up like Leeds, Southamton, Charlton, Luton and all the other clubs that have nearly gone out of existance because they have spent more money than they earn?

    We’ve been there…remember?

Hull have been told that if they are relegated, that’s it, administration. Is that what you want for our club? No? Well stop screaming for the Chairman & CEO to spend, spend, spend!!!

The 3M’s are building something special – please give them time.

“Mick: We’ll fight to the end”

When it is obvious at Christmas that it is already the end, then Morgan has to protect his investment and hire a quality manager who is of Premiership quality. McCarthy’s proud record of 4 wins in managing 50 Premiership games explains why we are fighting relegation already.

It is obvious that MM is totally out of his league in the Premiership, so who will replace him?

Having seen how Burnley played Man City and came back from 3-2 down and fight back for a draw, had shown that it does not matter whether it is a big budget or small town team. What matter is courage and determination to face all odds and knowing that they have as much a chance as any team to win irregardless of the opposition.

Whether it is a big four team or any other teams that Wolves meet, the need to fight and having “in your face attitude” is a pre-requisite. Self belief and confidence arises from winning games.

There must be something right that Owen Coyle as a manager had done. To motivate and inculcate, the self-confident, belief and fighting attitude, that Burnley possessed.

Perhaps it is something to consider.

As a team, the current crop can pass it around and do look quite comfortable on the ball. But without a regular goal-scorer that all counts for nothing. If we didnt have Steve Bull all those years ago we would probably still be in the 3rd division.
If we can get the strikers firing on all four cylinders and the team becomes more positive going forward to create chances for them, then we may have a chance of staying in this league.
It just seems at this moment that we are afraid to go forwards.
Unless we can start to hit the back of the net more regularly then we will always play with fear. Goals will bring confidence to the team knowing that if they score we can score back against them.
SEB looks unfit and probably not up to it skillwise anyway. Merlin should see this and try Hoff, Vokes, the youth/reserve team striker — whoever at his disposable. They will not do any worse that SEB at the moment.
It’s goals that win games and we just cannot score – at least from open play.

Blues & Burnley are fighting to the end Mick, Wolves at the moment are bleeding a slow, cold death in this league. Chelsea will thump us, there is no doubts about that, I just hope Wolves can re-group as we have got 2 MUST WIN games at home to Blues & Bolton. Anything less than 6 points from the games against Blues & Bolton will leave Wolves cut adrfit from safety. It will leave us with one burning question. What will the board do in January, will they back the manager to the hilt or will they just think, lets bank the money and accept the parachute payments for another 2 years. I know this is all knee jerk reaction but lets face it people, despite bright performances against everton, villa, man city, we only got 2 points, were realistically we should have beaten everton, should have beaten hull & pompey at home! Thats an extra 6 points we could have had! Anyway no point looking behind, lets get Chelsea out the way and try to win our next 2 homes games which will make & shape ourt season.

Blakey and Doyle do not work together but are two superb players with a big man. ‘The Hoff’ must start against Chelsea as a lone striker but the Blues and Bolton games are vital. Burnleys bubble will burst soon, Hull had a lucky escape on Sunday and Blues, Bolton and most certainly Pompey are in trouble. Pompey have to send back their loan signings in Jan. We will be around 16th-17th at xmas and January we will sign a couple of players, I would like Danny Wellbeck on loan and an offer on Michael Johnson from Man City for some creative flair. Alan Smith or Adam Johnson would be good signings too.

‘awolfatthedoor’ say’s it all for me!!

Most the so called Wolves fans easily forget where we’ve come from of late. I’m only 30 but for me the highlights aren’t the last 13 years or thereabouts of Championship level football, I was only 2 when we won the League Cup, I was 10 when we won in 1988 the ‘Sherpa Van Trophy’ against Burnley 2-0 (Mutch, Dennision), during this time under Graham Turner, the famous signing of Steve Bull & lets not forget Sir Jack Hayward’s massive involvement, we put the recent disappointment behind us & climbed back to the 2nd tier of English Football…
Then it was the turn of Dave Jones who took Wolves into the Premier League via the play-offs when we beat Sheffield United 3-0 in the final.
And since then last year was great under the 3 M’s winning the Championship!!

So thats 2 Cups won, 3 League Titles & 1 Play-Off success out of 5 attempts in my lifetime…
For me we have the most exciting & promising side we’ve had in many a year, sound management & a very healthy football club so again lets get behind our team and show the world that this once great club is on the up again & most of all lets enjoy it…

I’m 27 and Wolves are in the best position we’ve been in, in my living memory. So for that reason I have no complaints despite our current position. Even if we go down, I’m confident that the club is heading in the right direction. Many clubs have been forced to be a “yo-yo club” for a few years before establishing themselves. The likes of Bradford and Hull that have tried to do things in one big step, have ended up worse off.

We may not be able to get new players in in January for various reasons. The players have to be available, they have to accept Championship pay and if we are in the same position or even bottom – who will want to join a sinking ship?
The answer is in a change of Management and coaching staff.
Does Burnley have better players than us? Does Stoke? Or Hull? Our squad is no worse than at least half a dozen teams in the PL.
It’s the leadership that makes the big difference. MM is not cutting it. Let’s change him. It will be easier than trying to bring in quality players.

73_ Mccarthy is a PR dpts nightmare – a walking contradiction if you will, but his press bleatings are not what concerns me.

I really dont think he’s done a bad job given the resources – built a young squad who are performing well – but we are having to punch well above our weight, and it shows.

January transfer will make clear as day the Board’s commitment to us staying in the prem, cos the August close was nothing short of laughable.

As it stands, we DO NOT have enough quality to stay in this division.

My Grandfather and my father are both wolves supporters, I grew up in Canada and ended up supporting Villa because only Premiership games are presented on TV. I would like to point out that after 2 own goals and 2 Arsenal goals Molineux stadium was still full and the crowd got them a goal at the end. I have watched the “you’ll never walk alone” fans at Liverpool head for the doors, but to be 4-1 down and the ground still full was quite emotional.
