Bully Bites with Steve Bull
Thursday 5th November 2009, 4:00PM GMT.
Wolves legend Steve Bull gives it to you straight in his weekly column with a selection poser for the first ‘big four’ clash with Arsenal.
It might not be the most beautiful building in the world but does Stoke’s new stadium rock, or what?
Their fans had whipped themselves up into a frenzy by the time kick-off arrived last Saturday and just as I thought ‘this might be worth a goal start to them,’ they scored.
At 2-0 it felt like Wolves were fighting an unstoppable force and the fact that we were terrible in the first half didn’t make me feel any better, either.
Mick’s half-time team-talk must have been a cracker, because Wolves were bang at it in the second half. We even stopped Stoke’s fans from singing ‘Delilah’ for a while.
If Wolves fans can generate anything like the atmosphere that they did at home to Villa the other week, then Arsenal might well find their Saturday evening an uncomfortable experience. I suppose Saturday might all depend on what kind of Arsenal side turn up.
We’ve all seen those occasional away games on TV where half Arsene Wenger’s team don’t seem to feel bothered to put in a performance.
But I think this fixture could prove to be a very good game of football. Because, under Mick, Wolves are a pretty decent footballing side.
I’m not saying for a second that we can beat Arsenal at their own game, but we can give them a good go. In scoring our goals, I think that set-pieces could prove to be crucial – that was why I was delighted by the second-half performance of Nenad Milijas.
It makes a big difference to a team if you can regularly produce a good delivery from corners. Once he gets used to the pace of English football, Milijas take some stopping.
And I can’t let this week pass without mentioning Jody Craddock and George Elokobi. Some cynics have suggested that Jody has entered a hot streak – at both ends of the pitch – just in time to start discussing a new contract for next season.
But he seems like such a level-headed guy to me that I’m sure he’ll just let the future take care of itself. If he wins Player Of The Year award again, then I’m sure that he’ll be given an extra 12 months.
Whether you’re an attacker or a defender, being in a rich vein of form seems effortless. If you’re out of touch, though, you can give it 100 per cent every week and nothing seems to go for you. I just needed to get a lucky goal and then I was off, but life is more complicated if you’re a left-back.
I wonder if Mick might be tempted to let Elokobi play his way out of his present dip in form rather than putting in Richard Stearman instead. Maybe playing a centre-back out of position against Arsenal might not be a brilliant idea after all.
While I was surprised to see Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s place up-front taken by Chris Iwelumo, the Scotsman did have a pretty good second-half. I just think that it’s a mark of how far the club’s come that the manager presently has these kind of selection headaches.
BULLY BETS FOR THE WEEK: -
Arsenal are flying at the moment, but if Wolves play like they did in the second half at Stoke, they could grab a draw, so I’ll predict a 1-1 at 17/2.
Take a look at the odds on a player scoring any time in the 90 minutes. They’re normally short for strikers, but 10/1 for defenders, so either Christophe Berra or Jody Craddock could be great bets.

I reckon the wolves will get a point tomorrow, boost morale, but the most important thing is we get 7 points from Bolton, Birmingham and Burnley in the home games after this one as taking points off the sides around you is vital. Tony Mowbray rested players my foot against the big clubs, they just got peed on in all games! OHHHH BULLY BULLY, OHHH BULLY BULLY!

Steve Bull er, yeah, you were a legend on the pitch but it is well known that, that is where your “gifts” lay. When it comes to predicting the future Mighty Mick McCarthy is the Oracle.
I’m afraid Bully has a terrible reputation for putting the Mockers on Wolves’ results. As he has predicted 1-1 draw, and after witnessing them demolish Euro opposition mid week … i will be waiting for Mick’s feelings on the game. Mick is like Nostradamous in that his comments need deciphering to get the real meaning.
if he mentions mainly the defenders …We are likely to loose
If he mentions the midfielders mor than other players … We are likely to Draw
If he metions the attackers … We WILL Win
C’mon Mick, Hoff, Doyley, E-banks and Vokesy Please … oh and Keogh?
