Bosses buy up top butchers
Wednesday 4th November 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
A historic chain of butchers with stores across the Black Country has been given a fresh lease of life, saving the jobs of all 200 workers.
The struggling Walter Smith chain went into administration and was then bought out by its management and directors in a so-called “pre-pack” deal meaning all 20 stores have kept open.
And none of the 200 staff have lost their jobs.
The business dates back to the 19th century and has won numerous awards in recent years for its pies, sausages, home-cured bacon and cooked and fresh meats.
Based in Birmingham, it has stores in Wolverhampton’s Mander Centre, Bilston, Brierley Hill, Dudley, Lichfield, Stourbridge, Tamworth, Great Barr and West Bromwich.
All the Walter Smith shops across the region have continued to trade following the restructuring managed by accountants and business advisers PKF.
Matthew Gibson and Brian Hamblin, of PKF’s Manchester and Birmingham offices were appointed joint administrators of Walter Smith (Birmingham) Ltd.
They said: “The company entered into administration to allow a restructuring to take place which will allow the business to go forward and be more competitive in a tough market place.
“The trade and assets were purchased from the administrators by the existing directors and management team.
“The restructuring has secured all 200 jobs. All 20 stores will remain open allowing continued supply to the public and continued custom to suppliers.”
GA Smith opened his first butchers shop in Hospital Street, Birmingham in 1885. Young Walter took it over in 1905 and began to develop the chain which exists today.
Early signs of tough conditions came earlier this year when the group’s award-winning shop in Cannock town centre was closed.

Great to see Walter Smith’s survive. Local butchers can beat multiple retailers hands-down for quality British meat if hung properly. Hope the new team can get more awards for their products from local competitions such as the British Butchery Products competition at Staffs County Showground on Sunday 22 November.

Wonderful news, at last a good news story about a traditional high street shop being saved, it’s quality and choice that matters to those who don’t enjoy supermarket pre-packaged goods. Long live the tradition of our local Butchers and well done Walter Smiths for moving with the times, saving jobs and giving us choice.

These shops will only survive if we use them, and not buy inferior meat from supermarkets.
BUY LOCALLY FROM SMALLER TRADERS!
Cant remember exactly but a pound spent in a local shop benefits the local economy to the tune of £25, a pound spent in a supermarket only benefits the local economy to the tune of £15.

Yes, well said No.3, can’t beat a good British butchers and nice to hear some folk have managed to keep their jobs – just hope it remains the case after the usual busy time for butchers (and turkeys!)over xmas & new year when things can go quiet. Another good butchers is F.Ward at Fighting Cocks, celebrating 50 or even 60 years in business next year. Pop in and say Matt recommended a visit, you may even get a discount!

Totally agree about the need for quality local butchers—– however, what about all the suppliers who may not have been paid when Walter Smiths went into Administration? Can’t believe that any company can close owing money and can legally open straight away with the same directors on board !!!
