Why the Net has the advantage in the ‘Undies world’

A day to remember at the Hawthorns
Tuesday 3rd November 2009, 9:10AM GMT.
Albion blogger Jarrod Hill is still revelling in the glory of Saturday’s five-goal thumping of Watford and believes the Baggies can use this momentum to move forward.
Saturday was such a perfect day. The 5-0 thumping of Watford now makes our worries over our lack of goals in recent weeks laughable.
The fact is it could have been eight or nine such was our dominance, and with both strikers in Luke Moore and Simon Cox getting on the score sheet we all went home with a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
I also went home with an extra £85, after having a fiver on Jonas Olsson to be the first goal scorer!
So what was the difference on Saturday compared to recent weeks?
For one the team selection was different, with Youssouf Mulumbu missing through injury, so Gonzalo Jara and Graham Dorrans played together in the centre of midfield.
I must admit I am a big fan of Mulumbu, but on Saturday’s evidence, the combination of Jara and his defensive shackling of any attacks with his partner’s forward thinking creativity looked a match made in heaven.
Dorrans in particular looked to have limitless energy against Watford, maybe his recent exploits for his country had left him slightly drained in recent weeks. Our attack also gave us another new partnership with Moore being partnered by Simon Cox.
I assumed that Cox would replace Moore, with either Roman Bednar or Chris Wood coming in for young Luke. But the new-look strike force worked well.
Cox displayed the hunger of a player who wants to play and realises his need to impress his new employers. Not only did he work his socks off, he was selfless in possession and played a key part in knitting together our attacks.
Both Moore and Cox took their goals well and maybe it was the work rate and hunger of the former that had such a positive effect on the latter.
The lad has had his fair amount of critics during his Albion career, arguably with much of it justified. His whole demeanour looked more positive on Saturday and I hope he has now realised what the fans demand – total effort if nothing else.
In fact, the whole team looked hungry for goals and so it proved with five different goal scorers appearing on the team sheet. Felipe Teixeira came in from the cold and looked superb. The winger could have been forgiven for looking a bit rusty, but was a constant threat to the Watford defence.
I listened in disbelief after the game when one radio commentator described his performance as poor. His ability to keep possession and beat a player was one of the reasons our strikers were afforded more space than in recent weeks. Sometimes I wonder whether some of these pundits are at the same game.
Another reason we enjoyed more space in the opposing teams half was the fact we managed to score early. It meant Watford couldn’t sit back and soak up pressure like we witnessed against Crystal Palace and Swansea.
I want to go on and mention every single player because they were all superb, Gianni Zuiverloon was back to his best – again I believe having Teixeira in front of him had a positive effect – while Abdoulaye Meite had possibly his best game in an Albion shirt. Joe Mattock also linked well on the left with the marauding Jerome Thomas.
Even goalkeeper and captain Scott Carson with little to do did everything asked of him.
In conclusion I feel the difference on Saturday was hunger, the hunger of players coming in like Cox and Texeira, and the hunger of the whole squad to prove that they are still one of the teams to beat in this division.
A clean sheet, five goals, and a massive shot of confidence, but was our manager happy? Not according to his after match interview, where he basically told us I will be happy when we are promoted.
Well Roberto that’s good enough for me, and if we keep our level of performances as good as it was on Saturday nobody can touch us in this division.

Good summary as ever. Much has been made of RDM`s demeanor after the game. Nobody likes criticism and on the whole I feel he is doing a good job. But like all managers he must be flexible and open to advice, look what happened last season when the world and his wife were telling Mowbray we needed someone in midfield who could tackle. Would he play Dorrans???? Would he hell? Many of us have been calling for Cox and Tex for weeks in a 4-4-2 formation. What happens? 5 goals. Compare that with 4-5-1 at Preston, Coventry and Swansea second half, no goals.

Jarrod forgot to mention that the bet he placed was actually MY “birthday bet” (Jarrod’s words not mine), so I believe it was me who won the £85!!! Fair enough though, he did pick Olsson as first goal scorer, and provided the £5 for the bet, but I’m still claiming the glory! Either way it went towards my birthday celebratory drinks after the game!!

It was a cracking performance, but I hope that we don’t get carried away with this result as a lot of us did after the result against Middlesbrough when it was assumed that we had already won the league.
I have said it before and I will no doubt say it again, this team is good, but it’s still a work in progress and I think we will only really see the best out of this team towards the end of the season when RDM has put his stamp on things, we have important players back from injury and the strength in depth of our squad (in comparison to others around us) comes to the fore.
Very happy with Saturday’s result and performance, but will be much happier if we’re walking away from Leicester with 3 points safely secured on Saturday.

Jarrod – I feel I have to take up your usual position:
One swallow does not a summer make.
Not so long ago we trounced Boro 5 nil and look what happened.
There’s still a lot to do.
Surely this result leaves more questions than answers:
Does Mulumbu get back in the middle?
Where does Brunt go?
Is Cox and Moore better than either of them with Bednar?
What about Morrison and Miller when (if) they’re fit?
Meite?????
We could be in for another month or so of tinkering and tweaking based on these questions and who knows where we’ll be by then??!!!

Good blog but do not get carried away – one 5-0 win does not take away the disappointment of some of the recent results before this.
I must admit however to feeling very guilty when RDM said he was upset about some of the recent criticism – as I was one of the strongest critics of the team and the manager in particular. I just overreacted from the deep, deep disappointment I was feeling after Swansea and Coventry – but I apologise as this is a tough division, there will be ups and downs all the way and it is important we all stay together and back RDM and the team. I commit to stay more level headed and fair in future and the key is not to overreact, to either disappointmnet or victory!!!

Your bang on mate, as regards the questions, i cant wait to have to toy with the idea of having a squad available including Miller, Morrison, Brunt, Thomas, Tex, Dorrans, Mulumbu, Jara,Cox, and Moore.
Sounds good to me!!

Now Twoclate Diyestive Bistiks (as my grandaughter used to call them) are very nice because of the chocolate coating, but there’s still a lot of rather ordinary biscuit to get through. And the dry bits can stick in the throat. So although five 1-0 wins fills you up better, a bit of choc in a 5-0 win is just what the doctor ordered for me anyway. Roberto may well feel he’s had a bad season if we have to do it via the playoffs, but I shall remember the thrill of Middlesbrough and Watford for ages. Surely the reason we go to the match is because we love the uncertainty. How dull to win all the time. How thrilling to knock one over when we don’t expect to. That’s what SPORT is and should be. Hands up everybody who is ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN we shall beat Leicester? Then you must be nuts! That little worm that eats into Jarrod eats into me too. Great Blog mate.

4 – SuperMaths, I just wanted to pick up on one word that you wrote in your post.
Since Meite got back in the team he has been superb. I can only remember him giving the ball away once and making one mistake, when he was knocked off the ball too easily on Saturday in the corner by the Smethwick and East stands and Watford put that chance wide of the post.
For me, a fully fit and determined Abou Meite is a definite asset to our club and his partnership with Olsson could well be the solid foundation in front of Carson we’ve missed for the last 12 months……unless it’s just a good phase and he gets himself injured or hits poor form again all of a sudden?! :-)

2 Laurz.
Am I reading it correctly. Does Jarrod splash out a whole £5 on a bet for your Birthday present?

Will be interesting to see whether Thomas/Tex keep their places at Leicester, or whether Brunt comes back in.
It may just have been that we were already 5-0 up, but I noticed a distinct lack of urgency about our play once Brunt replaced Thomas on Saturday. If we stick with the Moore/Cox partnership for the timebeing then maybe Brunt will have to stay on the bench, but with Bednar in the side (still my first choice forward) then I think Brunt should play to supply the ammunition.

I wasn’t getting at Meite – but I was trying to suggest that he’s become another question for us.
I’m sure most of us had thought that he’d finally had it – indeed by the responses to the Meite article last week it seemed that most of us STILL hoped he’d had it.
And now the performances are coming!
Where does his form leave Barnett, Clem, Jara and the others??
Do we stick with the winning formula or bring Mulumbu back into midfield and drop Jara back next to Olsson?
So many questions!!!!!
12 – I know you weren’t having a go, I was just picking up on the point you made about him.
I think he’s been brilliant since he got back in the team and Martis / Barnett are really gonna struggle to get back in the team with the way that he, Olsson and Jara have been performing.
It’s good to have questions like this though, as opposed to: where are the goals coming from? Who’s gonna play left back etc.
The better the form of the players and the more options we have the better it is for everyone.

I love these Questions.

I agree with virtually all your blog bomber – most crucial factor for me was the early goal. It meant Watford had to try and come at us and not just sit back and it also calmed all the players and fans down.
The one issue that I don’t agree with and I believe I’m very much in the minority here (apart from the WM match reporter) but I didn’t think Tex played that well. I thought we were up against a truely awful watford team on the day and for me Tex wasn’t involved anywhere near enough. For me he still is missing that half a yard of pace since his injury lay off and is too light weight. I’d still have him on the bench as is different to anything else we have – a player that maybe able to unlock a defence late on in a game but certainly not a starter. For me Morrison is the natural Right midfielder once fit – he gives us that bit of zip and urgency that we’ve been lacking in recent weeks (bar saturday)
great win and a better performance however I agree with almost all the posts on here today – we have to kick on from here

Jarrold I think you failed to notice that Watford came and tried themselves to pay an expansive game. This gave our guys the space and time to show their paces. Realistically we are still ill equipped to handle teams like Palace and Swansea and I think RdM’s demeanor after the game reflected this.

I agree with foreveralbion. Yet another reshuffle produced a result which surprised me. Watford didnt even try to close us down and we took full advantage. Sorry to hear the Ellington chanting but it was, of course, completely accurate. Some superb individual performances, Dorrans running like the Koren of old. I have said for some time now that something was up with Koren and I wonder if a move to Celtic could be imminent, I hope not. When we play teams like Swansea we must have the guile (and maybe more experience) to unlock them and get in front. The team is very young (what is av age?) and we must keep encouraging them.
