More double yellow lines near hospital
Monday 2nd November 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
More double yellow lines are set to be introduced around Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital to stop drivers parking around the site for free, it emerged today.
The city council is about to launch a consultation about extending restrictions along part of Wolverhampton Road to “fill in the gaps” between existing lines. It comes after years of complaints from nearby residents about motorists parking up around the hospital in order to avoid the charges levied on those who use the on-site spaces.
Many visitors refuse to pay to park on the 1,800 space hospital grounds because of the costs, chossing instead to park on streets around the site.
Tim Clark, spokesman for Wolverhampton City Council, said: “There is a proposal to put double yellow lines along Wolverhampton Road between its junctions with New Cross Avenue and Graiseley Lane.
“There are already some lines there, but this would fill in the gaps. This would alleviate the problems with vehicles parking on both sides of the road which causes congestion and accidents on what is a busy stretch.
“Before doing this, we need to consult with residents and businesses which we would anticipate doing in the next few weeks once the proposal has been approved by a senior officer.”
Last year the authority considered consulting over whether to have parking meters down Wolverhampton Road, but transport chiefs say it would be better to extend the yellow lines and stop drivers parking there altogether, so it never got off the ground.
Parking at new cross costs £2 for three hours, £3 for three to five hours and £5 for anything above that.
Councillor Milkinder Jaspal, who represents Heath Town, said: “This must be welcomed – when the consultation starts it is important people have their say. When cars park up in Wolverhampton not only is it not fair on those who pay to park on site, it narrows the road and causes congestion.”

I dont think there are enough spaces to park on the hospital car park and think that should also be looked at as part of the reason people park on the roads too….

Well this will make things worse in Okement Drive, we already get hospital traffic, if they cant park on these other streets they will all park in Okement Drive instead!

I have to use sandwell hospital and always park in the surrounding streets/roads. My car is taxed, insured and has a mot so why cant i park it on the roads i pay to drive on?

I never understood why, when we are sick we are forced to pay to park at the hospital. It is ludicrous!!

It doesnt help when hospital staff who have free parking spaces especially the ones who work during the day drive to work and they only live down the road. This would free up quite a few spaces.

so they think yellow lines are going to encourage people to park in the hospital.
Well Wolverhampton council I have news for you it wont.
People are parking there because they refuse to pay the ridiculous price and they still will. It just means they will park further down the road instead.
I know the perfect solution.
STOP CHARGING PEOPLE TO USE THE HOSPITAL CAR PARKS.

There is simply not enough room in the hospital carpark. New cross hospital need to build multistorey carparks on their available land asap. They should have enough revenue by now from their highway robbery.

Something needs to be done, but honestly all this will do is completely knacker up okement drive. its hard enough for residents to park in their own street without hospital traffic. the main drag needs some help, the way people park is stupid.
new cross needs more parking, and it should be free!!!!!! Failing that, why dont they operate a park and ride system. theres enough land by bentley bridge to build a car park and run a shuttle bus round the site. it its affordable safe, secure and reliable people may be persuaded to use it!
buses are also crap, more buses could do with linking up to serve the hospital more reguarly. masking it easier for people other side of city to get there etc.
Main point to those tight wads who are too tight to pay – park sensibly how would you like me to park on our street making it inaccessible?

Agree with most of the comments above. Paying to park on roads you’ve already paid handsomely to use, to visit hospitals you’ve paid your NI contributions to use – it is very sad. You don’t want to be bothered with the hassle of parking a car when you’re in need of a hospital visit or visiting a friend or loved one who’s in there. Haven’t paid a dime to park anywhere (and I mean anywhere) over here in NC since arriving 3 years ago and I never cease to be amazed. How refreshingly mature and understanding; the local authorities here do listen and will act on unpopular issues like this. Wolverhampton Council; listen to the people who put you where you are and stop the continual gouging for every cent you can get….”to stop drivers parking around the site for free” – says it all, really.

Having visited New Cross last year on a trip to England (having to take the parents there) I can only say the money that New Cross are ripping off their patients and visitors (and it is a rip off to go visit a hospital), needs to be spent on cleaning the Hospital – it smells in outpatients, it smells in ER.

You pay your car taxes and have a right to park where you want as long as it’s legal. That goes for everybody. They did this in front of Russels Hall but that was because it was becoming a traffic problem. People still park on double yellows now. It’s the council milking it again and not liking people getting around the system.

We need a combination of the suggestions above:
1. Parking needs to be free or “very” cheap on the hospital site. However, this will lead to more people parking there, and some people are already saying there aren’t enough spaces. So…
2. As someone suggested, we need more parking at New Cross. Multi-storey would be ideal.
The people who live nearby should not have to put up with any consequences of living next to the hospital.
This is a major hospital and should be the pride of Wolverhampton.
