Fans taunts inspired Saddlers players

Monday 2nd November 2009, 10:50AM GMT.

mark hughesWalsall captain Mark Hughes has revealed taunts from Saddlers fans inspired the team to claim a dramatic win at Wycombe.

The skipper struck the equaliser at Adams Park, before Alex Nicholls bagged a late winner to cap an improbable turnaround and win 3-2.

By then, the Saddlers were 2-0 down to the League One’s bottom side at the break on Saturday and were booed off by their supporters, which Hughes reckons it fired up the players.

He said: “You can hear the fans singing we were a load of rubbish. We’re not deaf, we can hear it. It’s not nice and it’s always in the back of your mind.

“They came a long way and we know we couldn’t get any worse, than what we were in the first half and we knew we had to raise it.

“They’ve got to sit there and watch it so everyone has got their own opinion and once we got back into it they got right behind us.”

Hughes knew the half-time inquest from boss Chris Hutchings was expected.

He said: “The gaffer said what he had to say but we’re not soft, we knew what was coming.”

Never was there a stronger case for starting with Nicholls and Jones than on Saturday – the difference between the first and second half was clear to all who went

Fair play to Hutch for swapping things around at half time, but Jones and Nicholls should be starting. I don’t know why he sees Till as a better option, Jones has been quality this season. A player wth real ability.

The taunts are not helped by making a follwoing grumpy by the stupid policy regarding theStourbridge tickets which made it blooming awkward for thsoe who take the time and effort to follwo the Saddlers away from home.

Pete – I’m sure the team would much prefer it if more fans turned up at the Banks’s, so that our club benefits. I’m sure most Walsall season ticket holders who wanted a ticket for Stourbridge managed to get one.
