Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Big four scalp the target for Mick
Monday 2nd November 2009, 11:35AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has insisted the time is right for the team to take the scalp of a ‘big four’ side.
A three-match unbeaten run comes under its fiercest scrutiny yet with Arsenal at home this Saturday tea-time, followed by a trip to Premier League leaders Chelsea.
But McCarthy reckons his battling side can upset the odds and shock one of the established Champions League sides.
He said: “The performances are good. It’s set up for us to turn one of the big ones over. Why can’t we? Why be negative about it?”
McCarthy believes Wolves are due a victory, after Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Stoke made it three successive stalemates.
He said: “We should have won. I’m sick of playing well and just getting a point – we may just as well have won one and lost two.”

Well done Mick. I dont agree about the one win and 2 loss thing, 3 games unbeaten v everton, villa and stoke is good going and breeds confidence a win at everton and 2 losses on the bounce is not better. I would love to turn Arsenal over but a point and beat Blues and Bolton is more important.

I would settle for 2 points out of our next two games, then beat Birmingham.

Good to see Mick going on the offensive… I honestly think that 3 weeks ago if someone had said we’d take 3 points from Stoke, Villa and Everton most of us would probably have taken it… Agree that we do need to turn a draw into a win at some point though, but 3 games unbeaten is a good start…
One thing i will add is that you need to have goalscorers playing to convert chances, i understand big chris playing the weekend, but i’d be supprised if Sylvan does not start this weekend.

SUPER JODY CRADDOCK!!!!!! WHERE WAS EBANKS-BLAKE?????????????????????

Game of two halves. We were average in the first half and great in the second half. Sign up Ledley at half time in Jan please. He is the missing link.

Why not Mick hey? It’s certainly not impossible and yes remaining positive is exactly what you should be doing after recent form. Even though Arsenal hmmmm my god for me they are the best footballing side in the division. UTW

Mick McCarthy, the man, the footballing Genius, Saviour of the Wolves. The only man that could have taken the team, Broken by “Goddle” and turned it in to LEAGUE CHAMPIONS with no significant cash. Has spoken.
We believe, We are Wolves and If Magic, Merlin, Mick the Miracle, says we are ready, then, My Gold n Black friends, we are indeed ready.
bring on them Scalps and let’s hang them high at the gates of the Golden Palace.
For we are the pride of the Black country, We are the cream of the Midlands Crop … WE ARE WOLVES AND WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS.

yep i agree on this one mick, but to do it you have to drop elokobi and play stears or manc and drop kites for keogh who will run at arsenal all day and please please play milijas he,s the only player with the creative play that can open arsenal,s back four from open play or setpieces, but most of all we need to keep the ball against these teams arsenal are a passing team and will pass around us all day to try and tire the players so we have got to do the same?WE ARE WOLVES

The form Arsenal are in? NO CHANCE.
Wolves will do what West Brom tried to do and that’s try and play football against them and get turned over big time. We have no chance.

No. 2 What?
No. We will lose the next two games and beat Birmingham.
Where’s the logic in your statement?

A game of two halves on saturday. Mick learned his lesson after trying to take on Stoke at their own game of hoof and punt. Outpassed them second half and should have won.
Have you Stokies come on for a peep. Lord Effingham Hunt, Wolll and Bring on the Dingles. Your not very good, not as big as Wolves and Stanley Matthews had his best years at Blackpool.
As for knocking over Arsenal or Chelsea, I’d love it but it ain’t gonna happen…on the other hand miracles do happen, Freddie got his first goal of the season on saturday…or was it first goal of the year ? Hello South Bank

I believe that Arsenal and Chelsea are even harder fixtures than playing Man Utd at the moment. We have to be positive but it is likely that we will be in the bottom three over the next few weeks. We must beat Blues and Bolton.
An excellent second half on Saturday. Unfortunately, Elokobi is out of his depth and Kites is struggling. Milijas was an inspired substitution and was superb!

No 4. He had not trained all week until Friday, and I think MM wanted a bit of height in the side as well.

Never mind Gardener etc. Go and get Ledley ASAP. The boy has talent scores goals and is the missing link for us. PLEASE GO GET LEDLEY!!!!

I assume Iwelumu was picked to give some phsyical presence up front alongside Doyle and to help out defencively. If so, not sure that it worked out that well.
If we are going to pose a goalscoring threat we need both Doyle and Ebanks-Blake playing alonside each other.

We’re going to have to be at our best to get anything against Arsenal. Get in their faces and don’t give them any time or space, and we might get something, otherwise it could be a long evening.

As i said three weeks ago. (just before we went to Goodison Park)I’M STAYING POSITIVE.We are starting to get a grip on the Prem, making adjustments and perhaps,……just perhaps lady luck is helping us out a little.
I agree with MM.We can turn over a big club. How about Wolves 1-0 Man U in 2004.Let’s go after the Gunners.
“Staying positive in North Carolona”.

3. Agree – Its all about confidence and application – Arsenal have been turned over plenty of times on the road, we’ve got to get in their faces, not let them play and most importantly take our chances.
I also agree with Micks comments, we need to be more determined and get the wins. The Hull draw especially sticks in my throat.
That said I’d have taken the last three points – could have been alot worse.
What has happened to Mancienne? Would he have got a tackle in against Etherington on Sat that led to their first goal (where Zubar did not). Would have gone for The Hoff if anything over Iwelumo who I don’t think is remotely Premiership quality. However SEB must start alongside Doyler if he is fit against the Gooners. I fancy us to get something out of this one as opposed to Chelsea away but every player has to produce at least a 9/10 rating. Which excludes George and Lumes.
Fight, fight wherever you may be.

O.K. Time for realism!
Another very good result but we had to play that well in the second half because we were shocking in the first!
We still haven’t played any of the big 4…or Tottenham for that matter….and most of those around us have played 2 or 3 of the big guns.
The main difference with the really good clubs is that they play at pace and that may well expose a Wolves side which is generally slow. Hard working….but slow!
The last 3 results have been positive but we are still on a points average that will take us down.
I’m not whingeing. I want us to stay up like we all do but eulogising over 3 draws rather masks the truth…another worrying part of which is that we have only created and scored one goal all season from open play (the second against Fulham) which is not a statistic that supports Mick’s claim that now is a good time to face and beat one of the Big 4!
realisticaly we ain’t got no chance against arsenal or chelsea BUT if we go and give our all that will do.and if we manage to come away with something what a bonus.we need that lucky break
come on you wolves

It’s nice to be able to say we’re 3 games unbeaten in the Premiership & we’re playing well & better with every game, players getting used to the tempo of the top flight & players coming back from injury, improving with every game…
In Arsenal & Chelsea we face the 2 best teams in this league at the moment & poss in Europe right now but why not believe in taking a scalp!!
We beat the mighty Utd at home last time we were up in the Prem…
Just continuing to play well, keeping the confidence and keep improving are are must tho…

Mick, get rid of Elokobi, bring back Mancienne.Get Murray fit and back in goal.Get Campbell in for the rest of the season and we would have a good chance of finishing near the top of the table.Doyle and Iwelumo could just become our Richards and Dougan.Bring on Arsenal and lets get at them they don`t like to be pressurised.Up the Wolves.

How anybody goes to stoke and watch that drivel week in week out must be football brain dead, there was only one side trying to play football, when stoke have the ball it must be off the ground more than on the ground no wonder they,ve got the loudest fans in the premiership they are that bored at the lack of football there,s nothing else to do but have a sing song… UTW

Ray cant fault your optimism but I think we have a way to go before we are solid midtable. I’m not convinced Lumes is up to standard for PL and he’s not getting any younger. I dare say if, sorry WHEN we stay up he may be one of the first to go. Hoping for spirited performances against Aresenal and Chelski but not expecting a rsult in either but convinced we can and will beat BLues and Bolton!!! So if we do drop into bottom three we just have to keep our nerve and come early/mid December I firmly believe will be a good few points clear of the relegation Zone.

Spanish Ray…get back in your box.

We have no chance of picking up anything against them both but as long as we don’t get whipped confidence will stay with the team.
Its very dissapointing we haven’t taken a win from these games and our position is now looking pretty poor when most of our relegation rivals are above us.

no 7 you must be on some thing this is the man who
plays george each week when he has now give away a
goal in last 3 matches when we have 3 full backs
much better than him, also has to make changes at
half time each week, becuase he got it wrong,if he plays george this week
he should be sacked.

The only way we can beat Arsenal is in the air, stoke did it last year with strength and height from throw ins. go 4-5-1 against arsenel to shut the passing down and look at halfords throw into maierihofer for the goal. milijas for the start as well, he’s got a great set piece delivery! 2-1, 3 points on saturday please :)

20. if thats your idea of realism, i’d hate to hear you bieng pessimistic, so your afraid of the big bad 4,eh? lol, remember the mighty wigan uotplaying chelski 3-1, or the mighty hammers uotplaying and nearly beating arsenal only to draw 2-2, and how did spurs get on last week ? oh yea they lost 4-0, man utd lost to burnley 3-1, liverpool lost 3-1 to mighty fulham, my point is this division has always been overhyped and prepare to be shocked when wwfc take at least 4 points from the next 3 games

If we play like we did at Stoke in the first half then Arsenal will kill us off, it wont be 2.0 at half time it will be more like 4.0 I am sure the lads know this. If we play like we did in the second half then we can upset Arsenal and beat them and Wolverhampton would be one very noisy town (sorry City). I agree about George not playing. Every team can be beaten in this league including Arsenal and why can’t it be Wolves that beat them. Come on South Bank, North Bank, Steve Bull and even Billy Wright stands sing your hearts out don’t let the Arsenal fans be heard.

I would like to see the following team:
Hennessey, Zubar, Berra, Craddock, Mancienne, Milijas, Henry, Castilo, Keogh, Doyle, Ebanks-Blake – assuming everyone fit.

i think things are looking ok . i would like to see matt hill back at left back , he may not be as powerful as george but he does nt give the ball away so easily , also i d like to see surman on the left wing , other than that …. CRADDOCK FOR ENGLAND !!!

Forget about the top four – what about the bottom four? We have taken just one point out of 12 from them, and that could prove our downfall come May.

What a joker MM is!! W ehave not the slightest chance of beating Arsenal. We have more passengers than the 79 bus.Arsenal could play a 3rd string team and turn us over.Stop dreaming Mick and get a decent left back and CM….oh, and another striker instead of that Austrian clown and SEB… totally out of his depth at this level
Report abuse
I am just going to take it as it comes on Saturday. On their day Arsenal are a great footballing side to watch, remember last time when they brought the reserves and turned us over,,having said that we are a better side, but anything we get out of the next two games would be an early present from Santa, lets just enjoy watching Premiership football…
Report abuse
i hope your righte mick cause if we dont beat them we will be in the bottom 3 or even bottom 2 or even bottom when we play brum.
We are playing as good as we ever have. Milijas is starting to look the business and Craddock is sheparding the backline quite nicely (though i still think this is our weakest area)
That said, SEB needs to get up to speed and hopefully in time for the gooners, but lets be realistic here, Arsenal on a bad day is a challenge, and they are flying at the minute.
Would love a draw against em, but realistically, we need to be focussing on points against Bolton and Brum.
PS. I hope Mick is looking at boosting the fwd dpt for Jan… having only 1 performing striker is a real risk.
COME ON YOU WOLVES.
The fact remains that our strikers are not scoring sufficient goals.I’m sorry to say but unless Kighly, Doyle and EBanks start finding the net, we will be in the relegation zone before Christmas. If we can get something out of Arsenal and Chelsea, then good luck to them but I can’t see it at the moment unless our strikers start performing.
Up to now we have no idea in the box, cannot break down defences which is not good for staying in the Premiership.
Arsenal do not like it up ‘em – just ask West Ham. We need to play a high tempo, pressing game, making the tackles stick and bring ‘em dowm to our level. With a half decent Ref and 25,000 fans behind the lads we have a chance of taking something away from this game.
Football cliches out of the way…
