Stoke 2 Wolves 2

Saturday 31st October 2009, 5:30PM GMT.

7981946Jody Craddock was Wolves’ hero as the veteran inspired a two-goal comeback against Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, the former Stoke loan defender scored two goals to reward a superb second half fightback from Mick McCarthy’s side and extend their unbeaten run to three games.

Craddock turned home at the far post, after Christophe Berra had flicked on Nenad Milijas’s free kick within a minute of the restart.

Then the defender headed a corner from half-time substitute Milijas over goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen on 64 minutes.

Inspired by their early reply, Wolves were the dominant force for the second half, but it was a different story early on.

The unfortunate George Elokobi gave Stoke a 17th minute lead, when the left-back turned home Matthew Etherington’s cross under pressure from James Beattie at the far post.

But the cross shouldn’t really have been allowed, after Ronald Zubar failed to get a challenge in.

The unmarked Etherington made it 2-0 on 44 minutes, when the winger teed himself up for a volley that ripped into the roof of the net from the edge of the area, after Berra headed away a Rory Delap missile throw.

At that time, Wolves looked dead and buried, but few apart from boss Mick McCarthy and his players would have predicted what was to follow.

Stoke edged a forgettable first half as Wolves – who had Michael Kightly, Dave Edwards and Elokobi booked – found themselves bullied out of the battle at times.

Flowing football was difficult as both teams kept giving the ball away, but Wolves didn’t help themselves by playing far too narrow.

Mick McCarthy’s side should have taken the lead in the 14th minute when Berra missed his header after bursting towards Segundo Castillo’s chip before Stoke’s breakthrough.

In between the goals, Beattie had the best chance of the half when the striker climbed above Elokobi to see his goalbound header clawed away by goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, making his 100th appearance for Wolves.

Booked and with a goal against his name, Elokobi’s unhappy afternoon ended when he was replaced by Richard Stearman on 59 minutes, the latter making his first appearance since September 12 – and first at left-back for the club.

Wolves survived a scare with six minutes to go, when the unmarked Abdoulaye Faye headed over unmarked from Etherington’s corner.

We REALLY have to be more positive from the off if we are going to survive.
Against Stoke today we were dire and deservedly went 2 – 0 down. Who the hell was marking Etherington for his goal?
Second half, two down, so we had a go and could have gone on to win it. But why have we always got to be behind before we have a go.
Burnley have conceeded 3 more goals than us this season but have 5 MORE POINTS.
While I appreciate todays draw, draws WONT keep us in this league.
So MM cut out the negativity and go for it and stop depending on other clubs to keep us up.

Great comeback in 2nd half. We looked dead and buried at half time. Zubar at fault for first goal had plenty of time to take Etherington out before he crossed in. Elekobi could not do much about it.
Sub in of Milajas was genius, as I said before the guy is class and just needs time to come good. Now is family is in the Black Country he will be fine.
Craddock MOM no doubt. 2 goals in 5 years could have had a hat trick. Eating my hat again.
Maierhoffer is looking like a circus act, give him a couple of runs outs to see if we are wrong but if not lets drop him before Christmas.
Iwelumo looked poor (can anyone say Charlton?).
Why wasnt SEB on from the start?
Henry played well couple of dodgy passes but solid. ( I was going to be Karl Henry at Halloween party but went as an Axe murderer instead).
We need a player like Etherington he looked twice as fast as anyone else.

Saw the game yesterday and feared the worst in the first half. But what a change in the second! – we could have won it but a draw was probably a fair result overall.
Of our players, on this showing, the proof is there that Elokobi is not premier league class – unfortunately as he does try hard. With his speed and powerful build no-one should get past him but time and time again over the last few games, he has been our week-link with goals scored that he should have prevented had he stuck to his player.
Yesterday’s own goal is the last straw. Time to rest him i think.
Zubar didn’t have his best game – he should have put in a tackle on Etherington that led to the first goal. He was ok but not as strong as against Villa.
Their second goal should have also been prevented had we marked our players – which we should have been as it was a set-piece. Edwards was the closest player. Etherington’s strike from so far out was a great goal though.
The introduction of Milas in the second half was key to us getting back because finally we had someone who could put in a decent ball from set-pieces and the way Jody took the goals was just magical.
It was a good team effort and we needed a bit of luck – Jody’s first goal was probably off-side – but not before time.
The negatives were Iwolumo who didnt do anything right and doesnt look like he has what it takes in this league. No skill, no energy no speed. And even, Meihoffer looked more mobile than he did. Come back Keough – he may not score but at least he can hold the ball up and keep the play in the opposition half for longer.
I was disappointed in Kightly too- although willing, he kicked too many stray balls which lost us possession and seems too lightweight.
In the week’s ahead, we need to keep the energy levels up and playing it tight. With Milas on set-pieces, we will always have a chance of getting a goal.
And special mention to Henessey – apart one poor punch out – goes from strength to strengh.

The fact that we are unbeaten in three games including two very tough away trips that I believe even top four sides would be happy with a point at Everton and Stoke just look at their home records last season. As MM said we would have been in the same position winning one and losing two but, I think to be unbeaten and get into that mentality is vital, however we do need to start recording some wins, but when I looked at Oct and Nov especially after our dreadful results against Hull and Pompey at home I honestly thought the Blues game represented the first real opportunity to get points back on the board, so I’m pleased that we have battled out some good results and with a bit more steel we maybe should have picked up one or maybe two wins. For a team in a relegation fight which we are and in most peoples eyes still one of the favourites to go down it is vitally important not to go on a losing streak and we have bounced back after out poor performances and now are looking hard to beat far from the soft touch we were last time round, regardless of what the usual morons and Baggies in disguise say, and we do have quality along with it. We are nearing to getting our best XI out and all fully fit, so the 10 points on the board are a testament to the SQUAD we have. it is important to put in a performance against Arsenal regardless of the result as we don’t want to go away on the back of a humiliation and I think we will beat the blues even though their performances have been really improving. I am holding out hope for 3 recruits in Jan including Ledley as the teams around will be strengthening and we must keep pace. There is no denying that if offered this position in the summer we would have all taken it gladly, but we have to start producing the performances we are showing away back at the Mol because it is what we do at home that will keep us up or send us down in the end.

Players left un marked was there second goal- we have to get close and aggressive in the box–Henry-Did someone say he was not good enough ?–Eat your words.

Well done Wolves. In fairness Stoke are a poor team. Most exasperating for me was Kightly’s lack of self belief/bottle. He can talk the talk to the E & S, but he was a passenger on Saturday. Jarvis despite his wayward crossing at least gives the opposition something to worry about. I know Kightly needs more games under his belt, but I’m beginning to wander how long that will take. Milyas & Doyle are the only ones who have the creative nous to carve out openings and have to be automatic choices alongwith Henry. Still some way to go before all the starting 11 are automatic choices. We’re finding our way and have shown we have what it takes to survive, we are gaining in self belief and with half the luck Burnley have had we may even go places.

Stoke is never easy, they are a tough and ugly but usually very effective team – I’m glad to get them out of the way, also had we lost (I live in Stoke) I would not wanted to have gone through the door today!! As for the next two fixtures I feel we have more of a chance of getting something next week against Arsenal at home rather than Chelski away. Great finish from George and I think he is just about finished in this League now, Stearman is a far better player. Always pleased to get a result but the worrying thing for me is the absence of goals from the strikers. When are the so called hotshots Kightly and Doyle going to do the biz on the pitch? Also where is Mick’s “best player on the field” – his words – Keogh these days?

Credit to Mick for changing it at half time – he picked the wrong team in the first half to try and contain and we created nothing and invited them onto us. Did he not learn anything from last year? We cannot defend for 90 minutes and need to go at teams and kill them off, no good trying to keep it tight and win 1-0 at it does not work at this level with guys like Zubar and Elokobi at full back.

Milijas added a different dimension and used the ball well in Stoke’s final third – we need him on the pitch to hurt teams with his vision. No good having Edwards in there putting a shift in as he lacks the final killer ball, he is a better bet to support Henry sitting in front of the back 4.

We need to go at Arsenal and push them back, not invite them on. Mancienne and Stearman in at full back, Milijas/Edwards/Henry/Kightly across the middle and Big Chris up front again with Doyle to bully them. The special team of Halford and The Hoff to come on in the final quarter to finish them off.

Excellent come back, great character which is most impressive aspect of this side however its going to be tough to come back from 2 – 0 down against the better sides no disrespect too Stoke. A point away from home in this league is always good but again we can’t expect too stay up if we don’t win our winnable home games, i.e. Birmingham and Bolton after Arsenal and Chelsea games.

Credit too Mick for making the change at half time with Milijas making the difference and super Jody Craddock if he keeps this up he’ll be getting a new deal sooner than later. We did have some major luck for once in the first goal, it was offside but as Mick was saying after the game, it’s about time we had some decisions come our way.

Well done to the lads for their second half display, suggested changes would surely be Milijias starting for the next game and although I like big George but that own goal must be the final straw for the time being at least, Mancienne or Stearman at left back or could Zubar switch and allow Foley a return to the side?

Well done Mick and the lads.
IMO a very good point against a side who are difficult to play against at home.

To all you Stoke fans, YES Jody’s first goal WAS offside but whether you like it or not that is the slice of luck we have more than earned through other matches this season.

Some of the officials decisions of late have been very poor usually costing us points I felt we had earned so as big Mick said it is about time one went our way and someone else can complain about it instead.

The match report write ups however are sometimes a little off the mark. Etherington did NOT “outstrip” Zubar as I have read somewhere (can’t remember where that was) they were toe to toe, if Zubar had got a challenge in it would not have been a problem but I am not going to berate him as he had a decent match overall. I do however worry about big George AND our marking at set pieces, better teams will take more advantage than Stoke did.

As for Jody WHAT A PERFORMANCE. 2 well taken goals and strong in defence along with Berra. Hennessey again had a decent match and made some very good saves, he’s improving all the time at this level and I’m delighted he is now showing himself to be the great keeper he is in this league.

Milijas was SO much better with his set piece deliveries for this one and I would be tempted to play him against the Gooners along with SEB back up front with Doyle in place of big Chris and restore Keogh to the subs bench.

I am an admirerer of MM and always have been but surely he can see that when we come up against the next two teams we will be shredded if old George is in there. He needs to shed some of the muscle and maybe he will speed up a little. Also Milijas is probably the only player who can put a decent free kick in and yet again he is on the bench. If we lose to Arsenal next week – and, let’s face it, we could play really well and still lose, then we could easily drop to 19th. Whatever the score between Blackburn-Portsmouth one of the two go above us. West Ham have two home games Villa and Everton to achieve three points and it is possible that Hull will beat Stoke at home.

Pleased to see Henry still making me eat my words – he is doing well, much better than I ever expected. The same can be said for Berra.
Iwelumo is another one that will not cut it in the PL, I know fans love Big Chris, and he is only just coming back from injury, but he will never get to double figures for goals and like Carl Cort, he SHRINKS when going for headers – for a big guy he should be more competitive in the air!

i have read many of the comments above and onli a few state that milijas is a quality player and should be played
why can no1 see that milijas is pure class and deserves a first team place in our team !
he set up 1 of the goals and his free kick created the other…

I’ve just been on “The Oatcake” to see a few of the pre and post match postings.

You have to wonder sometimes if they think this is still the side from 2003, predictions ranged from 6-1 to 2-1 to Stoke. No one predicted a possible draw.

We are not the same team they beat 4-2 at the Mol before promotion to the prem, albeit courtesy of a game turning pen for us that wasn’t given.

I think it’s fair to say they know what sort of team we are now, we never give up.

To be fair most of their posts were very self critical and only a few actually gave us the credit we deserved for our 2nd half performance. Nice to know they aren’t all instilled with the belief they can just beat anyone who plays Stoke “Real Madrid” City at home.

So I think we should be proud to upset most of their “we’ll thrash you dingle scum” (their words not mine) type fans, the arrogance of some fans is unbelievable sometimes with little or no respect for the opposition regardless of whether they give their team a game.

That was the type of match the phrase “A game of 2 halves” was coined for.

    COME ON YOU WOLVES

56, 57 Terry. 20th place last season and championship now, didnt stoke get 6 points off you?

I would bring in Stearman or Mancienne for big george on sat. Unbeaten in 3 games now fellas, and I fancy a point off the gooners, we will lose at chelsea and beat blues and bolton. We may temporarily go into the bottom 3 for the first time but come may we will be 16th. Only man utd and cheksea got points at stoke so far that is an incredible result. Kites is suffering from the narrow pitch where his pace is less effective. I would play Milijas in place of kites and edwards on the left to help the full back out.

Can we archieve the impossible and get a result against arsenal & chelsea. We the month of november the purists will see our fixtures and predict 3 defeats but does anyone think Wolves play better if we are classed as underdogs? Lets face it we were favourites to beat hull & pompey and we did neither and underdogs gmaes against villa & everton we got 2 unexpected points. My feeling is play without fear and who knows! But wolves must drop Big George. He has a big heart but its a step too far for him at the moment. I think his body language is not positive and teams see him as a weak link.

Well done to come back for a draw, good team effort.
Saw some great games against Arsenal in 50′s / 60′s. We will need to be at our best from the kick off and put out a side with maximum pace. especially in defence so Mancienne and Stearman have to start. Also start with Milijas as I think he will rise to the occassion.
Jody inspirational, we will need your influence on Saturday.
However it goes lets give the team the full Molineux vocal support from start to finish

I think we will get from the following fixtures:

    Arsenal – 1 point
    Chelsea – 0 points
    Blues – 3 points
    bolton – 3 points

Hull have kept Brown on which is great news for us, Pompey had to borrow 15mil just to pay the players and are widely tipped to go to into administaration and Burnleys bubble will burst, Bolton are shocking, Blues cant score. WE ARE WOLVES

Jody awesome, in this form there is no stopping him. We will need him to steady the ship on Saturday. Agree that Milijas is due for a start, we will need his vision to make most of our chances. Maybe Keogh could do a job. Time to give big George a break, he gives his all, great attitude and character. He has improved lots since his arrival from Colchester but still more improvement needed for this level. With his determination I would not rule him out for the future
Lets make sure we play our part by giving Arsenal the traditional Molineux by being the 12th man on Saturday

we have lots of ok players but in 53 years watching
wolves i have never seen a team where no one can shot do not thinks we more than 4 shots in the last 2 games and for marking at free kicks corners
we are terrible, and mm when will he pick best
team having to change at half time every week.
    just no good.

Just some food for thought :

    1) Milijas – performed well, but the pressure was off when he came on. Haven’t Henry, Castillo and Edwards given us the midfield anchor to at least be in with a shout against teams recently? Im not saying he shouldn’t start, but the outcome hasn’t always been great when he has, so lets not expect too much if he does start against the gooners.

    2) Elokobi – May be time for a rest, but weren’t there a load of you crying for him to come in for Ward earlier this season, when, arguably, Ward looked a million times better than George does now ????

    3) Kightly – The guy is clearly getting back to full fitness. Why the agression towards him ? Lets let him get 5 games under his belt before we right off, potentially, one of our most creative players.

    66 I agree with your point 3.
kights is coming back from injury and finding his feet at this level. He is class and has pace and can turn.
His attempt early on at Stoke was class although the strike was not very pure his movement to set it up was great.
he was the one who got us the penalty against Villa with a great turn in a crowded box.
    Give him a chance
Agree, sadly about Big George. Not good enough at this level
    SEB also needs to start
