Albion 5 Watford 0

Saturday 31st October 2009, 5:17PM GMT.

7982291Five-star Albion ended their goal drought in style as the Baggies gave Watford a Halloween nightmare at the Hawthorns.

A Jonas Olsson header and a Graham Dorrans penalty gave the Baggies a 2-0 half-time lead with Luke Moore, Gianni Zuiverloon and Simon Cox were all on target in the second-half.

Albion flew out of the blocks and led 2-0 after an impressive opening 17 minutes.

It took just five minutes for the opening goal to arrive, as Joe Mattock was fouled by Lee Hobson and Graham Dorrans’ resulting free-kick was headed in at the far post by Olsson.

The Baggies doubled their lead 12 minutes later when Luke Moore raced onto a high ball by Olsson and was clipped by Adrian Mariappa, sending him to ground.

Dorrans stepped up and smashed the spot-kick past a helpless Scott Loach in the Watford goal.

Moore thought he had another penalty just after the half-hour, when the striker went down under Loach’s challenge but the Albion man was yellow-carded for diving.

But Albion did become ragged for a spell just before half-time and were lucky to escape seven minutes before the interval, when Craig Cathcart flicked on a corner and Mariappa headed over.

But the Baggies held firm until half-time and then ran riot in the second period.

The home side survived a scare when Danny Graham put a good chance wide for Watford and Cox headed over for the Baggies, when the striker should have hit the target.

But the third goal arrived on 49 minutes when Moore saw his first shot saved by Loach, but recovered to bend a follow-up into the bottom corner.

Moore had another shot blocked by Loach before Gianni Zuiverloon made it 4-0, skipping across the area before drilling a low shot past Loach.

Cox capped an impressive performance with a goal of his own, collecting a knock-down from Moore and hammering a 20-yard shot over the outstretched hand of Loach.

Oh ye of little faith. I thought Cox did well against stiff opposistion. Shame he was pulled off but he was tiring and looked a little limp towards the end.

Tolja day I ? They wouldn’t dare lose because they’d have spoilt my birthday. Some son-of-a-silly-person said Tex didn’t play well. He was magical at times and that body swerve ought to bottled and sold in Boots The Chemists! Cox played a great part too. Moore showed what he does on the traing ground today. Now keep it up young man and you’ll go from zero to hero in no time at all. I was happy with Cox as M.o’M. mainly because it could have been almost anyone. There wasn’t a weakness anywhere. Dorrans was awesome, Olsson and Meaty Meite solid as a rock. Our sometimes maligned young fullbacks didn’t put a foot wrong. Carson looked unbeatable. If I’ve missed anyone out, sorry. I’ve had two bottles of cognac bought me…..Happy Birthday to me, etc……Trick or Treat girls ?????

    Goal crisis…. what crisis???

Very good performance, with Luke Moore and Simon Cox very good up front. Movement, Pace, Workrate and two very good goals from two very young forwards.

They say don’t change a winning side, however, I think Roberto will play Roman up front with Chris and Marek coming into midfield.

Just finally, well done Abou Meite, another very good performance.

Luke and Simon, keep that up and you won’t be fa away.

Now the team have found their scoring boots again we will start to put some distance between us and the other teams, it might not be straight away as we have some hard games coming up but over the coming weeks and months we will do it.

The funny thing is, we had almost as much possession at Coventry and one goal there would have been enough, but would probably have generated more. That’s why Roberto isn’t too happy. The criticism was not truly justified. Somebody must tell him what’s said on here too, besides Jonas having a good go. If young Cox does what he did yesterday, he’ll do fine. He’s not a big lad but he gets in good positions and worries defenders. And he’s got quick feet, that’s a huge asset. It’s worrying that RDM appeared so subdued after a thumping victory. He’s quite right , no team is going to walk away with this league , two of Albion’s rivals Cardiff and Forest put on a very good show yesterday and showed just how fierce the competition is in the Championship. The reason that we were so good this week is that the players had no midweek game last week and had a complete week to train and rest. There are so many midweek games plus international duties that it is no wonder that they look jaded at times. The last thing we need is for RDM to become unsettled by fans overeacting to the occasional below par performance which are inevitable in this league.

We took our chances on Saturday.

Cox was like perpetual motion personified on Saturday and was very impressive.

The difference was that we scored early, so Watford couldn’t just sit there and hope to sneak it 1 – 0 and we took our chances.

With players coming back from injury, I hope that this is the start of another lengthy unbeaten run and when you look at the bench on Saturday it looked VERY strong.

Kiely, Martis, Koren, Wood, Bednar, Brunt and Cech are all international players and would walk into 90% of teams in the Championship.

After watching RDM’s interview on the TV, my missus asked why he was so negative after winning so well. Quite obvious I thought, he wants money for a loan striker and/or a new striker in January. He’s hardly got a compelling argument after thrashing Watford 5-0 now has he?

We can only beat who is put infront of us and we did convincingly but lets be honest that is the worst team I have seen at the Hawthrons in many years, Watford were absolutely awful. A real test is the Leicester game if we get 3 points there then we can start to dream but with our inconsistency we never know! Cox worked his socks off and scored a great goal.

What a win! Glad the strikers finally found the net, hope they can kick on now.

As for Watford being really poor, are we sure it wasn’t just Albion being so brilliant?? At least they had a go, even at 4 & 5-0 they kept havin a pop. They didnt just roll over & die like a lot of teams would.

The only slight criticism was RDM’s interview after. He seemed unhappy & quite negative after such a result. I can understand he may be frustrated with the recent critics and he is probably right in saying they over-reacted but he looked dispondant! Please dont take it to heart Robby. Its just the pressure that comes with a relegated team that wants promotion.
We understand u need time and are still gaining experience but we have faith in you.

Also wasn’t quite sure on the “would rather win five games 1-0, than one game 5-0″

Yeah but wouldn’t u rather win five games 5-0??
Okay so ur not gonna win 5-0 every week but lets say scoring 2,3 or 4 goals in those five games is sureley better?

We dont wanna go up Stoke’s boaring way of winning 1-0 all the time. Whilst theres nothing wrong that, and I dont mind the odd
1-0…. especially if u need to grind it out.

But winning 1-0 wont give u the same boost a 4 or 5-0 thrashing of someone will! Those players should be on a high now and well up for the next game. Especially the lad Cox.
And I was glad to see the strikers contribute.
    More of the same please

I know that even if we put 5 past Leicester next week you would find some stupid reason why it wasn’t a good result – give it up !!!

Why not stay on your own page an celebrate not winning another game….

Great to see some of the forwards enjoy a confidence building performance – and with Brunt & Cech on the bench we are looking very strong. Watford came to us unbeated in their last 6 away games – and we destroyed them….. just need Sheff Utd to do us a favour tonight.

The manager wasnt getting carried away either because it was a good performance against a poor side. Leciester would be a great win but I would be over the moon with a draw. A warehouse was a ‘weruss’ (unless the boss asked, then it was the ‘werussouse’. Yow gorra be posh with the boss. U cant have a moron, Or a dingle, Or both

Its either just a moron Or a moron dingle :)

U are starting to convince me baggiebob is the above, I was quite suprised at his negative comment after a great weekend, we all know how Stoke have had the upperhand over us the last few years and are still in the premiership.

But I know for a fact and I have heard many fans say this
That I would rather watch our style of football in the championship than watch Stoke’s boaring, ugly, unskilful, dross they play every week in the premiership.

And I suppose they deserve their respect and are going well in their 2nd season. But mark my words, their time will come…. maybe not this season but they will come back down again.

Baggiebobs just probably annoyed cuz I bigged up Stoke over the dingles this weekend as much as it hurt to praise Stoke it was worth it to wind the Wolfies up. Now he’s just probably trying to do the same thing.
