Wolves bigger than Stoke – Henry
Friday 30th October 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Wolves captain Karl Henry returns to Stoke insisting he joined a “bigger and better club” by moving to Molineux.
Three years on from arriving at Molineux on trial, the 26-year-old locks horns with the Potters for the first time tomorrow in the Premier League with his profile never higher.
Man of the Match in the live televised draw against Villa last weekend, the former England under-21 international was tipped for possible full international honours by team-mate Michael Kightly this week.
It’s a far cry from 2006 when he arrived at the club, boots under his arm, for a try-out against Villa before signing for a bargain £100,000. Not surprisingly, the Wolverhampton-born midfielder returns to the Britannia Stadium with no regrets.
Henry also feels Wolves represent a better long-term bet than Stoke, despite boss Tony Pulis currently having more clout in the transfer market, with £10m of talent in two likely substitutes tomorrow in Tuncay and Dave Kitson.
But Henry said: “I feel I’ve moved to a bigger club, a better club and I’m completely happy. I feel I’ve developed massively at Wolves.
“I think you grow as a player playing week in, week out and getting the confidence I’ve got from the manager gives you so much self-belief that you can’t fail to grow as a player.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and I’ve learned a lot from playing regularly.”
Henry is also convinced he has banished Stoke boss Tony Pulis’ opinion that he lacked a winning mentality.
The midfielder said: “I remember Tony Pulis referring to me as a nice passer but maybe lacking a winning mentality. I feel I’ve certainly got that now and I can thank Mick McCarthy for instilling that in me.”
Henry believes he will receive an indifferent response after admitting leaving the Potteries as potential unfulfilled.
He said: “I’m probably going to get a fairly impartial reception.”

I dont think there is any doubt Wolves are a bigger club. Down here in Hertfordshire there are dozens of other Wolves fans around. The trains are packed full of us from London on matchdays. Cant say ive ever seen a Stoke shirt around here.

“Man of the Match in the live televised draw against Villa last weekend”
Ridiculous. How many hatricks as he scored this season?
must admit, thought he would struggle the most out of our midfielders, but i stand corrected. well done mate. England honours are maybe a bit ott!! by far the best midfielder we have at the moment. liking the henry/castillo partnership…looks good, solid and defensive, kights and jarvo to do the attacking, and milijas to come on if extra needed.
BRING ON THE POTTERS!!

Hopefully you’ll put in another man of the match performance tomorrow Karl. We’ll need something as this will be a hard battle. I’m looking forward to this more than the Villa game! UTW

Nice one Karl….wind ‘em up.
History proves beyond doubt we are a much bigger club, but, we are talking NOW.
Stoke deserve to be bracketed in the middle section of the Premiership after their exploits last season, their transfer dealings in the summer and what they are achieving so far this term.
No doubt about it, we will be punching above our weight to get points at the Brittania.
That’s not to suggest we are not capable of doing to them what they did to ‘arry’s boys last week.
After breaking his duck with a pen against the Villa, this Stoke defence, without Huth, is tailor made for SEB to push onwards and upwards.

Now Stoke don’t burn your fingers burning your old Karl Henry shirts & signed photo’s.

Whether we are a bigger club or not (Clearly we are) is of no consequence at the moment, they survived and in fact thrived last season and look like repeating that feat or better this season and clearly they have more spending power than us at this point, would have loved us to have signed Tuncay. What matters is getting a result against a very tough, very competitive side who are steadliy becoming a proven Prem team which is where we want to be. If we can match Stoke FC endevour and achievements over the next couple of seasons our ‘Big Club’ status will no doubt begin to come in to play and then move us above and beyond where a Stoke or Wigan could go (without a middle eastern Sugar Daddy), I mean that with no disrespect. My head says we will struggle to come away with anything, my heart says 2-1 the Wolves. Lets just hope MM doesn’t play into their hands and go like for like, toe to toe because what they do they do very well much like Bolton under Allardyce.
I’m glad everyone else thinks that aswell. Stoke can’t be mentioned in the same breath as Wolves. They’re doing okay at the minute, but Wolves are still under-achieving for where they should be.
Wolves = Pioneers of European football, with a rich and illustrious history. Potential to be one of the top 7/8 clubs in the country again.
Stoke = A club who are doing alright, and whose fans should be very happy with where they’re at right now. They are rightly proud of their club, but will never be as big as Wolves.
i think everybody who knows anything about football would know wolves are a much bigger club than stoke ,for a start they have never won anything major unlike wolves infact i would say they are pretty similar to the baggies for there football achievments and there status ,average.

Lawro’s prediction from BBC site, incidently he had us to beat the Vile 2-1, last week.
Stoke v Wolves
Stoke have quality in all the right areas at home and Wolves will have problems dealing with their physicality.
Wolves worked very hard last week (to draw with Aston Villa) but they are just lacking a bit of guile and quality.
Verdict: 2-1

Size is not important, ask the wife! Equally size does not mean that you will do well, look at Newcastle, Leeds, Forest, Sheff Utd, Sheff Weds, even Bristol City (although the size of Bristol City could be the invitation for a number of jokes!! lol). I find it a strange phenomenom that people are still hankering for playground arguements, my dad’s bigger than your dad and all that rubbish. Who cares? What matters is the results, and this Saturday and the end of the season will tell. Big club? Little club? All a load of macho bravado usually brought about by insecurity. However, good luck for the season, I hope you stay up and maybe a bigger club than yourselves might go down! (From a southern Potter, who wears his shirt a lot!!)

Very interesting reading a few of these comments.Wolves do have a decent football history but what I don’t understand is quite a few Wolves fans are certain for a Away win.Has for the stadium no comment.
Stoke last season only lost versus Everton,Chelsea,Man Utd and West Ham that is 4 defeats in 19 Home games. This season they have only lost 2 up to yet against Chelsea and Manchester Utd plus an interesting fact out of the 10 games this season only Liverpool have scored more than 2 goals when they hit 4 past Stoke at the start of the season.
Wolves have only 1 win away out of 5 matches with defeats at Blackburn,Manchester City,Sunderland with a draw at Everton.
My honest prediction –
1 – 1
Fuller ( Stoke ) – Kightly ( Wolves )

Are some of you Yam Yams completely ignorant or what? “no doubt we’re a bigger club”, “stoke fans should be very happy with where they are, we should be top 7/8″ Are you forgetting that Stoke are the second oldest team in the football league? Founding members of the football league? Owners of such players as Matthews, Banks, Greenhoff, Hudson, Shilton etc etc. We are not just a small time average club and you havn’t got the god given right to be in the champions league like you seem to think.

28, you are spot on, as I said my head tells me we will struggle to get anything out of the game, they have turned that place into a fortress there is no denying it, a win there would be SOME achievement make no mistake, but I would take a draw right now. 20 spot on and as i said the Big club ”debate” (use that term very loosely) is pointless, it doesn’t win matches and that is what is important, Stoke are winning matches and on merit are looking like a very solid mid table Prem team which is a great achievement. At the risk of repeating myself that should be our aim but we must achieve it in our own way, then and only then might our ”Big Club” status be even worth a mention as it might help us kick on into the upper tier of this league. At present though make no bones about it we are in a fight for our PL survival which I believe we will win but its in by no means a sure thing, and Stoke are certainly looking in the oppostie direction in the league to us right now. I’m getting bored of posting ”Do your talking on the pitch boys!!!”

Nice to see Staffordshire Cities doing well compared with the Brummie suburbs. Our history says top six club our results, well…. Stoke will always be mid-Prem and feel they have out-boxed but until Wolves get into that top six they will never be satisfied, that’s the difference.

whether wolves are a bigger club than stoke or not “tomorrow is when in counts” and not when wolves were truley one of the great football clubs in english history, yes we will once again rise to where we once were but for the meantime we have to live in the now and will have to scrap like it might be our last meal every game and stoke will be no exception…
anyway good luck wolves we will need it…

It doesn’t really matter who is the ‘bigger’ club. Who has the 3 points on Saturday night is what matters.
Stoke are a good side and will be difficult to beat. We have played ok in the last 2 games and deserved more than the 2 points from the Everton and Vile games.
If we play like we did away at Everton we will get at least a draw. Blake and Kites have a couple more games under their belts, Castillo is back, BCI back on the bench. We are starting to get a decent 11 players on the pitch and we can certainly beat Stoke.
2-1 to the good guys, captain Karl to bag the winner ;-)

I’m looking forward to the banter tomorrow in the south stand and to an easy 3 points and hope to see you again in a couple of years when you come back up (no doubt spouting the normal “we’re a massive club with massive potential”)

Oh dear …. My clubs bigger than yours debate, some of you Wolves fans should be a little more humble, especially as your recent history is barely better than ours. If you add the factor of the millions of wasted pounds pumped into the club over the past couple of decades , we’ve probably performed better with little or no funds.
As Stoke fans, we know know that our team aren’t world beaters, or boast superiority over rivals. But what I do know, is not many teams visit our Lego stadium and come away with much other than bruised bodies and egos.
I genuinely hope you stay up, Wolves are a decent club with some decent fans (I happen to know a few), but I think bragging rights should be saved for ‘if and when’ you stay up. Good luck after tomorrow and look forward to our visit to the custard bowl :0)

Good support in the last 10-15 years, what about the 10-15 years before that? Mid-late 80′s? Wolves are a well supported club with a credible and proud history, but historically (and your statistics will back this up), fan-base wise, no bigger than Derby, Leicester, Forest, the Baggies, Stoke, the list goes on. Living in the past is a dangerous thing – in the last 20 years we’ve both managed 1 season in the top flight – shall we count the relegations? Winning cups 60 years ago is all well and good but looking at recent history I believe both sides are of a similar size in terms of fanbase and stadiums!

Go on Karl la! Talk is cheap though so make sure you show them how good you are on the pitch today. At the moment I would argue that we are about equal in stature as a club with Stoke, but I think the difference is that what Stoke are achieving now is probably the limit of that club’s realistic ambitions, wheras while Wolves would be happy to emulate Stoke and become secure in the Premiership, our longer term ambition is for consolidation first, then expansion of the stadium, then cup success and European football. We have the history and the potential, Stoke do not. They do have passion though. If wolves can match their passion we can achieve greatness and for that reason they can be an example to us.
My gold and black heart believes Wolves will win today. It always does. How about a two nil wolves win with two scrappy set piece goals by Iwelumo and Ebanks Blake from long Halford throws? Lets give them some of their own medicine.

What a thing 2 say before the game. And I really do fancy Stoke for this one. So he will probably be eating his words.
Truth is, wolves probably are the bigger club history, support wise etc etc than stoke. But that winning mentality he says has now been instilled has also come with the typical:
“Wolves are such a big club because of a few cups we won 50 years ago” mentality that runs throughout the whole club itself.
Its an arrogance thats obviously not only with boardroom, staff and fans but also transfers to the players as well. Which club is bigger means nothing these days its money, and premiership establishment means everything something Stoke have over Wolves at the moment and come full time… my bet is they will hold 3 points over them as well.
Why say something like that a day before the game??
