Up and downs of life at the Villa

7969802Villa blogger Dave Bytheway still feels lucky to have escaped Molineux with a point but has been struck down by League Cup fever ahead of the trip to Everton.

Well that was a little bit of a let down last Saturday wasn’t it?

I know I said in my blog last week that I would have been happy with a point against Wolves, and looking back on the game now I am actually a bit more pleased than I though I would be.

But in my opinion we didn’t even turn up for the game. When Gabby Agbonlahor missed that sitter in the first few minutes it made me worry straight away. We showed none of the passion and strength we showed against Chelsea the previous week, and did nothing to attack the Wolves who should really have been there for the taking.

I have to admit that when Richard Dunne pulled back Kevin Doyle it looked like a foul, and there are no complaints whatsoever with regards to the stupid tackle Steve Sidwell made in our box on a guy going away from goal to give them their equalising penalty.

All game we failed to have any end product. There was no initiative and nobody seemed willing to try and step up a gear to make something happen. Credit has to be given to Wolves – they battled for every ball, like they actually wanted to play football and win a game.

These things happen though, so to come away avoiding defeat is a good point for us, as to pick up anything when playing badly is a thing that the top six simply have to do.

It was a good day in the city for me, drinking pre and post game with Wolves and Villa fans together made it special. There was no anymosity between anyone and the friendly banter was flying around all day. It’s just a shame every game can’t be like this!

We went to Sunderland on Tuesday in the Carling Cup and there can only be two words said about the game – Brad Guzan. The young American goalkeeper is getting stronger all the time and it can’t be long before he is challenging Brad Friedel’s uninterrupted 200 game stint in the Premier League.

To save four penalities in a game is superb, and just shows how far he has come since joining the summer before last.

Now we go to Everton on Saturday who find themselves struggling this season, which I personally blame on them playing so many games.

They are competing in the Europa League this season, which means over 25 games to reach the final. This is a massive drain on any squad, so I am kind of glad we have had a year out of it this time, because maybe we might be able to comete on all domestic fronts this season after moving into the quarter finals of the League Cup!

I feel it will be a tight game again on Saturday, again a point would be a decent return. I just hope one of Emile Heskey or John Carew can find their form soon and take a bit of the pressure away from Gabby.

Have a good weekend. Up the Villa!
