Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Back to business for Wolves
Friday 30th October 2009, 9:15AM GMT.
It has been a strange few days but turned it out nice in the end for Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd ahead of the trip to Stoke.
I mentioned earlier in the week in my fan’s analysis how we suffered from yet another useless referring performance, this time courtesy of referee Peter Walton.
I’m getting a bit bored at berating the blinkered officials and the lack of decisions that seem to be coming our way, so let’s instead dwell on what was an excellent Wolves performance against Villa.
The Wolves players performed admirably against a team who were made to look clumsy at times by our energy and pace.
The finest exponent of them all was Karl Henry, who superbly shackled the Villa and kept it beautifully simple with his distribution.
I’m not sure Karl will be bound for South Africa next summer, but in my opinion he has been our best and most consistent player this season and he’ll no doubt be fired up for the tricky trip to the Britannia Stadium on Saturday to face his old team Stoke.
Every lazy pundit and journalist across the country seems to roll out the same old tired cliches when they are discussing the merits of the Potters’ Premier League exploits – long ball, long throw, direct play, etc.
I don’t think they play like a Sunday league team, and anybody who watched the goal on Saturday against Tottenham which was passed patiently and incisively from back to front will hopefully share this opinion.
Their manager Tony Pulis has put together an intimidating set of big, powerful players who can also play a bit.
Their front two of James Beattie and Ricardo Fuller will cause any defence a problem, but they may find it tough on Saturday to make an impact against our defenders Christophe Berra and Jody Craddock.
Along with Henry and Chris Iwelumo, Jody will be returning to face the team he once ridiculously played for, which was surely Mick’s biggest ever clanger as Wolves boss.
We should all be thankful that Craddock never took up Tony Pullis’s offer of a Stoke contract as, for me, his return to the side last season was one of the fundamental reasons we ended the campaign as champions.
I don’t think Mick will, or should drop any of the personnel from Saturday’s game against Villa.
It will be interesting though to see if both Iwelumo and the returning Stefan Maierhofer make the bench and if there is a place on there for Andy Keogh at all.
How will Stoke feel going into the game?
They had that fantastic win against Spurs last weekend in the league and then they were annihilated in the League Cup in midweek against Pompey, albeit with a vastly changed starting 11.
The Stoke fans inside the Britannia Stadium – which again is looking impenetrable – were recorded as the loudest in the top-flight last season, so the 3,000 travelling Wolves army will have to be in fine voice to drown out the dreadful drones of Delilah.
It’s going to be a tough ask, but us fans have been surprised before on our travels and if we can go and grab any points from the Potteries, it would be a fantastic return.
Enjoy the game on Saturday and wouldn’t it be just fantastic if Jody, Karl or big Chris popped up with the winning goal!
So, which questions did I ask Wolves manager Mick McCarthy when I met him before the Villa game on Saturday? Well, in a nutshell, I didn’t get to ask him a thing.
As I mentioned in last week’s blog, I’d won a competition with Sportingbet.com to attend the Villa game and meet Mick before kick-off.
Unfortunately, the organisers vetoed it as they saw me as a journalist and didn’t feel it was in the spirit of the competition.
So, just after a smashing bit of brunch in the sponsor’s lounge, the other nine lucky competition winners stood up and walked down to the manager’s office for a quick chat with the great eagle himself, leaving me to tuck into another pastry and play billy-no-mates!
Ah well. I was a tad disappointed as I’m certainly no journalist, just a passionate fan who types up a blog in his office at home.
But I didn’t want to take away from the other competition winners’ experience.
Anyway, as you can see from the picture above, I got to meet Bully and we had a interesting chat about our Express & Star columns.
And I was only going to ask Mick if he preferred nuggets or chips!
Apart from missing out on the chance to meet our manager, it was a cracking day all round and I’d just like to thank Gareth and Sportingbet.com for their excellent hospitality.
Up the Wolves!

I fear for Keogh! Although the Austrian hasn’t exactly impressed when has come on! I would personally consider dropping him! UTW

Who would of thought that we’d be the ‘underdogs’ and not the favourites to win going into a football match against the mighty Stoke.
How times have changed. Come on, we can’t lose to this lot.

Hi Nathan,
Good to meet you last week, was certainly a good day!
I actually think Mick sending Jody to Stoke was a good decision. He wasn’t getting in our team at the time, and a change of scenery can do wonders for a player. As you say, he came back and was immense.
To be honest, I doubt he can keep up this form all year, and Mancienne will be back in over Christmas when it gets busy, but for now it’s a pleasure watching him snuff out the oppositions attack alongside Berra.

Come on you Wolves, a point would be fantastic, although in this league it wouldnt surprise me if we won! 3 points from the next 3 games and a win v Blues and we are in a good position. I probably wouldnt make any changes to the starting 11.

I work with a Stoke fan who teaches, and he has a ‘Let Yourself Down’ table – so hopefully it will be Stoke on there on Monday not Wolves!
I think as a team we have played well. The biggest issue is the players we hoped would change things – Kightly, SEB etc – are taking longer to adjust and recover.
Personally I think if we make 2010 without going into the bottom 3 that alone will be an achievement and trust that Hull and Portsmouth have already booked their places in the Championship nexy year.

We should be smashing the clayheads – Doyle and Ebanks will be far too mobile for the Stoke’s back 8.
2-1 to Wolves and I fancy a Karl Henry goal as the winner.

WE WILL BEAT STOKE TOMORROW, WE MAYBE THE NEW BOYS BUT WE’VE GOT TOO MUCH FOR THEM TO HANDLE.
INFACT A WIN TOMORROW IS VITAL, AS I DON’T SEE US GETTING MUCH FROM THE NEXT TWO GAMES.
GREAT POINT AGAINST THE VILLA, REMEMBER THE OLD BRIAN CLOUGH ADDAGE… IF WE CAN’T WIN A GAME..MAKE SURE WE DON’T LOSE IT!!!
BARMY ARMY.

Spot on!
My only comment would be that I don’t think Mick sending Craddock on loan to Sjoke was his biggest clanger. That would be signing Jason Shackell.
But that doen’t matter now – everyone makes mistakes, Mick is doing a superb job and lets hope we do the business against Sjoke with the same team starting as started against the Villa and taking the game to them so they don’t settle.

think we have good chance at stoke if we play best team no place for george, foley, stearman,
mancienne all fit now and different class to george
lost marker in last 2 game and both everton, villa
scored.

No 8. Surely the Soup Dragon was one of the biggest Clangers? He was even bigger than Major Clanger and Grannie Clanger….
Up the Wolves!

Bring Mancienne in for George and this gives us pace at both full back positions.
Still think narrowing the pitch was a mistake. This was apparent against Villa where we were playing too tight in and around their box.

Shame you didn’t get to meet Mick, now we’ll never know his favourite breakfast cereal.

Hi Nathan,
Are you still up this way again soon? We need to organise the Black Country gathering in Yorks.
Good thoughts as usual and plenty for us to be positive about i reckon

Doyle is the keyman in this team and if he gets injured we will struggle – we MUST beat Stoke – Craddock is awesome at the moment and i would also back Karl Henry to score tomoz – cum onnnnn!!

Message to Kevin Doyle….
Listen Mate, if any of the Stoke team touch you on the ankle, fall to the ground like every other striker does in the Premier division…Just take a look at Darren Bent, Andrew Johnson and others and learn !!!!!

Some people on here are clowns. They think Wolves should just turn up and 3 points are theirs. The facts of life – as we are Premiership newcomers – is although the name of Wolverhampton Wanderers is famous across the globe we are not going to attract big names very easy due to the wage structure and that we are not established in the top league.
Although in my opinion we should have got more points from the West Ham, Hull and Pompey games, we have only been outplayed once. We have had many injuries and hopeless officials. There is every chance that in the next few weeks we will be in the bottom 3 but the fact is it is highly unlikely that we will remain there as we are not in the 3 worst teams in this league!

Thank god Chris Iwelomo is fit again, and one hopes that McCarthy has enough brains to play him for at least half the match, and along side Sylvan. At least Chris will hit the ball from outside the box, and I believe that he will be among the goals.
Despite Mancienne being the highest paid Wolves player on the payroll, which I find incredable, I would not play him again until he regains form, and would bring back Stearman on Saturday,,,I would not play Hough, or Halford, but would include Milijas and Keogh in the squad

Funny how the media perpetuate myths regarding styles of play as Nathan says about Stoke, i.e. long ball, long throw etc. In the late 80′s my neighbour was mowing his lawn and shouted across at me if I fancied going to watch Saints play Wimbledon in the afternoon, which we did. Not something many of us could do these days having to shell out £30 plus to watch a game as a neutral, in those days I doubt if it was more than a tenner. Anyway went to watch the game at the old Dell as it was a chance to see Le Tiss in his pomp, and sat and watched a really entertaining performance from Wimbledon as a neutral. I was really surprised how much football they played on the ground, with the likes of Curle, Wise and Fashanu in the side. Amazing how these myths get blown up by the media.

Sorry Nathan; take a close look at the goals conceded against Villa and Everton. On both occasions Henry was derelict in his defensive midfield duties which culminated in the goals being scored. The problems he created were compounded by Elokobi ball watching because the ball was not in his domain.
We desperately need replacements for these two in January.

I love the way that people who were saying we were clueless 2 games ago now say we should beat Stoke away. We need to want it as much as they do first (i.e. a Wigan effort not a Blackburn effort) and then take the chances we make (which won’t be many). I would take a point again.
