Indiana Jones adventure in Compton
Thursday 29th October 2009, 8:00PM GMT.
Here is the first glimpse of an ‘Indiana Jones-style’ caving adventure expected to be a massive hit at one of the region’s top new attractions.
The indoor caving system, built over two levels and containing 300 metres of tunnels, is close to completion at the new climbing centre Wolf Mountain in Wolverhampton. The centre is moving into new premises at the former Compton Park Leisure Centre in Paget Road from its previous site in Dunstall.
A £500,000 project to transform the site into one of largest climbing centres in England is well under way in preparation for its grand opening next month.
The indoor caving system is set to be the biggest of its kind in England and is three times the size of the old caving system at the previous Wolf Mountain.
Co-owner Julian Porter believes that the indoor caves would be a unique experience for visitors.
He said: “It’s full of twists, drops and turns. It’s a real favourite with kids and is sure to be very popular. It’s going to be something very different for Wolverhampton.”
Mr Porter added that the indoor caves, made from fibre glass, were ‘not for the faint hearted’ and that there were even false stalactites and stalagmites.
He said: “It’s just to give a taste of caving to give people an idea. It will be pitch black in the tunnels. There’s a few surprises in there such such as a boulder people need to move to get into the caverns.
“It’s like an Indiana Jones adventure.”
The new Wolf Mountain includes a 36ft climbing wall, archery and abseil tower. The Wolverhampton-based attraction has safeguarded its future, after setting up a new home at the former Compton Park Leisure Centre, five times the size of its previous base in Dunstall.
It attracts thousands of youngsters from across the West Midlands each year.
