Housing complex near to completion
Thursday 29th October 2009, 10:34AM GMT.
A £7.7 million housing complex that will transform living for older people in an area of Wolverhampton is expected to be completed next month.
Showell Court, in Low Hill, will offer 64 one-and two-bedroom apartments complete with living room, bathroom and kitchen, aimed at people who want to live in their own homes but who require a certain amount of help and support to do so.
Workers first moved onto the former steelworks site in Othello Road last August and it hoped the first residents will be able to move in before the end of the year.
There are 44 one-bedroom apartments, the other 20 will be double flats. Residents will be encouraged to grow their own vegetables in an allotment area, as part of the development which is known as a very sheltered housing scheme.
The council at present has a waiting list of around 100 people wanting to move into similar schemes across the city.
Each development in Wolverhampton has a cafe/restaurant and a social club giving people the chance to take part in social activities, keep fit or follow their hobbies and learn new skills such as woodwork.
The apartments at Showell Court will be available for people above the age of 55.
