Strachan eyes on Wolves ace
Wednesday 28th October 2009, 11:32AM GMT.
Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo is on a hit-list of new Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan.
The Scotland international, who has only just returned from injury, was among nine players on a list assumed to be transfer targets clutched by Strachan as he greeted fans at the Riverside to be unveiled as Boro’s new manager on Monday.
Iwelumo’s name appears along with Villa pair, central midfielder Isaiah Osbourne and right-winger Marc Albrighton, Birmingham’s former Albion striker Kevin Phillips, Tottenham’s ex-Sheffield United right-back Kyle Naughton, Stoke centre-back Andy Griffin, Arsenal forward Jack Wilshere, Portsmouth central midfielder Haydn Mullins and young Manchester United attacker Federico Macheda.
With the transfer window closed until January, Strachan’s only hope of signing any players at the moment is on loan.
But any move for Iwelumo is likely to resisted with Sam Vokes having only just joined League One leaders Leeds on a temporary basis until January.
The choice of Iwelumo is surprising given the 31-year-old has only just returned to contention after six months out with a knee injury and broken bone in his foot.
The 6ft 4ins much-travelled striker made his comeback as an 86th-minute substitute in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Villa.
He will by vying for a place in Saturday’s short trip to his first English club Stoke with Stefan Maierhofer, who has completed his one-match ban for his sending off in the 1-1 draw at Everton.
Despite the tough competition in front of him headed by £6.5m record signing Kevin Doyle and double Championship Golden Boot winner Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Iwelumo is desperate to prove himself in the Premier League and it would be a surprise if he wanted a move at this stage.
Vokes scored his first goal of the season in his third game for Leeds, who won 4-0 at Bristol Rovers last night.

Hands off Ginge!!!
There is no way Big Chris should allowed to leave, he was superb last season, with finishing of the highest standard.
Anyone remember Sheff Utd away???
Please don’t let him go.
Chris is the sort of player we need as he offers a different option to Doyle & SEB. SEB & Chris were a good partnership last season – I know that was at Championship level. But Chris does put a shift in at both ends of the park, probably gives away more than his fair share of free kicks, but given the choice of him or the Hoff I know who I would prefer – from what I’ve seen so far.

Don’t do it Chris. We need you

CI to stay and do well for us in cameo sub appearances and the odd starter game.

I think we’d be wise to make sure we keep hold of Big Chris for the time being. Vokes isn’t Prem standard, and Maierhofer looks to be a bit of a soft touch. With the pen against Villa aside, I think Ebanks-Blake looks way off the pace so far, especially when he’s playing alongside someone as busy as Doyle. Therefore I think Iwelumo will probably figure quite soon, maybe against Stoke to rough them up a bit late on??
Up The Wolves!

He’s yours for a million!
Why keep him? 5th choice striker??
No,No,No!
Up The Wolves

C’mon Chris join Back up with Blake or Doyle and we will score more goals. But please keep those elbows down it’s the prem now y’know.
please remember that most the Wolves kids are still learning. The Villa’s Utd’s and Liverpools of this league are the finished articles so we can only go from strength to strength.
keep the faith

So Strachan randomly names a whole replacement team for boro and Iwelumo is leaving cos he is one of those named?
I’m sure if asked, Mick would like Messi, Gerrard, Torres etc but that don’t mean hes getting them does it?
give him a few games to see if he can adapt 2 premier league if not use him as bait for Wheater or Johnston
Report abuse
Big Chris for Wheater plus cash sounds ok to me???

I’d be starting Big Chris on Saturday to help deal with the aerial bombardment and to add a bit of muscle.. He won’t be going anywhere!
MaWo spot on and yes to Grace…and Preston where his finishing was superb…gues he hit a purple patch in 1st half of season…heres hoping he hits another
Report abuse
What’s wrong with this guy? how many Wolves players has he brought in the past.
He’d just use Iwelumo to get into the premiership, if they do go up do you really think Boro would keep Iwelumo?.
He’s done all the hard work he’s in the premiership now he should take his chance.
Give big Chris some chance this week if possible that he is Premiership material, as I believe that he will.
He is one of Wolves only strikers that will tke a shot outside the goal square, and remember last season,, how many goals ? Keep him
Report abuse
swap deal for gary o’neil!!
I fully agree with number 2….Chris and Sylvan run well together, and score goals. Keep him.

Tell Strachen where to go or let him have Ebanks as he is too far off the pace.Iwolumo and Doyle could be a agreat partnership.Reminds me of Dougan and Richards.Actually a agood move would hae been Strachen to Wolves and MM to ,well, anybody who would have him.

Surely this story would be better in the gossip columns! Is there anyone Gordon Strachan doesn’t want to sign?!
only sell him at the right price, sell a couple of players and bring in keane in january
Report abuse
let them have the austrian!
Sounds good to me. A lot of the posters on here keep talking about last season, and rightly so, he was good last season, but, that was a different division. He, along with many of our players are not up to premiership standard so get what we can for him and sell a few others and buy someone who can score goals at the top level. This ain’t rocket science folks, it’s common sense. So long big fella and good luck.

At one time last season, he looked like being the league’s top scorer above EB and Doyle.. I fancy him to score us a few goals this season!
Any prem team worthy of the name have 4 quality strikers, Iwelumo is one of ours, no doubt! Hope he starts at Stoke!
pity strachen dident come to us and muppet mick go there.
yes i think big chris should have a start saterday and rough them up a bit they wont like having that done to them they only like dishing it out by the look of what ive seen of stoke
Report abuse
