The leading detective on the Fred and Rose West murders shared his experiences with students and fellow police colleagues during a Midlands university session.
John Bennett was Detective Superintendent Operations in 1994 when the West investigation began and the senior investigating officer throughout the enquiry.
The Birmingham City University event, hosted in conjunction with West Midlands Police, officially launched the university’s new Criminal Investigation degree, one of the first in its kind in the country.
The joint Author of the book The Cromwell Street Murders – The Detectives Story, Mr Bennett looks back on the grisly case.
He recalls his disappointment at Fred West’s suicide ahead of his court appearance and gives his take on Rose West’s future.

I was not disappointed at Fred West’s suicide. My only disappointment is that he did not end his life dangling on the end of the hangman’s rope. How people like him are not executed in this country escapes. Politically correct, left wing liberalism gone stark raving bonkers. Bring back the rope I say
