Albion set for double fitness boost

Chris Brunt Celebrates his goalChris Brunt and Roman Bednar are on course to hand Albion a double fitness boost for Saturday’s Championship clash with Watford.

Brunt was back in training yesterday after three weeks out with a calf injury while Bednar hopes to return tomorrow after his back problems.

And Baggies head coach Roberto Di Matteo believes both players should be fit to face the Hornets at The Hawthorns at the weekend.

“We’re hoping Roman will train tomorrow,” said Di Matteo today. “He’s been doing some rehab with Richie Rawlins, our physio, last week, yesterday and today.

“And then hopefully tomorrow, if everything goes to plan, he will be able to join the squad.

“Chris Brunt had his first training session with us yesterday and let’s hope he can get through the week well and we will see how he is on Saturday.

“There were no more knocks from Saturday.”

Brunt was injured in the goalless draw at Preston on October 3 and has missed three matches since limping off at Deepdale.

And Bednar suffered a rib injury and a trapped nerve in his back in the opening moments of the following match, at home to Reading, and has missed the defeat to Swansea and the draw at Coventry.

Di Matteo admitted the duo are key players in the Albion squad and the Italian is hoping their inpending return is the start of better news from the treatment room.

“Roman is a big player for us and so is Chris Brunt, and so are Ishmael Miller and James Morrison,” said Di Matteo.

“Chris was frustrated with the injury because he needs continuity to get into good form and good shape to produce.”

However, Di Matteo revealed that midfielder Morrison is still no closer to returning from the heel injury that has kept him sidelines since the end of last season.

A blister became infected and has so far required two operations with Morrison not training since May.
