We are the champions say Wolves bosses

Tuesday 27th October 2009, 11:00AM GMT.

Mick McCarthy and Peter Karlsson along with the Championship and Elite League trophy'sIt was a tale of two trophies when Wolverhampton’s speedway side celebrated their 2009 title triumph.

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Mick McCarthy was guest of honour at Monmore Green last night to hand over the Elite League trophy.

And McCarthy took along another cup to keep it company – the Coca-Cola Championship trophy which the footballing Wolves won last year.

The manager handed the EL prize to Swedish skipper Peter Karlsson and shook hands with every one of the successful Parrys International Wolves side in front of a big turnout of fans for the team’s final match of the speedway season.

The super seven even included Polish ace Adam Skornicki, who was stood down from the rest of last night’s Midland League match against Peterborough on medical advice after a horrifying heat eight crash which saw him trap a hand in a rival’s back wheel and also suffer a knee injury.

But the popular “Sqora”, who starred in Wolves’ successful march through the play-offs, refused to miss out on the celebrations – and in typical gritty speedway fashion turned up on the centre green on crutches.

Wolves even added a second trophy on the night, victory over Peterborough sealing success in the three-team Midland League over Peterborough and Coventry.

The night concluded with a spectacular firework display – but Wolves’ celebrations are not over yet.

The team stages its annual club presentation evening on Saturday at the Ramada Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton.

Wolves star Fredrik Lindgren had a double reason to celebrate after another of his clubs, Zielona Gora, won the Polish League title on Sunday at Torun.

nice to see wolves speedway team win the elite league. shame that McCarthy had to give the trophy. it will be the only trophy he will hold this season. thay should have got someone else to hand it over.

Fair play, its good to see the City of Wolverhampton bringing home the trophys.

Even away from the mediocrity of their football clubs, when was the last time our under achieving, ambitionless, second city Birmingham ever had anything to celebrate??

Birmingham can’t even produce an X Factor finalist!
