Not many cocksure young comedians would swap a cushy job on TV to go back to stand-up.
But it’s a decision that suits former Never Mind The Buzzcocks host Simon Amstell as a packed Grand Theatre saw last night.
In a brave departure from the fearless taunting of celebrities and Z-listers that he was famous for on Buzzcocks, Amstell’s main object of ridicule on his Do Nothing tour is himself – and to hilarious effect.
It’s surprising to hear him confess to insecurities, but the 29-year-old has a lot more to offer live than just acerbic put downs.
The show saw him muse his way through disastrous dating attempts to believing he had contracted cat flu.
His deadpan delivery had the crowd creased with laughter as he mulled over his so-called failings. Brilliant.

I was very impressed, didn’t get a ticket until two days before, just wanted to fill an empty night in. It was great fun, not just normal stand up,
I would recommend to anybody who enjoys a laugh.
