Petrov desperate to lift silverware
Tuesday 27th October 2009, 9:12AM GMT.
Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov has admitted he is desperate to lift some silverware as skipper.
The claret and blues captain has already seen the team eliminated from the Europa League this season since taking the armband in the summer, and hits the trophy trail again with a Carling Cup fourth round tie at Sunderland tonight.
Petrov has yet to even reach a competitive cup final with Villa, the closest being a last 16 exit to Everton in the FA Cup last season.
In fact, you have to go all the way back to 2000 for the last time the Villa Park club were in a final, and that was another FA Cup defeat to Chelsea.
But their Bulgarian skipper has lifted a Scottish League Cup with Celtic, and would love the chance to emulate that success at Wembley this season with the five-time winners of the competition.
He said: “I would be very proud to lift a trophy as skipper but not just for me, for the fans and the other players as well, because to win something goes down in history.
“One day when you finish you can say ‘we did that’ and you want to make everyone proud. I won the League Cup in Scotland and you get a taste for it, it gives you even more desire to go and do it again.
“The fans want a trophy and I have not played at Wembley. Everyone wants to play in finals.”
