Jarvis ready to prove himself again

Tuesday 27th October 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

WOLVES V WEST HAM 16 EB 15Wolves winger Matt Jarvis believes he must prove himself all over again at Molineux after revealing he was axed from the team for the quality of his crosses.

The flying wide man had produced more centres than anyone else in the Premier League – 85 – but it wasn’t enough to keep his place in the side.

Jarvis was dropped for the 1-1 draw at Everton, then missed out on a return against Villa as Wolves recorded draws against two top-six sides.

Now the 23-year-old is determined to force his way back in by doing extra work on the training ground to impress boss Mick McCarthy.

He said: “The gaffer told me he wanted a bit more end product from me. Hopefully I can deliver that in the future. I was gutted I wasn’t playing, but I’ve just got to fight my way back into the team.

“I’ve got to prove myself again, work hard in training and get another chance, then hopefully I can stay in the team. I want to carry on from where I left off but hopefully put a bit more end product in which we can get some goals from.”

But Jarvis isn’t bitter and accepts McCarthy has an extremely competitive squad, where there are 24 players of similar quality all vying for a place in the starting XI.

The winger said: “There is a massive squad and we all want to play, but you can’t always be in the team. It’s very good for the gaffer that he can turn around and see seven good players to bring on.

“He’s got another team that’s capable of playing in the Premier League, so that has to be a positive thing for the club.

“I’m always trying to improve my game by doing extra bits on the training ground, to make sure I can put good balls in.

“I do extra sessions with assistant boss Terry Connor. Our fitness coach Tony Daley was a very similar player to me in terms of where he used to play, so they’ve been great and hopefully I can just learn and improve my game.

“I’m deseperate to get back in the side.”

Think it’s fair he was dropped. He has looked a little short on confidence or something because he doesn’t seem to be getting at his man like previous years… too quick to put a foot on it and come back / inside.

I can’t wait to see him get his head down and terrify a few fullbacks like last year. We know he can…

Completely agree with the decision to drop Jarvo. He has pace to burn but very little else I’m afraid and he has been found out this season where quality of supply really does count. He is still a young player, however, and I hope he takes this set-back in his stride and comes back a better player. We’ve put in 2 decent performances in his absence and he will now have to be patient waiting for his next chance. I think he still has a role to play as, perhaps, an impact player when he can come off the bench for the last 20 mins or so,when players are tiring,to inject some pace and, hopefully, prove he can deliver a quality ball from which we can score.

The statistics speak for themselves. 85 crosses. And the impact on our goals scored? He was fouled for the free-kick from which we scored against Wigan and he put over the corner which Maierhofer scored against Blackburn.

Glad to see your working on improving Matt but I certainly think we needed to drop you. The stats certainly show you getting into the right positions – but equally that you’re too wasteful/ineffective when you get there. Fingers crossed the extra work you’re doing addresses this.

I would love to see Jarvo and Kites in same team together. With Henry and Castillo providing a solid base in the middle i think we just lack that extra 5% needed to unlock defences in this league. There isnt quite enough guile/creation between midfield and forwards. Maybe against ‘lesser’ teams we should have a go a bit more and two wingers would be one way. Im pleased with start we’ve made but we need to start getting few wins on board, especially against teams around us. C’mon me babees.

Whilst yes, it is a correct decision to drop jarvo for the quality of his crossing recently(positive outcome contribution), but why do certain players seem to have twice as many games in which to improve / positively contribute before being forced from the team with an unrelated injury / abscence?????????????

Jarvis lacks confidence, it was right to drop him to the bench, but we need a player on the wing with the speed of Jarvis to return soon, and I hope Mccarthy gives him another go very soon.
I too would like see Jarvis and kightly in the same team with Ebanks Doyle and Chris Iwelomo, who must get some match time against Stoke.

We are lacking a striker with the guts to shoot from outside the penalty area, Chris Iwelomo is possibly the answer, as it will be him and only him to get Ebanks believing in himself again, and if he can do that we will have two players that can score goals like last Season. We cannot afford to lose the speed of Jarvis, and need Iwelomo, Ebanks and Doyle together with kightly to beat Stoke on the week end.
We must drop Halford, ( what other premiership team would include him just for his throw ins ! ) and look to bringing back Stearman into the squad.

It’s quality and not quantity that matters in the final third and so far Jarvo doesn’t look like he can provide enough killer balls from the opportunities he has had to cross the ball. Although sometimes there have been no forwards to aim at, he was rightly dropped in my opinion.

The only negative against Villa was we didn’t create chances…because there were no crosses coming in. Did we have a single cross in open play? I don’t remember any.

We ran up to the defence, tried to pass through them like the defenders weren’t there, and the usual aerial bombardment… and non of it worked.

No one ran at the defense with pace, or tried to get around them on the wings…which is what Jarvis does best. But, obviously the final cross then needs to be accurate.

As the headline says…Jarvis just needs to prove himself, but as much to himself as to Mick McCarthy. Mick was right to drop him & now hopefully he’ll come back with his head together & do what we all know he’s capable of.

Matt Jarvis will definitely get minutes on the pitch as we cannot expect too much out of Kites yet. He has just come back from a long term injury and is finding his feet in the top division.
In terms of his crossing, it certainly was poor against West Ham but what we also have to look at is whether there is a target man to aim at? Now big Chris is back you have one but the Hoff needs to work on his leaping. The other striker who is very good in the air is Vokes – currently at Leeds!

4-3-3 Is the way to go in this league, believe me. Now that we have shored up the midfield with Henry & Castillo, the time is right to bring Milijas back in – he was a luxury we couldn’t afford playing as one of two central midfielders -with Kightly having a free role going left and right we’ll start to create more.

    23. What utter rubbish, personally prefer to Kightly who should be dropped on the way Jarvo has been dropped. His crossing has been utter garbage so far, while not putting in nearly as many crosses as Jarvis. Elokobi should be dropped on that basis to, his distribution has not been like it should be. while I love both Kites and George to bits, jarvis is the most exciting player I’ve seen at Wolves (along with Doyle) for years!

GREAT TO SEE SO MANY COMMENTS SUPPORTING THE MANAGER FOR HIS DECISION TO DROP MATT JARVIS. MANY APPLAUDED HIS WISDOM IN SIGNING MICHAEL MANCIENNE, AND I NOW APPLAUD HIS DECISION TO DROP HIM. IF A PLAYER ISN´T DELIVERING THE GOODS, LET HIM KNOW BY DROPPING HIM. I´M NOT AN MM FAN PARTICULARLY, I´M A WOLVES FAN WHOLE HEARTEDLY. MANAGERS COME AND MANAGERS GO BUT ONE ONLY HAS TO SEE THAT THE CLUBS WHO BUILD, BUILD FROM A SOLID BASE. THEY DON´T SACK THEIR MANAGERS EVERY FIVE MINUTES.
PLAYERS HAVE TO LEARN TO PLAY THE CLUB OR THE MANAGERS WAY. END OF. I FOR ONE THOUGHT FREDDY EASTWOOD WAS A PERFECT INVESTMENT FOR OUR CLUB BUT I TAKE MY HAT OFF TO MM FOR SELLING HIM ON. AFTER ALL LAST YEARS EXCITEMENT ABOUT FREDDY AND YER MAN BILLY SHARPE , WELL, ARE THEY SETTING THE CHAMPIONISHIP ALIGHT????? NO, LET´S BE CLEAR ABOUT THAT.
I KNOW MM APPEARS TO HAVE HIS FAVOURITES BUT FAIR PLAY, HE GAVE PRAISE TO ANDY KEOGH FOR HIS GOAL AGAINST WIGAN AND OTHER PERFORMANCES AND HE DROPPED HIM. HE PAID GOOD WEDGE FOR NENAD MILIJAS AND THEN DROPPED HIM.
IT´S CLEAR TO ME THE MAN HAS PRIDE AND WILL EAT IT. I´M IMPRESSED BY THAT. IT´S A LONG SEASON IN THE PREMIERSHIP AND HARDER THAN US MERE VIEWERS CAN KNOW. I DON´T LIKE MM PERSONALLY BUT I´LL RESPECT HIM COME NEXT MAY IF WE SURVIVE THE DROP, OR IF WE GO DOWN WITH DIGNITY. LOOK AT THE BAGGIES. LIKE BOLTON. IT´S NOT ONLY THE TEAM, IT´S THE CLUB WHERE THE DETERMINATION IS NEEDED AND ULTIMATELY THE FANS HAVE TO REFLECT THE PASSION, OTHERWISE……WE MAY FORGET IT. WOLVES WERE A GREAT CLUB ONCE AND WE WANT, RATHER THAN DESERVE, TO BE A GREAT CLUB AGAIN. THAT, AS FANS, IS WHAT WE HAVE TO COME TO TERMS WITH

Can’t believe how quickly some people are to write off a good player the minute they lose a bit of form, he’s a good young player who will improve and it’s encouraging that he’s working hard to improve his game, at least he cares.
If his crossing was as good as his dribbling and pace, he would of been snapped up by a bigger club ages ago, no players perfect, i think he’ll come good for us, just give him a time.

Jarvo has been made a scapegoat for our strikers’ inability to get in the right positions to offer a good target. I’d be happy with 3 points from the next 3 games and I think we are most likely to get it against Arsenal. Stoke are favourites to shade us on Saturday and at Chelsea just a case of having a go really. 4 points would be a fantastic return. I think we need to flood the midfield on sat and I would go with 5 with Milijas playing behind Doyle, kites, Castillo, Henry, Edwards. Lets get an early goal and out-sign those stoke fans.
