Villa boss was furious reveals Petrov

Martin O'NeillVilla manager Martin O’Neill slammed his team’s performance in the draw at Wolves as their worst of the season – skipper Stiliyan Petrov has revealed.

Skipper Petrov lifted the lid on the half-time dressing down O’Neill gave his players in Saturday’s disappointing 1-1 draw at Molineux.

But despite blowing a 1-0 lead by handing Mick McCarthy’s men a late penalty, Petrov insisted it was still a good point for the claret and blues considering how badly they played.

He said: “If you look at it overall, it is a good point for us because the first half was really hard. It was a different game to the Chelsea game. We expected a battle and we didn’t get going at all.

“The manager said he has never seen us play so badly this season and he was right. We knew that without him even saying that.

“We took his advice and in the end we nearly won without playing that well. Maybe a few years ago we would have lost that game in the last few minutes.

“Hopefully it will be a vital point at the end of the season.”

Nicky Shorey (knee) and Habib Beye (ankle) are both doubts for tomorrow’s Carling Cup trip to Sunderland after missing Saturday’s clash.

O’Neill said: “We played a little game on Thursday for some of the players who needed a little bit of football and Habib and Nicky got injured.”
