Olsson plays down angry exchange

Monday 26th October 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

olsson angerAlbion defender Jonas Olsson has played down his angry exchange with fans at Coventry by insisting the clash was ‘no big deal.’

The vice-captain lost his temper with a handful of supporters in the wake of Saturday’s goalless draw at Coventry, claiming ‘bad gestures’ were aimed in his direction.

But the Swede has now attempted to diffuse any ill-feeling and blamed the incident on raw emotions in the immediate aftermath of the game.

He said: “It was nothing. It is just me. I am very emotional, it wasn’t a big thing for me and I hope it wasn’t a big thing for them.

“I was applauding the fans because I thought they put up a good effort. There are always a few who say things, it’s understandable that they were disappointed and we are not happy.

“The support we had was good with a few thousand going there and there was just a bit of emotion from me after the game. We are as disappointed as they are after losing two points.”

Olsson went to applaud the 4,000 travelling fans at the final whistle, but a small number of supporters responded by venting their anger at the central defender.

He said: “I was applauding 99.9 per cent of them. When I go over and applaud them they don’t have to applaud back, but they don’t have to make bad gestures.”

Now is the winter of our discontent
And all the clouds that lour’d upon our hawthorns
Our dreadful marches to delightful measures.
But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks,
Deformed, unfinish’d, sent before my time
Dive, thoughts, down to my soul: here

I must admit that I booed the team at the final whistle, but then made a rapid exit – 90 minutes of nothing was quite enough for me. The problem with the performance from a players point of view was that we offered absolutely nothing up front, and from a management point of view, that we made no attempt to seize the initiative against what was obviously a very poor side. I don’t think any criticism would have been aimed at Olsson personally as he had nothing to do all afternoon – he just took the flak for the performances of some of his colleagues (and the Head Coach).
It isn’t a crisis as we are still third in the table and playing decent football for the most part – we just need to sort out the forwards, starting with giving Cox a run out for a few games (and not as a lone striker)

olsson only just signed a new contract i am not worried about him leaving. and no need for so much negativity we’re very close to walking away with this league. 1 striker to go on a run of goalscoring form and we’re fine. we are the third highest scorers in the league behind cardiff and QPR and we look lots tighter this season don’t be worried be positive.

3 and 4 i totally agree with you, and yes, if anything we should vent any upset towards our strikers, how does Luke Moore continue to get away unscathed. Olsoon and his boys did their job at the back and kept a clean sheet. Pathetic.
Stick with us Jonas, don’t let a few rotten apples spoil the whole barrel.

You should be worrying about the reason that you don’t need to worry about this problem in January.

On the article. Reading on here somedays is it any wonder there are people that abuse the players on the pitch.

    Well said.

I think I’ll join Happy Baggie in his self imposed exile for a while. I know a lot of the comments are from Wulfies in disguise and some others make good points but it’s the mindless minority who turn up after a bad result that depress me. Remember Leicester. S**t happens.

Just cause he signed a new contract doesn’t mean that he’s happy with his treatment from the fans. Mowbray’s recent comments about needing to strengthen the defence at Celtic and having his eye on a player that had just signed a new contract may give it away. He will leave as contracts stand for nothing!

The fans who vented their frustration at Ollson at the weekend should be ashamed of them selves. He has been our best performer since arriving and he does not deserve it.
As for the game its clear to see we need to address our front line and get Mattock out the team. he is not Championship standard, in a few seasons maybe. When Brunt returns play him left wing and Cech Left back.

The way Celtic are performing there’s a chance that Mowbray wont be there in January. I can’t see Olsen wanting to leave anyway having just signed a new contract neither will Dorrens leave. I can’t understand all the panic , once Bednar and Brunt are back the goals will come again. Probably just like the Newcastle and Boro fans we are expecting to walk this league but it ain’t going to happen. It will be a struggle all the way through and we better get used to it.

Big Wooden Spoon, do you have no faith in JP buddy, if someones just signed a new contract JP is going to bump up an extra couple of mil onto any bid he gets in and another point, JONAS OLSSON HAS STATED IT IS WATER OFF A DUCKS BACK TO HIM! THATS WHAT THIS STORIES ABOUT!! He clearly states quote

“It was nothing. It is just me. I am very emotional, it wasn’t a big thing for me”

Come on now boo boys. Stay positive!!
Mowbray can try what he wants, doesn’t mean he’ll have the cash. just look at the Greening saga, we squeezed them for everything they had to spare.

I would be interested to see your five worst players, number 22.
There were some terrible teams during the 1990′s. They were our darkest years, ever, as a club, with the least talented collection of players in our league history going back to 1888.

But Luke Moore is like a renegade from those terrible times.
He is missing out on so many basics: Where do we start?

Playing on his heels, rather than toes. Never making a challenge on a defender. The useless run-ins to the goalkeeper, when he has no chance of beating him to the ball. A lazy swing of a shot, with his head held high, so ball soars 12 to 15 feet high. Unable or unwilling to make runs off defenders to the left or right, to open up gaps of five yards, rather than the five feet he is offering to our midfielders to thread a ball through to his feet. As a result, passes are constantly cut out. Even Bobby Hope could not find this man. He looks like he should be at Shrewsbury or Hereford – with no offence to either well-run club.

Martin O’Neill, such an enthusiastic man manager, gave up on him. He told friends that Luke Moore looked so good in training, but he could never motivate him for games. His attitude stank. A thoroughly rotten egg in any team. Please don’t play him again. The player has no genuine appetite for the game.

    23 Garth.
I was going to give it a break from writing on here but I couldn’t resist commenting on your excellent blog.

When he first came, I heard a similar rumour ‘from a source inside the club’ about Villa wanting rid of him at any cost. I was told that far from costing the reported £3 mill, he came gift wrapped and delivered to the door. I tend to dismiss these rumours and believe in giving anyone a fair crack.

Luke Moore has had that fair crack and although I’d never boo one of our players, I’m finding it increasingly difficult to get excited when he plays up front. As you point out, he makes life difficult for the midfield players to create anything.

I think Saturday is the right time to give Simon Cox 90 minutes to prove his point, or if not him then anyone that wants to be there and fight for the shirt.

I think what 22 Netherton is getting at is not ‘the worst 5 players’ from a skill factor but from the effort point of view. As you said, in the 90′s we had some real nonentities but we had people like the little pit bull of a winger who’s name escapes me, I think it was Percy something. Never the most skilful but the crowd loved him for his sheer never say die attitude. Wheraes Luke Moore has skill, good build and pace yet could match Damien DeFreitas for sheer grit and determination.

Some excellent points of view. The top of the division is starting to get more than interesting now that Leicester are in the mix, and Strachan has taken the reigns at Middlesborough. This has to be more fun than the weekly humiliation there was at the bottom of the Premier Division last season, and with that unforgiving global spotlight turned off, better performances should evolve.

Its no wonder our strikers cant score goals with
RDM basically playing 6 defenders at home,
he really needs to be more positive in games
    starting with Watford on saturday.
    Possible Albion 11:
    Carson,Zuiverloon,Jara,Olsson,Cech,
    Brunt,Koren,Dorrans,Thomas,Cox,Bednar.

Once a manager stops talking to the press before and after games then Iam affraid it spells the end,GARY MEGSON,BRYAN ROBSON,
TONY MOWBRAY,and now ROBERTO DI MATTEO.

Can you or anyone else remember that wingers name. Little ginger haired, pocket battleship. I think he was from Tipton and his first name was Percy. I’ve got Percy Freeman on the brain but he was our ex lorry driver centre forward in the sixties (about as subtle as if he was driving his lorry on the pitch) but again a real tryer who appreciated the life we’d all love, being a professional footballer.
Please somebody, put me out of my misery. I’m starting to think of Percy Shaw now and he invented cat’s eyes.
