Olsson happy to be a favourite

COV V WBA 10 EB 24Albion’s Jonas Olsson has insisted the club are happy to live with the pressure of being Championship promotion favourites.

The Baggies have won just once in six League matches since their 5-0 win at Middlesbrough caught the eyes of fans across the country.

But defender Olsson is adamant added pressure is not to blame for the recent wobble, although he admitted that Saturday’s draw at Coventry represented another two points dropped for Roberto Di Matteo’s men.

He said: “We put pressure on ourselves. We know there will be high expectations of us and we expect a lot from ourselves and from the guys next to us on the field.

“I like the pressure. It’s a new situation from last season but being a team that has just come down and keeping most of the squad, we expect ourselves to be up there.

“The players and the coaching staff are focused every day in training on making this a good season and getting back on track.

“For me the pressure is something good and if you have that mentality, as professionals should have, then the pressure makes you train harder and want to win more games. For me it’s something positive.”

Olsson admitted his disappointment at Saturday’s result against a struggling Coventry side, which followed a home defeat by Swansea last Tuesday.

But the Swede insisted there is no cause for major concern.

He said: “For us it was definitely two points lost. We’re not doing anything better or worse than we were earlier in the season, but it isn’t to be at the moment.

“For two games in a row, at home to Swansea and at Coventry, we have lost or got a 0-0 and at the beginning of the season we maybe would have won that game.

“It’s about small margins and it wasn’t to be on Saturday. I don’t think we played our best game, but we were solid in behind and we had enough chances to win the game.

“Every team at the top is struggling a bit. It is a long season of 46 games and you can’t win them all but we have been struggling since the Middlesbrough game.

“I thought we were back on track after the game against Reading but it wasn’t to be.

“The only really bad game we have played was against Barnsley away and we knew coming into the season that we couldn’t win them all.

“It’s still early in the season and we are up there and with the squad we have and the players we’re missing, as the season progresses we are going to be a better team.

“We have Chris Brunt, James Morrison, Roman Bednar and Ishmael Miller missing and all will come back.”
