Ebanks-Blake targets goals glut

Monday 26th October 2009, 11:27AM GMT.

WOLVES V VILLA 1 AE 24Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake believes his penalty against Villa lifted a weight off his shoulders and could open the floodgates for a goals spree.

The double Golden Boot winner finally scored his first Premier League goal at the sixth time of asking, when the forward netted from the spot in Saturday’s 1-1 draw four minutes after Gabriel Agbonlahor’s 79th-minute opener.

Now the 23-year-old plans to add to his tally after admitting it was a huge relief to open his account.

He said: “It’s a weight off my shoulders. Strikers are judged on their goals. I was delighted to score the penalty – it meant a lot to me.

“The fact it was in the Premier League made it special. We’re all new to the best league in the world, so to score in it is what it’s all about.

“I love scoring goals and I was delighted to get a point. I’ve been out injured and not played as many games as I would have liked, so I was delighted to score.”

Ebanks-Blake insists he is always confident of scoring if he continues to get opportunities.

He said: “If I get chances and enough of them, I will score.”

Wolves have had blatant penalties turned down against Wigan, Sunderland and Portsmouth this season and the striker admitted the decision for his was long overdue.

He said: “It was about time we got one and there was no better time than a derby at home.”

Ebanks-Blake was also convinced Wolves should have had a spot kick for Richard Dunne’s challenge on Kevin Doyle.

He said: “It was definitely a penalty. I asked the ref whether he’d looked at it at half-time and he wasn’t sure, but it evened itself out in the second half.

“I reckon if it had happened anywhere else on the pitch he would have given a free-kick, so that it was a penalty.”

Ebanks-Blake insists he was always confident of scoring.

He said: “There’s always pressure on you with a penalty. It’s the one occasion in a game where the focus is on one player so there’s pressure with. But I’ve taken penalties before and scored so I was confident.”Ebanks

“If I get chances and enough of them I will score” Well guess what Sylv- so would I! Fact is that at this level you don’t and you have to make sure you do better with half chances. We were trying to walk the ball into the net saturday.. Hows about a bit of shooting practice in training this week?

I thought SEB looked really sharp for the first 20 minutes or so,but then he seemed less effective. I think he got a knock and no doubt Villa tightened up on him.The lack of goals from open play is a real concern.

I thought the team played well on Saturday and Karl Henry was brilliant in midfield for those who watched him. For me he was the best player on the pitch by a mile (Magnificent). So far we should have had about 4 penalties this season. It about time we got what we deserve a decent referee who has got good sight and keeps up with the play! If we had had those penalties awarded to us we would have at least another six points on the board.

Wel done to the whole team. They were brilliant, we just need to be a little sharper in front of goal.

Great result on Saturday. No way back in for Mancienne. Karl Henry was outstanding and Zubar ensures we have pace at the back.
We need to get something at Stoke. The Blues and Bolton games are winnable but we are surely not one of the 3 worst teams in the division!

It was a clear penalty, but no more than the last few not given. With our recent luck, especially against the Villa, I’m surprised Kites wasn’t booked for diving!

As for Doyle being honest & not going down… I’m proud of him for staying on his feet, and he probably wouldn’t been given one anyway if his flattening into the ground at Sunderland was anything to go by.

I watched the game on ESPN and they highlighted Dunne’s identical foul v Chelsea last week…where Dunne links arms like he’s morris dancing then falls down taking his victim down with him. The ref doesn’t see any obvious signs of contact as there’s no sudden grabbing or pushing. But with Doyle it looked like 3 seperate fouls…so surely the ref or his assistant should have seen something.

So now that we’ve actually been given one…does this mean the Referee’s Association has now formally lifted sanctions against Wolves penalty claims?

    Simon :)

    I’ve had a great thought….

If we try and play a passing game like Arsenal against Stoke and a Stoke long throw “percentages” game against Arsenal we could take 6 points.

But if we do it the other way round….oh dear!

Karl Henry was awesome and thoroughly deserved his Man of the Match Award. Fanny Craddock was fantastic bar the goal ( and not many defenders would have coped with that)

What happened to those Vlla wingers who were going to make big George look amateurish? I didn’t spot anyone giving him a nightmare game. I reckon they didn’t actually relish one to ones with him too much after someone bounced off hikm quite early in the game.

The defence looked really solid – how does Mancienne get back in now?

Everton didn’t play well? Because we didn’t let them.

Villa didn’t play well? Because we didn’t let them (The same Villa that had a great result against Chelsea last week) Losing would have been a travesty (not forgetting that some so-called experts had us down for being thrashed by Villa again!)

In this league and in our first season in it we are going to have some good days and we will have some bad days. But we MUST stick together.

Against Villa, the team selection was spot on. The tactics were spot on and the team gave their all. They outplayed Villa first half,Doyle was actually fouled TWICE by Dunne for the penalty – look at the replays!!!

The team is getting stronger – sure we will have some results go against us this year.BUT – Get behind the team.

This is the strongest this club has been for 25 years – proud to be a Wolves fan!!!!!

McCarthy needs to manipulate the press in the same way as Fergie and Co do to get into the refs heads. Every chance he gets, he needs to complain about the unfair treatment newly promoted teams get – how refs haven’t got the balls to make decisions against the bully boys of the Premier League. The wannabe Hitlers in black won’t take kindly to being labelled as a bottler and will want to show the world who is boss!! – hopefully.

I think most of us knew before a ball was kicked that we were regularly going to be badly let down by the prem officals, don’t expect it to get any better!

The only way to overcome is to make it irrelevant a la Wigan..

Also, We need to be making a LOT more chances to have a hope of surviving with what we’ve got. Fair play to the defence over the last couple of games, but we are always likely to ship at least 1 over 90 minutes at this level. If we are to get the win, we desparately need to get amongst the goals – and our strikers need more chances to be able to do that, it’s not as if they are Torres or Drogba!

Watched the game on Saturday and have come to the conclusion that this season should not be judged on individual or team performances, as a lot of Wolves fans like to moan about. Molineux should be a place where any team that comes along with respective fans should get drowned out for 90 minutes! Its time the fans of this club stopped moaning and winging and just got behind the team and the manager. Survival is the key at this level and if we stay up who cares if we should of beat Hull or Pompey. Come on get a grip you lot. We are Woves at the end of the day something alot of fans can’t handle.

For those stating that Mancienne won’t get back in, just consider how he has been played in the wrong position. He is not big enough to be a centre back, he is fast and dynamic and needs to be played at left back, but thick Mick insisted in playing him out of position, in spite of everybody here warning him about his flawed selections.

I see a pattern developing that we saw over the last two seasons. Mad Mick is going down his own obsessive route, until he is forced to return to reality! Mancienne is the best player we have, yet Mick can’t use him properly.

No wonder there is so much disquiet in the team!

We need a win at Stoke to really push on now – and any points return from Arsenal and Chelsea will be a bonus. If we are on 13 points from 13 games – I will be quite happy !! Confident we can pick up a further 27 points plus from the remaining 25 games ;-) We have to play Burnley, Brum, Wigan home, Bolton, Hull away , Sunderland home etc etc – so I think we can do it !!

29 – you would know about this disquiet how?

Oh – and could you also tell me how many times Mancienne has played at left-back for Chelsea and the England Under 21s.

The only reason people are saying to play him left-back now is because he looks vulnerable at Centre-Back. He coped there okay in the Championship (most of the time but not always) but has found it more difficult in the Preniership.

Did you actually see the last two games? I did – and the defence was much much stronger as a unit, particularly against a pacey, fluent Villa attack, which had outwitted Chelsea’s defence last week.

Get a grip – stop moaning. Mick has got this club to the best position we’ve been in for 25 years both on and off the pitch. get behind the club. If you don’t like it, go somewhere else.

    Best Wishes

As much as I hope I am wrong, SEB isn’t going to score enough from open play at this level.
His all round game is poor. The ball just doesn’t stick to him with his back to goal and play breaks down far too often as a result.

Solid championship player, but no more than that. Look at Fuller, for stoke, power, pace, goals. Sorry but SEB aint a patch on him. Not good enough sadly and I don’t base that on this season alone.

So, in his second full game back from injury which kept him out for 7 games, some people are still criticising SEB for not scoring earlier.

This was against the same Aston Villa defence that had restricted Drogba and Anelka to only a couple of chances the weekend before – a team that has scored 24 goals in 10 games (versus our 9 achieved mainly without SEB).

Whilst Keogh was impressive early in the season, I think Doyle runs too many similar patterns and with a far superior goals scored record, you can’t see a starting position for Keogh whilst Doyle is fit. For the second striker, you either play a target man (Lumes or Hoff) or play SEB. What you don’t do – which was why SEB struggled on Sat, especially in the second half – is play without a target man and then proceed to play as if you are. How the hell were SEB/Doyle expected to win the ball regularly against Dunne/Collins? Even more so when Halford wasn’t on given winning headers is the other thing he can do other than his throw in! Admittedly Vile put us under pressure to play this way, but we need to come up with a better plan B (or as Sheffield Wolf suggest, albeit for different reasons, take SEB off and bring on the target man).

Ironically, the first couple of times that Henners played the short goal kick on Sat was immediately after Lumes came on and SEB went off.

SEB has the potential to get goals in this division just as Kites has the potential to make an impact. But we don’t know how they’ll do – just please give them the chance to get back to full fitness and adjust to life in the prem before writing them off!

Our strikers, in particular Sylvan, need to have the guts to shoot from outside the goal area at every possible opportunity. I have seen every Wolves game so far this season and can only remember a handful of 20-30 yard shots at goal, one in particular from Milijas, the other from Keogh.
Our strikers are attempting to tap the ball into the goal inside the area, and with the fierce defending from our opponents are getting nowhere.
We are failing in the air in front of goal generally due to the inccuracy of the crosses from the wing…. We must have a player who is not afraid to have a go from outside the box, and that player I believe is big Chris, a striker who has not been tried this Season, who I think will be a reverlation.
What a waste to give him , what was it 5 minutes at the end of last weeks game.

Lets hope that MacCarthy gives big Chris a decent run with Sylvan, they work well together, and that he returns Jarvis to the squad, and Stearman should replace big George.

Prediction for the Stoke game I believe will be a 2-1 win for Wolves, with Sylvan nailing the winner.

i agree with 32 in that SEB first touch and control are lacking at this level, and his hold up play isnt the best. But he is strong and does get in the right positions. I dont expect him to get 15-20 goals, but 7-10 goals would be pretty good. Miljas needs to play especially at home as he is the only creative player we have.
