Brunt and Bednar near to return

PRESTON V WBA 15 EB 03Albion hope Chris Brunt and Roman Bednar can face Watford on Saturday after boss Roberto Di Matteo admitted his side have lost their “cutting edge.”

The Baggies failed to score for the third time in four matches at the weekend, as they battled to a goalless draw at Coventry.

Di Matteo is hoping the return of the injured Brunt and Bednar can spark his team back into life in front of goal.

He said: “We’ll be assessing how close Roman Bednar and Chris Brunt are tomorrow. In the first half on Saturday we moved the ball and switched play nicely.

“To be honest, Coventry didn’t really get near us and we looked comfortable. Defensively we were quite solid throughout. We just missed that cutting edge in front of goal or a bit of luck, like a deflection going for us.

“Is it a confidence thing in front of goal? It might be at the moment, so we’ll try to work on that as well because we just don’t seem to be able to score.

“It’s stating the obvious, but you need to score goals to win games, and we’re struggling to do that.

“We’ll have to address that because we want to win games and we’re not winning as many as we would like.

“It’s a tough league. Every game is hard. But we’re also missing a few players who are important to us.”

Failure to beat the Sky Blues also cost the Baggies top spot in the Championship as Di Matteo and Co dropped to third place.

But the Italian insisted losing the lead is not a major issue so early in the campaign.

He said: “It’s very tight at the top and the league is very balanced. But it depends where you are at the end of the season.

“As long as we stay in touch with the top, we’ll be okay.”
