Wolves 1 Villa 1

Saturday 24th October 2009, 2:45PM BST.

WOLVES V VILLA 9 AE 24Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake cancelled out a late Gabriel Agbonlahor goal to leave honours deservedly even in the early kick-off after a dour derby at Molineux.

Ebanks-Blake struck his first Premier League goal from the spot in the 83rd minute, after Michael Kightly had been upended by Steve Sidwell.

It was his first goal since a promotion clincher against QPR on April 18 and levelled Agbonahor’s sixth of the season on 79 minutes, when the England striker turned Jody Craddock to fire home from six yards.

Wolves still have just one home win this season, while Villa have now lost just one in 10. The late goals livened up a derby which was dying on his feet.

The home side had the better of the first half, but Villa were having slightly the better of things before they broke the deadlock.

The visitors broke first and could have taken the lead after just 40 seconds.

Agbonlahor latched onto a long kick by keeper Brad Friedel which had been allowed to bounce, but could only fire tamely at Wayne Hennessey at his near post.

Both teams had shouts for a penalty in a stodgy first-half, much of which was played in driving rain.

Wolves’ came in the third minute, when Kevin Doyle was pulled down by his Republic of Ireland team-mate Richard Dunne only for referee Peter Walton to wave claims away.

Villa’s came 20 minutes later, when Christophe Berra was held back by John Carew.

The home side next chance came in the 35th minute when Michael Kightly’s corner hit Doyle on the back, with the ball volleyed off the line by James Milner.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake wasted two chances to break his Premier League duck before the break.

First his overhead kick flew over, after Jody Craddock’s header from Kightly’s corner was returned to the danger area. Then the striker headed wide from a Kightly free kick.

Chances were few and far between in a frustrating second half, with constant stoppages, along with yellow cards for Villa’s John Carew and Stephen Warnock, joining Wolves’ Segundo Castillo into the referee’s notebook.

Villa looked the more likely scorers and Ashley Young broke clear for a shot that flew just a foot wide on 64 minutes. But the game sank into a stalemate, with both teams cancelling each other out until the late drama.

Dour Derby? Stodgy first half? I must have been somewhere else then. Well, wherever I was, the lads in the gold shirts seemed to play pretty well in the first half. A bit mediocre later on but a fantastic atmosphere in what I had assumed to be the South Bank. Now where on earth was I?

Typical derby game. However, we were lucky to get on the score sheet. I didn’t think we were going to score if we played all week.

Not sure if SEB is ready for the Premier; only time will tell with more games but, what is our best striking option?

I thought Doyle had an ok game, but not his best. Kightly, in my estimation, is lightweight, although contributed to the penalty.

Craddock was solid except for the turn by Agbonlahor. Castillo and Zuber played well and George was better this week, although tends to lose his player too easily.

Edwards had a strange game and I thought Milijas should have come on at half time.

We need to find more bite in midfield although, for me, Karl Henry was our best outfield player with Hennessey safe and assured.

So we are up against Villa with probably the strongest team in the EPL in the air and the game plan looked like high balls (free kicks,Hennessey punts, long throws) into the box and hope for the best. Give us a break Mick. Put the ball on the ground, give Henry a chance to run the game and we’ll beat teams like Villa at home.

Boring? Poor game? I think you must ahve been watching a different game. I thought the first half was excellent and we played very well – definately had the upper hand & should have had a penalty. In the second half they had obviously had an ear pounding at half time & woke their ideas up but apart from a few moments of worry we coped OK with a largely international front 4 in a top 6 team to get a well deserved point. Not many will come back from a goal down against Villa. If you’d told me we’have 2 draws from Everton away & Villa at home I’d have been happy.

A few observations: Zubar looks a good player. With Foley and Stearman both being able to play solidly at right back we’re blessed with an abundance of riches in that position. Compare that to left back, where although he didn’t have a shocker and as hard as he tries, Elokobi is not, as yet, quite up to this level. If we could move for Shorey who can’t get a look in at Villa on loan in Jan it’d be a massive upgrade for me. Well done to the centre backs today, Berra keeps improving and it’s easy to forget that Jody Craddock, as the song goes, “used to be s***e”!

In midfield, Kightly’s quick feet won us the pen, and although he doesn’t look right back to the player he was yet, it’s coming. Anyone that still doesn’t rate Karl Henry shouldn’t be allowed to watch football for their own good. Absolutely outstanding again. Dave Edwards didn’t contribute enough for me, and I’d perhaps give Milijas a start on the left hand side next week. The two lads up front did reasonably well, not Doyle’s best game for us by a long way but he’s a class player. Sylvan getting on the scoresheet is massive, he badly needed that. There are plenty more to come.

Again, we’ve shown we can compete with good sides. Again, we haven’t taken the three points that would be massive. Encouraging performances the past two weeks, but we have to start winning…

Further to my last post I quote from the BBC web site report on the game:

“Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s late penalty earned Wolves a deserved point”

“McCarthy may feel Wolves should have come away with three points after creating the best opportunities in a first-half spell of supremacy”

“Villa’s pace, as ever, made them a dangerous proposition on the break but it was Wolves who fashioned the more presentable opportunities in a first 45 minutes played in appalling conditions”

“Wolves showed a pleasing determination to play a passing game,”

    “Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill:
“It probably is a fair result. Wolves were the better team in the first half.”

The BBC isn’t known for being Pro Wolves this season (note appalling MoTD highlights so far this sesason) so what is it about the quoptes above that indicates “boring” or “poor game”?

I agree with Tim Wolf, we need to shoot earlier and the strikers need to create their own chances. All too often there is one pass too many. SEB, Doyler and Keogh have all been guilty of failing to take on a defender and create their own luck in matches this season. They would sooner pass it out wide than just have a go. We need to show more killer instinct in that final 3rd.

    Boring game?
I live in New York and got to the pub at 7.30 in the mornin to watch it- maybe the Stella went to my head but I thought in the main part, despite a few patches of dull, it was a great game- attacking ‘intent’ and plenty of tackles flying in as you like to see from a derby. I had my doubts about Henry at this level but today his was an unsung hero again with numerous crucial tackles in the middle. I thought Blakey looked half a yard of pace and lacking confidence so lets hope the goal has done him good. We have more than dealt with them. We have given a top 6 team a proper go of it twice in a week. I can only keep taking positives and do not believe for a minute we will go down this season. They are getting stronger, and soon enough a ref will call a decision our way (no one could deny the Kites penalty) and with a touch of luck here and there the wins will come.

We didn’t allow Villa to get going, and contained the threat of their ‘stars’ very well. Young, Carew, Milner, & Agbonlahor were supposed to tear us apart…and they didn’t.
Craddock, Zubar & Henry all had very commanding performances. Agbonlahor’s goal was very clever, & whether or not he mean’t his first touch it wrong footed Craddock perfectly to set up his goal. It would have turned any defender so no complaints on our defense. But apart from that Villa didn’t create much at all.

But neither did we. Villa have a very solid defense & read the game very well. We never really ran at them or around them, & just tried to pass through them like they weren’t there… which was never going to work. Milijas was just what we needed…a little more accuracy & creativity, and his backheel proved to be that final defense splitting ball that set up Kightly for the penalty. I’d like to see Milijas start in place of Edwards, who was the only player this week I was a bit disappointed in.

All in all, it was a very satisfying point we can build on.

In truth, a dreadful game to watch. Wolves can take a lot of credit for preventing Villa playing their game- much improved in the back especially on set plays. Zubar,Craddock and Berra impressed. Still not convinced that Elokobai is the answer in the left back position.
However, the lack of creativity going forward is a real concern as the service to the two strikers was almost non-existant. If we had got the penalty for the foul on Doyle it might have been a different match. Is it me or are we getting screwed every week on penalty calls?
Hopefully, Milijas will get his chance to play with Castillo in the midfield- we spent the money on him why not give him his chance?

Becausen of not taking points in previous games that we maybe should have we expected a win more, but when i saw the fixtures list at the start of the season i would have been more than happy from a point with Everton and Villa. I had no idea, that Villa would be coming up against a back four of Sumo Wrestlers, Kent Walton would have been proud of em, they were better Wrestlers than Jackie Pallo & Mick McManus. Without being too physical, your defence got away with at least 1 Penalty 4 bookings and one sending off, I have never seen so much holding a tugging in on match.
Still you got away with it and I have to admit, you were worthy of your point, that said, not only did you come up against Villa on an off day, your penalty could have gone either way, Sidwell did get the ball and it could just have easily gone against you.

We got out of jail in this game, yes we deserved a point and played well in the first half but we need punish teams when we are on top, saying that this Villa defence is one of the best in the league. However did our lads test Brad Friedel enough? Personally I don’t think we did, and when Villa took the lead I thought that was that but we finally got a penalty one of two only given in this match. Sylvan blasted it home which will do him a load of good for his confidence, really I should be delighted with this point but as the game went on our Birmingham neighbours looked there for the taking even in the second half it was us dropping off the pace and not Villa stepping up a gear. The guy sitting next to me in Bully stand said we played better in the rain than in the sunshine, bring back the rain he said.

Still 2 points from two teams who should be around the top six come the end of the season is very good, a point from Stoke or after the belief the players can take from this game we should be looking too win at the Britannia Stadium. After Arsenal and Chelsea we have Birmingham and Bolton at home back to back we must I think take 6 points from those 2 games.

The game was very compressed – the Molineux pitch size has a bearing on that – so we need someone who can “pick the lock”. The time has come to stand down Elokobi for the time being. Unfortunately George was again drawn out of position for the Villa goal. He is the weak link in the defence at the moment.

I thought we did really well against theVilla. Before the match fans were saying we aint going to get anything from this game and some fans said that about Everton. Stop being nervous we doing all-right we are getting there. I agree about playing the ball on the floor I dont like to see it being booted up the pitch either and we have got to start taking some chances from outside the box. UP THE WOLVES

Just cannot believe the criticism here.
Those who said it was boring, just could not have been at the game.
First half we were the far superior team.
Overall I thought we shaded it and deserved to win.
Defence did well, Henry was excellent and we have really found a player in Castillo – he is rock solid, I think our best player.
On a negative note……why are there away fans in the Steve Bull upper????
West Ham fans were there on opening day and a section of Villa fans there this weekend. The club needs to sort this out immediately.
But I gave them a real piece of my mind when SEB got the equalizer……….’ave it!!!!

Yes, I admit I was wrong, and we battled hard. Must have been the insomniacs cure for the neutral. So, as much as I was wrong, the other results have dictated we are one place of relegation, and the lack of quality on the whole means we cannot turn draws into 3 pointers. This will cost us dear at the end of the season. YOU NEED TO WIN YOUR HOME GAMES !! I’m glad SEB scored, and I hope it does wonders for his confidence, I think he is just not up to it at this level.Likewise, Edwards, Kightly and Henry. Poor game, good point…. but we will be in the bottom 3 after next Saturday.

Has anyone ever kicked the ball harder than SEB’s penalty. It was such a powerful kick. The keeper would have ended up in the net if he’d have got near it. Villa were holding on at the end.

9 points from 10 games doesn’t exactly strike me as avoiding relegation material. West Ham have a game in hand and then we will be in the bottom 3.
I am amazed at the amount of people who think were doing ok because we scrape a point here and there. Kick McCarthy out before its to late.

Thought we played well in most areas but once around the edge of the area some guys have got to start growing a pair and having a shot. I have been disappointed with the standard of reffing but also with the lack of starts/appearances for Milijas. He seems the only one with a decent chance of putting decent free kicks in. Kightlys efforts were woeful along with his corners. Elokobi is still a massive worry and we are going to get destroyed in games with his lack of awareness as to where is man is. In the Everton game he was totally unware as to where the guy was and then threw up his hand like a petulant teenager after the goal went in. Sorry George but you are not good enough at this level. Think Doyle and SEB will click they both work hard. All in all robbed again but until football moves into the 21st century and introduces the video ref then blatant peanalties will be missed, dubious goals given or not and cheating diving actors will get away with their fahsion of foreign style play.

Good point but we are still in the relegation battle and will be all season. If we can get above the likes of Birmingham and Burnley then we will be in a much better position with Hull and Portsmouth both still struggling.

We need a win at Stoke now to show we belong at this level as they are a poor battling team.

An excellent performance I thought, we looked great in the first half, but may be ran out of steam a little in the second.

Problem at the moment is that Castillo & Henry give us a fantastic base to compete with teams, however they dont give us the cutting edge to make that possesion count. Henry was out of this world, and Castillo steady, but until we can start opening teams up we may struggle to put them away – fitting Milijas in to the side is a big issue.

Still, a fantastic effort from the boys.

Good results over the last two games. Shame the Blues and Bolton won, but most useful result was Burnley losing. We should finish above them Pompey and Hull, but we need to start picking up wins.

We are playing good football, competing, battling when we have to but too often we lack ideas in the final third. Two good results but we are back down to 17th, with Stoke, Arsenal and Chelsea to come.

JIWAL – well done. Henry was outstanding and with him and Castillo in midfield we were virtually playing 4-2-4 first half. Edwards is not a left winger but gives the team energy. SEB might not do too much but score winning goals in games this season but him and Doyle ran themselves into the ground defending from the front. A point at home to Villa is a point gained in my book, as will be a point away at Stoke. Let’s not start calling games ‘must win’ with 28 left to go. OK we might go into bottom 3 soon, but Burnley will drop once they get a few injuries and suspensions as they have no squad depth. Keep the Faith

I enjoyed it immensely. Not sure what many fans expect when we play top six teams. We have to ‘spoil’ the game and not let them play. Wolves got it spot on and Villa looked ordinary after beating Chelsea last week when they looked awesome. We are weak up front but hopefully SEB will get fitter and I quite fancy Doyle and Chris together as Chris wins lots in the air and holds the ball up well. Bring on Stoke, we can win this one.

I Carnt believe all the moaners coming on here saying ‘dire’ and ‘boring’.What do you expect??? All these premiership teams have YEARS of premier league team building and hundreds of millions of pounds over the years on us.What do you expect it to be like? The aim is to not get beat, pick up points and just stay in this league no matter what.If we can do that this season then maybe we can look to improve each season after. I Thought it was an excellent battling performance. For the second match running our defence has seen off a top premier league striker in Saha and Carrew and Martin Oneil had to change his formation at half time cuz his midfield couldnt cope! Gabby was lucky with his goal. I Hate to say it but Karl Henry was excellent-best game ive seen him have for Wolves and obviously Castillo is helping him in midfield-he too was excellent.Zuber,Berra and Cradock were brilliant.Big George im not sure about,he gave the ball away a lot and his throws were awful. Someone on here said Kightly was ‘lightweight’-WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT???-Kightly was brilliant and was a threat all afternoon and he’ll get better every week.SEB still doesnt look 100% fit and i thought him and Doyle were guilty of NOT shooting enough-in fact i carnt remember anyone having a shot??? Doyle i like but he seems to come too deep which leaves us short up front when we break.Edwards had a poor game i thought and should of come off sooner. It was a good point against a very good Villa team, unfortunately after the rest of the results over the weekend it doesnt look as good now.Stoke next week we must get something out of.I’d play The Hoff with either Doyle of SEB as its going to be a battle.

The only place where I’ve seen any doubts about the Kites penalty shout is here. The radio, MOTD, the newspapers – even Martin O’Neill for god’s sake – noone questioned it. So, although we’ve nothing much to complain about – the Doyle shout being balanced by one for Agbonlahor – we weren’t done any favours, either. A draw was a fair result.

Castillo and Henry sharing the defensive midfield role looks really solid, and I think Milijas and Kightly will eventually be a strong creative partnership.

The only position where we’re not looking OK is Left Back – but you’d still want Big George in a battle, and let’s face it, that’s what it’s going to be next week…

2 points from none predicted so not too bad but we do need to start getting the odd win,..as we seem to be falling into the “just do enough not to loose” mentality. Sorry to say ive watched their goal several times and big George did not once look to his left in all the build up, and as with the Everton goal didnt know the player was there til it was too late! come on MM you are slowly changing things and it is working, but changing the left back has to be top priority.
