Villa travel to Molineux to face Wolves this lunchtime and then head to Sunderland in the Carling Cup on Tuesday before Premier League games at Everton on Saturday and West Ham the following Wednesday.

And O’Neill believes Villa will know what direction their season is heading in by the time they return to Villa Park to host Bolton a fortnight today.

“We have now, including the cup game with Sunderland, got four away matches and that is a very tall order, said O’Neill.

“We now have the fixture with West Ham too and there’s nothing we can do about it. By the time we come back to play Bolton we will have far better idea of how things are going.”

But O’Neill has warned the rest of the Premier League there is still more to come from Villa, who have already beaten Liverpool and Chelsea this season, with the claret and blue boss insisting his team need to develop a more ruthless streak.

“I think we could convert a few more chances in games,” said O’Neill. “We create chances and if we could put a better percentage away it gives you a better chance to win.

“We missed a chance to go 3-1 up against Chelsea last week.

“John (Carew) sent chance wide and in those games those sorts of chances can be really important.”
