Baggies searching for next manager

Roberto Di Matteo
Albion are already looking at potential successors to Roberto Di Matteo, sporting director Dan Ashworth has revealed.
Ashworth says the Baggies are constantly monitoring potential managers of the future after revealing they kept tabs on Di Matteo throughout last season while he was boss of League One side MK Dons.
Di Matteo was eventually chosen as successor to Tony Mowbray this summer and Ashworth has admitted the Italian was tracked throughout last season as part of an ongoing ‘watching brief’ of promising managers. “It’s a process that we monitor constantly because you’d be daft not to,” said Ashworth.
“When I first took on this role the chairman made it clear one of my roles would be to help find the next head coach, whether it be because Tony moved on, results were poor, or whatever.
“The average ‘lifespan’ of a manager or head coach is 13 months, which is frightening, so if you’re not prepared for the possibility of change you’re not really taking your responsibility seriously.
“So all through last season I identified and tracked some potential candidates and did reports on them, similarly to the way in which we do player reports.
“We looked at how their teams set up, their results, whether their style of play was conducive to the players we’ve got and the way our supporters expect us to play.
“Once we knew Tony was going we were well ahead of the game. We had a list that we had been tracking for many months and Roberto was among those names.”
Ashworth believes long-term planning is also key to the Baggies’ player recruitment plans, and the director has pointed to Chile international Gonzalo Jara as a prime example.
“After we won the Championship 18 months ago, that summer we didn’t really have enough player research,” he said.
“But that June Tony Spearing, our head of European scouting, had seen Gonzalo Jara at the Toulan tournament, playing for Chile under-23s.
“We tracked him for a year and had three or four different people watch him. We needed a player that could play in a number of different positions.”

The headline is not the most sensitive, but after today’s huge let down following Tuesday’s huge let down, I have to wonder now whether the club made the right choice in the first place. After a good start, Di Matteo and his coaching staff seem to have no idea how to arrest our alarming slide over the past few games. The concern I have is that he is currently too inexperienced at this level and is being found out by more astute managers. I hope I am proven wrong and I want to back the man while he is in the job, but like all Baggies I am deeply concerned and disappointed on this very depressing October evening.
Crystal Palace was a blip which could be overlooked but since then there has been Barnsley, Preston, Swansea and now Coventry – 1 goal scored in all 5 games.
Get your finger out Di Matteo, start getting more from the squad which you inherited. Current form is totally unaccpetable.

YES!
I too am pretty fed up with the current situation.
My main worry is that we are slippiong into the ways of the Albion of old where players did not work for the club and there was no consistancy.
HOLD ON!
RDM was a late appointment and needs time to get to know his players and the best position for them to play.
He has been trying things out and seems to have a more settled team selection now. He has had to contend with key injuries/suspensions – Moore. Brunt.Thomas.Bednar.
A key senior Pro. with experience and a calming influence has left _ Greening.
The positives for me are that we are not conceding as many goals as we did and the defence is playing better.
Negatives?
I am not convinced that Dorrans is the man we need in the middle of the park. For me he does not work hard enough when he loses the ball. Like most of us, we love to move forward with the ball and try to score but he neglects his defensive responsibilities, The swansea game was an example. He seems to be playing very much for himself and needs to look for other players in attacking positions rather than always going for the strike himself. He is a skillful player with great potential as was a certain Jason Koumas. Lets hope he matures soon and becomes the great player he could be.
My other concern is right back and Zuiverloon.Too many players get past him and I would lay the blame for Beatties goal at his door rather than Jaras.
Overall, we are in a very good position and at the point where i would expect the team to start performing and pushing on. If this does not happen in the next 4 to 5 games, then the alarm bells really will be ringing!
What do others think?

Just to follow my post no 1, which was made at the heat of the moment following another very disappointing result, I want to aplogise for criticisng the coach.
Firstly, negativity will not help the team and I regret contributing to that.
Secondly, RDM needs time and we need to be fair to him, especially as we have been unfortunate to suffer so many injuries to key players. Lets see where we are in May, not October.
Thirdly, we are still third.
So apologies to call if my emotional post has harmed the cause in any way….

1. and 5.
Fully understand your frustration but things will change.
As you rightly say, May not October!
Keep the faith.
