Albion 0 Coventry 0

Saturday 24th October 2009, 5:30PM BST.

COV V WBA 7 EB 24Albion had to settle for a point from a poor match at the Ricoh Arena.

The Baggies had the better of the few chances created but both side struggled for any cutting edge.

Substitute Chris Wood had the best chance in the dying moments, but was denied by Coventry’s substitute goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos.

The other main talking point was a booking for diving handed out to Albion’s Jerome Thomas in the closing stages of the first half, despite Sky Blues defender Martin Cranie appearing to catch him.

Both teams struggled for a cutting edge in an evenly-matched but disappointing first half.

It was Albion who threatened first when Coventry gifted possession to Luke Moore, who swapped passes with Joe Mattock but fired too close to Keiren Westwood in the home goal.

Westwood had to limp off on 10 minutes and replacement keeper Konstantopoulos was in the action straight away, blocking a shot from Thomas.

Moore was then denied by Konstantopoulos, before former Wolves striker Freddy Eastwood headed well wide from a Clinton Morrison cross.

Thomas then raced down the left and saw his shot from a tight angle blocked at the near post by Konstantopoulos. From the resulting corner, Jonas Olsson glanced a header wide.

The substitute goalkeeper did well again to hold a fierce drive from Dorrans, but was lucky to see a fumble moments later go wide of goal.

Thomas was incensed in stoppage time when he was booked for an alleged dive in the box, after appearing to be caught by a tackle from Cranie.

There was a scare for the Baggies just before the hour mark, when Olsson and Abdoulaye Meite failed to deal with a high ball but Gianni Zuiverloon made a crucial intervention.

An Albion break through Gonzalo Jara then failed to lead to a scoring chance.

Later a shot from substitute Filipe Teixeira took a deflection off Ben Turner, but the sliding Moore could not connect.

In the dying moments a neat through-ball from Dorrans found substitute Chris Wood, but his low shot was saved by Konstantopoulos.

These are depressing/worrying times for Albion fans. The team let us down badly on Tuesday and failed to do what was required today to make up for it. After a good start, we are being found out and our inexperienced coach seems to be out of his depth against more astute managers. It hurts but we have been let down by Mowbray (last season) and Di Matteo currently does not look up to it this season.

We had blips in previous promoton seasons of course, but we always bounced back. We are now in a run where we have got 5 points from 18. Di Matteo needs to turn it around quickly or the board will need to act with the same urgency as the board at Middlesbrough and bring in a more experienced manager who can get the best out of this squad – and Peace will have to put the needs of the club before his own ego to get somebody of the right calibre. Our club must not be allowed to drift back to Championship mediocrity of a decade ago.

Another very poor game,RDM’s inexperience now showing,he and Newton tactically weak, no ideas other than route 1, Carson kicked the ball long more times today than all last season with little or no effect. Boring Boring Albion.

Number 1 Hurt Baggie, I suspect you’re a Dingle or a two year old because your comments are utter non-sense. So we’re on a bad run, it happens to every club at some stage during a nine month season.

Because of our excellent start and the 5-0 win at Middlesboro, I think people have got a little carried away. We’re still 3rd in the table with almost a third of the season gone and we’ve done this with a new manager, some new players and a few injuries.

There is absolutely no need at all to press the panic button. I sincerely hope that whatever it is you do Hurt Baggie, you have limited to zero responsibility because the way you’ve over reacted here would make anyone working for you nervous.

I have absolute faith and trust in Peace, Robbie and the team as a whole.

If i have one issue and it is one issue, i feel we’re a little light in the striker department especially with Miller and Bednar being injured and Moore reverting back to his old, bad habits. Otherwise, i feel we have one of the best defences and the best midfield in the Championship.

I think RDM has now had a fair go in charge so judgement can now be passed. We have changed from a slick moving outfit to kick and hope. Playing one up front against teams thay will be happy finishing mid table is laughable. Then when we do have a slender lead with 20mins to go he tries to defend it. I’m sorry but I think playing Koren out of position has stiffled his game and all round the confidence is draining away. We desperatly need back to back wins to get us going again but playing one up front is not the solution. If we were playing like this in the prem we would be thrashed every week. JP sort out the mess your frugality has got us into or we won’t make the play offs.

There`s no point in blaming the manager cause
even if Albion had Alex Furguson in charge
we would still struggle due to our inept strikers.
If people want someone to blame then Jeremy Peace
is youre man,the bloke is a total idiot who
lacks ambition and any sort of passion for our
club, many fans think he`s a good buisness man
but waisting 5M on Mattock and Cox tells me he
isnt.Albion fans are so loyal and deserve much
better and shouldnt be getting treated like a
    bunch of mugs.
If Jeremy Peace doesnt sign a striker soon on
loan I can see us slipping into mid table,
theres to many good teams in league who all have
    decent strikers,Newcastle,Cardiff,Boro,Sheff Utd,
    QPR,Forest,etc.
To be honest I cant really see us getting promotion this season,we may do it the next when
Albion have a fully fit Roman Bednar,Ishmael Miller and James Morrison.

Albion only missing relegatin by a few points last term i would have thoght JP would have made sure that albion would be in a good position to a return but with each passing game
its looking less likley this will happen
If we dont go back straight up the likes of Morrison, koren, miller will all want to leave

Please feel free to re-read my previous comments and I think you’ll find they are spot on! You lot are deluded if you think we are going in the right direction. If only I was a Wolfie in disguise!!!! Notice that none of our other muppets who are obsessed with wolves and their pages have posted anything after their last two performances. It wasn’t an exciting game, true, but we dominated for long spells and played good football at times too. What was lacking was a ‘finisher’, not much else in my opinion. Wood was quite unlucky with his effort in the last few minutes as the goalie and a defender both dived in on his shot. I thought the trip on Thomas was a penalty but it was too far away to be sure so I’ve replayed the video frame by frame, and you know what, you still can’t tell! The tackle is obscured by another defender in the camera’s view of it. Nice stadium but why on earth do they put (allow) the Coventry loonies right next to the away fans on that corner? Not fair on the coppers or stewards who, overall, were very good and friendly.

RDM seems to ge getting some flak for recent results but it’s not his fault that the squad has been reduced in mumbers and the consequences are clear when we have key players injured. It’s also not his fault that the club brought in two unproven forwards from the lower leagues and chose to sell Beattie who whilst he was never going to be a first team regular was a capable deputy at this level. Give RDM time and point the finger of blame elsewhere.

WOW…. I see the “Peace Out” brigade have surfaced again…. now if you could all just have a whip round and buy him out we could move on !!!
He has already stated how he will run the club (prudently)- and he has also invited offers for the club – but until then he will do what he thinks best for the long term stability.

We all know that JP will only spend so much – he thought we had enough depth & options for promotion (and we may still have) however we still have funds available for the Jan transfer window.

What I don’t understand is the lack of a loan signing to replace Miller – we were always going to need a bit of experience to go with the young lads we have brought…. but who do we go for ?? (PLEASE dont say KP – he is not the player he was)

I’m bored of the Corpral Jones’ on here who panic as soon as we drop a point – but I also think we need to bring a loanee in.

In answer to all the ‘I’m a real Albion fan because I say I am’ on here today. Yes it was a poor performance, as a few have been recently against teams that have little ambition beyond a point.
Am I satisfied with these sort of performances? No of course not. Do I think the answer is to sack everyone? Yes that must be the answer to everything. Let’s sack the manager, and get in who exactly? Let’s sack the chairman, sorry I’m suffering RSI from trying to get through to numbskulls on that one. Bring in a striker? Dur, I bet the manager hasn’t thought of that one.

Sorry if I touched a nerve. My post was aimed at the numpty that posts on here pretending to be a Baggies fan, when he is obviously Wolves. Somehow he has moved from No 8 to No 15 in the meantime. His post mentioned that as one of the ‘usual suspects,’ I was missing (unfortunately I have a job which sometimes gets in the way of blogging) and that this was because the Wolves are doing well. If you are a regular on here you’ll know that I don’t have a go at the Wolves as a rule and my point was that it’s useless crowing this early in the season.

    NY Baggie (Number 5),
I am certainly not a Dingle, just a dissapointed Albion fan – but on reflection I accept that much of your criticism of me is fair and I apologise if my post has harmed the cause in any way.
I was very disappointed on Saturday evening and wrote the post in haste before I had had time to calm down and reflect more rationally.
Now I have had time to do that, I accept the following:
    1. This division is tough and there will be ups and downs – that is the nature of the game.
    2. Myself – and all Albion fans serve our beloved club better by remaining calm and positive when we have setbacks. Negativity is completely unhelpful, and those fans who had a go at Ollson on Saturday risk harming our cause too. But they, like me, reacted in the heat of the moment when feeling deep, deep disappointment.
    3. The coach needs to be given time. It is too early to judge him one way or another – just as it was on September 20 – and as you say we are still 3rd and there is much to play for….

So my apologies to all Albion fans. It was just heat of the monent disappointment. Lets move on and get behind the team on Saturday…

All wee need is a decent striker and I’m very surprised that we have not set the wheeels in motion to acquire one. RDM must have twigged that Luke Warm is’nt up to it…Chris Wood is a great prospect at 17 but he needs more time….Roman will bust a gut for the team, but we need a bit more than that and Ish Miller won’t be back until the New Year and we don’t know what effect his long lay off will have on his performance. One other area where we are poor this season is with the fullbacks who dont give us enough of an attacking option. I would ‘rest’ Mattock and play Cech who is versatile and when he does come forward offers more of a threat than Mattock ever will. And for all those that doubt the wisdom of Mr Peace, what price do you think we would get for Dorrans and Jara were we to sell them? I would suggest £3m per player is not unreasonable which shows a healthy return…eh ? Keep the faith all you doubters, there are another 30 games to play and as the great Corporal Jones used to say….Dont Panic !

Times change. Many years ago, if a player had two or three iffy games, the groans would go up every time he touched the ball, regardless of how well he played it. Some people need someone to hate and I suppose their cat at home is glad about it. These days we have the internet and everyone is an expert. I just love it when a self-confessed dole addict criticises JP for not spending his money the way this ‘expert’ tells him to. Or knows far more about football than Roberto will ever do.
It wasn’t THAT bad a game at Coventry and had we got even one goal, all would have been forgiven at least until Watford. I too would love to see Cox get a chance and certainly he might put himself about a bit more than Moore does. That kid seems to have lost everything he once had. Maybe a reminder of where his brother is playing might do the trick.Meantime, pray Roman and Chris are fit for Saturday. Jonas, nearly all of us think you are better than sliced bread. Spit flames when you’re angry, we care too. Kid Carson took one rocket shot and CAUGHT it at full stretch! That must have made the Coventry man feel like crying.

Some of you so called supporters have short memories. Yes last season we had flowing football but we also had the worst defence because TOMO hadn’t got a clue on how to defend.

Give RDM a chance he has tightened up the defence by at least 60%, now he has got that problem sorted he will concentrate on the attacking and finishing aspect, so that we start scoring again.

As far as Cox is concerned TOMO did exactly the same with Dorrans he never played him until he thought he was ready and now look at him. RDM is following the same rule he has got to let Cox settle into our style of football coming from the lower divisions. That is why they have training, it’s just like any job you have to be trained to become proficient, only when he is ready will RDM put him in to start a game, then I believe we will have another Dorrans in the making.

Meanwhile patience is a virtue I want to see the Baggies score goals as much as anyone else.
Booing and moaning at the players is being “childish” If we were third from bottom instead of third from top I could understand it, when we get all of the Squad fit again we will start to kick ass, until the be patient we be back in the “Prem” next season.
