Council boss on theft charge
Friday 23rd October 2009, 4:00PM BST.
The leader of Sandwell Council, Bill Thomas OBE, resigned today after being arrested and charged with theft.
The 69-year-old was arrested following an investigation by a police economic crime team. Councillor Thomas, a former headteacher, represents Rowley ward on the council which he has led since 2001.
The Labour veteran was due to stand down at the next election in April.
He will now appear before magistrates in Sutton Coldfield at 10am next Friday.
No information has been released as to the nature of the charges against him, although police have confirmed they are unrelated to his role as council leader.
He said today: “I am standing down as leader of Sandwell Council with immediate effect. I have instructed lawyers and I intend to fight to protect my reputation and integrity.
“I’ve been involved in politics for a long time and I am aware how distracting a protracted legal case would be.
“It is vital to me that nothing gets in the way of the good work being done every day by the hardworking staff of Sandwell Council, and as such I am stepping aside as leader.”
Zoe Lee, spokeswoman for West Midlands Police, said: “He was arrested yesterday as part of an ongoing investigation by the economic crime team of West Midlands Police.
“This charge is related to a personal matter and not connected to the defendant’s position at the Council.”
Sandwell councillors travelled back from meetings in other parts of the country last night for emergency talks.
Deputy leader Councillor Steve Eling will take charge temporarily.
Dr Allison Fraser, Sandwell Council’s chief executive, said: “The council has been notified that a 69-year-old man has been charged with theft.
“The council has not so far been approached by police about their investigation.
“We will co-operate fully if asked to help.”
