Halloween initiative launched for safety
Thursday 22nd October 2009, 11:30AM BST.
A special initiative has been launched in Cannock Chase to help young people stay safe and out of trouble this Halloween.
Cannock Chase Council is working with Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire County Council as part of a wider campaign called Take Care and Be Aware. Young people are encouraged to Be Aware Who You Scare and to follow simple Halloween tips.
Posters, leaflets and radio ads have been produced and the message is being taken directly into schools and youth centres.
Vulnerable residents, meanwhile, are being given No Trick or Treat cards to display in their windows.
The campaign aims to encourage young people to be respectful of other people in the community and not to be involved in anti-social behaviour.
Councillor John Jillings, Cannock Chase Council safe, strong and cohesive communities leader, said: “We want children to have fun at Halloween but we also want them to understand that some members of the community do not look forward to this time of year.
“Elderly residents and other vulnerable members of our community can be intimidated by unexpected knocks on the door or loud noises outside.
“Often, young people just think they’re having a bit of fun and they don’t realise that it can be upsetting for others.
“The campaign is encouraging them to think not only about their own safety but about other people’s as well.”
Inspector Pat Shannaghan, commander of Cannock neighbourhood policing unit, said: “With safety being our main concern, we would urge parents to ensure their children are properly supervised during both the Halloween and Bonfire night festivities.
“Some members of the community, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, choose not to participate in the celebrations and we’d ask local young people to respect this view.
“Police in Cannock and Rugeley are working together with both councils to keep your community safe.”
