Winning mentality key for Deeney
Tuesday 20th October 2009, 11:26AM BST.
Walsall striker Troy Deeney has urged the team to harness their new-found winning mentality.
The Saddlers stayed within two points of the League One play-off places thanks to Norwich’s last minute 2-1 defeat at Leeds last night.
After their 3-0 win over Exeter on Saturday, Deeney insists his club need to keep the same mindset ahead of their trip to Colchester at the weekend.
He said: “We need to start getting into the winning mentality. There are a lot of winners in the team and I just wish people could come into the dressing room after games to hear and see what goes on so they believe us.
“We’ve got to cut out the mistakes and we’ve got to get the points. It’s alright everyone saying ‘oh well, we’ll sort it out next week,’ but in the end the weeks are going to start running out.”
The striker ended a four-game goal drought in the win over Exeter to join Steve Jones on top of the Saddlers goalscoring charts with four.
Deeney insists he always backs himself to score.
He added: “When I shoot, I score goals. I’m confident I will always score, I just need the chances.”

The last sentence, ‘I just need the chances’ sums up our problems this season. Not enough creativity.

Much respect to Troy for this. The whole the weeks will run out” sentence shows a lot of maturity and I think he is rightly confident- the partnership with Byfield has been going from strength to strength. The only problem now is the midfield. Central midield particularly. I’d like to see O’Keefe over Bradley as Bradley’s development seems to have stalled but I hear O’Keefe gets nervous or he’d already be playing? Or is that made up?

A new creative midfielder and I think we could do the playoffs, 1st season in a long time we seem to have some real competition for places, upfront especially.
